fred: absolutely. i got my start long time ago. 36 years in the house, i grew up in the reagan administration. i am a reagan republican. i learned reagan's principles way back when. he worked with the democratic congress and got things done. when he ran for reelection, he won 49 states. he was a standout for civility, for decency. we were going through some tough times back then. you always have huge issues of the day. i am still republican. i am involved in a number of different things. i am also -- we are trying to encourage a republican and a democrat to run as a team. if it's biden and trump, allow the voters to make a decision if they want a third choice based on the track record of the two that have been in office. host: many questions about your involvement with no labels. in the event of a biden trump match up, who are you voting for? fred: if that's what it is, i hope that no labels will get on all 50 state ballots. we are in play in two dozen states. we will have a convention in dallas april

fred can i. barbara oh, go ahead fred. well, i just think this is really interesting. i'm so glad you brought up the the interview. what's what's fascinating, me and i'm researching this for the second volume of the biography is that, you know, they were really prepared for this interview. that is to say the administration more or less knew what was coming from it with respect to the question and that the president would be asked. and he was always kennedy was, always somebody who did his homework. he made seem effortless, often. but that was in part as is so often case because he had practiced. so it's fascinating to me as points out, that in what he says about vietnam in that interview with a very large television audience, in a sense wanting to have it both ways, as mark points out, he wants to suggest, is their war, not ours. they have to win it, and yet it would be a mistake for us to withdraw and. you know, i think in a sense and mark and i think you talked about this. i think there's a certain paradox. and kennedy's vietnam policy going back from when he visited

>> reporter: fred, this is still a very active scene, it occurred yesterday in the 1:00 eastern hour. you can see there's police tape encircling this entire block. there's no one getting in to what is clearly a massive crime scene. you see all of these police vehicles, officers and investigators going in and out of that front door still collecting evidence trying to piece together what all happened and gathering here the next steps. i also attended earlier this morning sunday service at st. paul ame here. typically sunday service is a time of worship, people gathering together but today they had to confront the reality of what it is that occurred here in their community. and among the congregants here were actually student from the hbcu where the shooter originally ended up with and was turned around before coming here and conducting, carrying out this violence. i spoke with tracy davis, a state senator representing district 5 here in jacksonville. this is what she's saying about the community. >> angry, sad to realize we are in 2023 and as a black person we are still hunted because t

. >> reporter: yeah, fred. it's a south georgia county, heavily republican, trump carried the vote by 70% there. but prosecutors do have text messages that connect members of trump's legal team to the breach that happened in the election office where operatives hired by lawyers like sidney powell and rudy giuliani did gain access to voting systems in 2021. the text messages show you the process and the planning that went into this breach and how trump attorneys were helping coordinate efforts to get access to this voting system in this rural republican county. rudy giuliani is someone that his lawyers vehemently denied had any involvement, pointing the finger at sydney powell but these text messages do show that lawyers working for rudy giuliani were involved in that planning process. there's one that even mentions the mayor, which is something that we've seen operatives that have been working for the trump campaign refer to rudy giuliani as in other communications. so really connecting some of the dots here an

but fred, let me go back even further. in 1960, you recount an episode in the book in your first volume in 1956, when john f kennedy decided to go and the people around decided to go for the vice presidency and get him nominated. yeah. and as part of that effort, of course the democratic coalition at that point was extremely dependent on white southern segregationists, the solid south. he was asked during that attempt to get the vice presidency he would publicly affirm the rightness of the brown v board supreme court decision outlawing legal segregation in schools. and he wouldn't do it though it's quite true segregationists, as i think you all know, the key committees in congress, they were hugely important in the democratic party. and it was it was a brief it a very dramatic moment when this race for the vice presidency occurred, because adlai stevenson, as i think, you know, decided to throw the the nomination to the floor of the convention. and the kennedys were not really prepared for this. nobody was prepared for thi

fred? >> priscilla alvarez at the white house. thanks so much. separately tomorrow will be another pivotal day in court for former president donald trump and his co-defendants. they will hold a hearing to set a trial date. and former chief of staff mark meadows will argue his case in georgia should be transferred from state to federal court. jeremy, what do we expect these proceedings to be like tomorrow? >> reporter: yeah, fred, both of these hearings will be happening simultan simultaneously monday morning. let's start in washington, d.c. that is where a federal judge will be holding a hearing on when exactly the case, jack smith's case against trump for election subversion will take place. he expects a prosecution case will take about four to six weeks. the former president's lawyers proposed a trial date of april 2026. that is more than two years from now. they argue that four months is simply not enough time to prepare for this case and also that this trial date, it would interfere wit

our fred pleitgen joins us. i don't need to say this is shocking news.rigozhin had enormous power inside russia as head of the wagner military group. tell me what you're hearing about this and the significance. >> reporter: we are in the early stages but this could be huge news with prigozhin on that passenger list. we are hearing some from russian state media. i want to read you some of what russia media is quoting from the federal russian aviation administration, quote, an investigation has been launched into the crash of the embra aircraft which occurred tonight in a region north of moscow and south of st. petersburg. according to the list of passengers, among them is the sur name of yevgeny prigozhin. we are also hearing possibly ten people in total were on board that air crash, embra air 160, like that owned by prigozhin's company so possibly this could be very big news. the russians are treating this as very much as possibly yevgeny prigozhin being on that aircraft. we do know that prigozhin was traveling abroad, jim. we do know he was in africa at

