chapel hill is less than 20% fraternities and sororities. it is not numerically that large, but of course, they are influential care they have a real place there. i think that the scrutiny that has been coming to campuses, starting with sexual assault but also binge drinking, hazing -- this is extremely healthy for universities. we need that conversation. as someone that has been in higher ed for more than 30 years, and a woman in higher ed -- when i started in higher ed nobody would would go talk to anyone except the woman in the by department because women -- students suffering from sexual assault felt very little opportunity to talk and most of the people driving these issues would have been women. this is changing. we are seeing a lot more men and women talking about things. i am looking at the way the panhellenic council's are changing in our institutions. the fraternities were the first to put in a whole program of sexual assault training. i am not saying it is all perfect, but i am saying we need to continue to turn to the students th

it was mainly a way for elite white southern men to socialize but also to come together in a fraternal organization. usually their activities were limited military drills and social gatherings, but during the civil war many of these companies and their members were andally called into action went to fight as representatives of their hometowns. the columbus guard was started during the second creekmore in the 1830's and continue to be active until world war i. up until immediately after the civil war, they chose to wear a bright red jacket. as you can see, the red jacket actually has a right and ivory color scheme. the ivory portion on the front bya bib which is attached the many buttons you see moving around the side. these buttons are actually one-of-a-kind, there's no record of them being used by any other militia or military organization in the u.s. during the 19th century, and if you look closely at them, they depict an eagle with a c.g. stamped in the middle. obviously they were a unique creation for the columbus guards to use. this is the only known surviving example of a red jac
