(applause) >> thank you. i want to first thank the members of the supervisors for once again continuing the proud tradition and legacy of san francisco of being first. in my lifetime i've been doing this myself for 40 years, as a proud second generation organizer, influenced both by my father and my mother francis, who was a trail blazer in her own right. * frances. she what the first woman ever in california legislative history to break through the barriers that kept women in the stenography pool. she was hired to be an advocate for social justice up there. and she was a strong influence on my father opening doors for women and people of color beginning in the early 1940s when he hired a young frightened japanese american internee who came from the camps in idaho to cleveland, ohio. and a year later she learned how to stand up and fight for herself and for her community and fight and challenge first at leave land, then here in san francisco the illegal unjust discriminatory hiring practices. i was fortunate

. >> reporter: yeah, fred. a lot of people are wondering if this is the first day of spring or april fool's day because as you mentioned last year a lot of these cherry blossom trees were in bloom, but right now i'm surrounded by the trees, but where are the buds? it's going to give you a sense of the development of where they are right now. take a look at this tree right here, fred. it's young. looks like it miefk planted not too long ago. but look at the buds right there. look closely. they're barely peeking out, obviously. forecasters and rangers are saying that the weather is making them a little bit shy. i want to show you a little bit of a difference here for this tree much older. that probably again plays a factor, but these buds right here, fred, popping out a little bit more. hopefully in a few weeks we'll see a little bit more of that. park rangers tell us they expect peak bloom between april 3rd and april 6th. about 3,700 of these trees not just onned basin but in the area a gift from japan to the u.

fred and i are in this profession, the economist, 7200 years ago adopted dismal science. it is almost like nay saying, nothing good is going to come. the engineering evidence on the benefits of energy efficiency are massive. i have this book coming out, one thing i did with this other book, a lot of it, i read the study by the national academy of sciences called real prospects for energy efficiency. this is not an economist talking. this is the national academy of science coming together to have the best engineering research. and the benefits of efficiency in the national academy of science. on the other hand you have the . and engineering, the engineers don't know how economics will really work and the main argument from the orthodox economists and there is risk, there is hassle. and let these people in. they could be fever for. there is an article in one of the leading academic journals and economics which say there are no benefits for energy. and my response is if the engineering evidence is there. and to overcome what they are, and to build up the market. and that is

again, fred, there were no eyewitnesses. the account of what happened came initially from the mother but as you see from the calls there were several people that heard those gunshots and did call 911. emergency vehicles responded and between 100 and 125 officers were on the scene after the initial report. >> you just underscored there were no eyewitnesses that have been revealed to us or investigators but then what led investigators to these two young people as suspects? >> reporter: that's a great question. i asked the police department after the press conference yesterday. i said how can you be so sure? how can you be positive that these are the two right suspects? they said they arrested the suspects. the arrest came with the help of a physical description from the mother. they also cross referenced attendance records from area schools to find out who was missing that day. this is a very small town, only about 15,000 people. it is the type of town where in a community where everyone knows everyone, fred. this is really sh

>> well, fred, she's had a lot to say in these 18 days.re's been a five-daybreak because there was no court earlier this week and no court friday. folks absolutely obsessed with this trial will get their fix in a few minutes. they're just about ready to start proceedings. she right now is taking questions from the prosecution following the 200 plus questions that she answered last week from the jury. the prosecution's focus right now is limited to just what she told the jury. however, as this has been going on, the jury has been writing down more questions and putting them in the box -- actually the jury box. so the judge may allow a follow-up. bottom line, she could be on this stand for a couple more days depending on the leeway that this judge allows. >> incredible. so there's also a psychologist apparently that will be called to testify. is that psychologist likely to testify soon after jodi arias is off the stand? >> yeah. and there's a psychologist and a domestic violence expert. the defense says those are the two remaining witnesses

>> fred, the pain must be nearly unbearable for the family of this young couple. a premature baby boy born after his 21-year-old first-time parents were killed in a horrific hit-and-run two-car crash. pictures of damage to the car the couple was in, are stunning. the top of the livery car, a cab, is sheared off, it's not clear whether it happened during impact or when the young man and woman and cab driver were removed. the mother-to-be, raizy glauber and her husband, nathan, were sitting in the back seat. police say they were heading to the local hospital for a checkup. it's almost midnight. it's unclear why they were going at that late hour. the cab was t-boned, smacked an the driver's side by a oncoming car, a light-colored bmw, the husband and the mother-to-be were dead on arrival. but the doctors were able to deliver the baby boy by c-section. police say the infant is in critical condition. the cab driver survived. police say the two people in the bmw fled the scene on foot. the hasidic community in williamsburg, new york, is rallying around the family. tryin