think about it this way, fred. this area normally would get about five and a half inches of rain a year. we may see all of that amount of rain happening within the next couple of days or so. so that is why they're so concerned about flooding and the danger of the roads here. if you look down here, i'm told this is an area that does flood when there is a winter storm or if there's runoff from the snow in the mountains here so this is why they've shut this down so early because flooding could come all the way up to these barricades. despite that, we did just see people out here offroading out into the wilderness back there. that's exactly what the mayor of palm springs does not want people to do. take al listen. >> at this point we're asking residents to stay inside, stay where you are. we don't have any reason to evacuate at this time. we have closed down preemptively three of our roads that are regularly flooded. we do know there's going to be flooding. even an inch or two of rain in the desert can cause damage. >>

fred? >> and then what are we hearing from nypd?certainly caught offguard yesterday, and quickly able to boost up their numbers going from a level two to a level four response and then i want to hear you directly from one of chiefs of the department as he specifically addressed influencers, they know they have a lot of power. >> you know, we have to reach out to some of our influencers, and ask them to be responsible with this, to help us with this. i'm in the against young people coming here. if we knew about this, we could have had the barriers out here, police on-site and he could have did this orderly. >> reporter: and here we are, a day later, and that really is sort of the lesson that remains here, what police, in terms of looking back on the last 24 hours, and what was done, and what was not done, they're certainly taking a closer look at the situation and what could have been done, but for sure, they were actively monitoring the chatter online, and they were expecting this to be a group of young individuals coming together,

fred. >> thank you so much. so this new twist in the hunter biden investigation means his case could stretch on for months and could complicate his father's reelection bid. let's bring in priscilla alvarez at the white house. the white house didn't get a heads-up this move was about to happen. what has been the response? >> reporter: the white house did not receive any sort of heads-up when this announcement was coming from attorney general garland just yesterday. their strategy as of now is consistent, which is that they are not providing any comment. they are declining to comment on this matter. in fact, in a statement to cnn, ite spokesperson ian sam said, quote, we would refer you to doj or to hunter biden's personal representatives, when he was asked about this latest development. again, this has been consistent for the white house on various matters involving the justice department when we were heard from the president on any matters related to the justice department. he has maintained they work separately

fred: we have seen them come out with a host of measures all the time.e have just seen for example a cut in stamp duty, but it is still very incremental. remember the economy is suffering from major headwinds, particularly from property but also from exports. it does take a bit more to really get ourselves out of the rut here, probably more fiscal spending is needed. not just regulatory changes, measures to help investor confidence. that is always very helpful, but if you want to really address underlying demand you have to see a stabilization in the property market and we are not quite there yet. there are measures in place but we have to see how much traction it will really get an likely they will have to do a bit more in order to stabilize overall growth in expectations in china, it may take into fourth quarter before we really see those measures gain traction. we are almost at the end of the year before we see that stabilization in growth really come through. haidi: we are seeing for investors india it really stand out as a proxy to that em china pla

fred pleitgen is following all that from berlin right now. how is this playing out in moscow, fred? >> reporter: well, look, the state media is reporting about this in a very matter of fact way. what i've done so far is actually texted the spokespeople. both the kremlin and russia's foreign ministry as well. and it is quite telling to see what vladimir putin has been doing on this evening. he was at a ceremony in korsk in southern russia where he held a moment of silence but it had nothing to do with yevgeny prigozhin. it was a moment of silence for fallen soviet soldiers of world war ii. putin not saying anything yet about the crash, not saying anything about the investigation. we've also been in touch with some pro kremlin figures including a former adviser of vladimir putin who was quite close to the wagner private military company and yevgeny prigozhin. he is pushing that narrative saying that they believe that ukraine might have actually been behind all this, saying, look, it is ukrainian independence day. they point to some other assassinations even though the ukrainians have

jack, richard, fred richard photographs some of my own and i have mixed in my love of yellowstone. my i call it my backyard granddad would let me drive the pick up at the age of ten to yellowstone as long as i remember it. all the streams, all the mountains and all the rock formation. and if i missed one, then he lit up a big black cigar and it was a jaguar. and i had to sit between he and my grandmother when we went to yellowstone. so i learned quickly. i didn't know why. these are some of the people and where we've gotten the photographs that are in today's presentation. that encompass. 150 years. this is a photograph that the dad took of me and artist point and i had just gone into the marine corps and had come back on leave and it came to my mind. ned frost and fred richard and the family of five generations have been in yellowstone for 138 years. that's quite a bit of time. this is old faithful. it's one of my favorite photographs that i've taken. mammoth hot springs, the travertine terraces, the springs, and they change every year with all the earthquakes. it changes constant
