they had to start their own, the black fraternities or the asian fraternities.e say that's still prevalent today. why is that even allowed to occur in this day and age? >> well it shouldn't happen. at the university of oklahoma i can name several fraternities where that's not the case where we have very diverse fraternities both racially diverse, and diverse in other ways. and sororities as well. one of our most prominent sororityies on the campus had an african american president two years ago. and so that's beginning to change. thankfully. but there's still some bad actors. there seems to be a culture in some of these fraternities and it has to be snuffed out. we're working with a group of students who are calling for change and who are bringing ideas to me on our campus. there are group of african american students called unheard. they're very constructive. they have very good ideas and we're going to make it better. we're simply determined to make it better. >> you took quick action in denouncing this and we thank you for joining us here on cnn. >> thanks fo

as to the fraternity one could argue that the fraternity was being punished not just because of the speechcause the fraternity may have acted in a racist way in excludeing for example black applicants and the like. it's an interesting question and the university seemed to stress just the speech but you can say the fraternity would be liable there. but the students the students are punished solely because of their expression of these awful ideas but indeed they are expression of racist views and that's something that the first amendment does not allow. >> what if the students are actually acting on their racist views, what if in fact there haven't been bids offered during the pledge process for african-americans interested in joining that fraternity? would that strengthen the hand of the university president in expelling them if that's what he chooses to do? >> well the university president actually stressed that it was the racist speech of the students that was the reason for the expulsion. that's not like there was fact finding that well there were particular students who let's say exclud

for as much terrible things have happened in fraternities and there are real problems in fraternity culture's not every single member. not everyone in a fraternity not even the vast majority are engaged in this sort of behavior. i'm hesitant to say we should end fraternities because of the behavior of what ends up being a minority. the question in fraternities should be -- it's fine to speculate, but i'm not sure it's ever going to happen. at a place like uva, fraternities have so many allies. it is not feasible. a better look or a better question is what can we do to change the culture of fraternities. there is a wide range of efforts that you can take that would make fraternities better places for the men that inhabit them and for the communities that interact with them. >> all right, nick. do you agree with him? is it too much -- >> it's hard in a free country to say you can't associate with who you want to. however what you see in some of those stats is some fraternities actually becoming a public health risk, right? >> right, right. >> which goes beyond issues of culture and associatio
