we have the "weekly standard"'s fred barnes with us. s the topic i guess of the week, fred, who will trump pick? a lot of speculation going into today surrounded indiana governor mike pence who will appear tomorrow. i guess he is the favorite now, right? >> well, i don't know, i wouldn't rule out newt gingrich. i don't think chris christie will get it but you can always put chris christie in the cabinet. i suspect trump would do that. mike pence brings something that newt gingrich doesn't or nobody else does, that is party unity. trump is sort of scoffed at party unity and saying i can win. i don't need all these people but he does and conservatives who are, a lot of them are very antsy about trump love mike pence. he is conservative across the board. he a pro-lifer. he is social conservative. he is economic conservative. foreign policy conservative. so he make as lost sense. he will be auditioning tomorrow when he appears with trump as i think christie was today. connell: you think trump, that is kind of interesting, at this late-stage

donald trump delivered the biggest speech of his life last night fred barnes from the weekly stanley hed it. he heard it. he was in the auditorium and he's with us now. do you think it worked, fred? >> i do think it works. i thought when i first heard it i've never heard anybody shout for an hour and 15 minutes. fred barnes is with me.our colleague, bill crystal's views about donald trump are pretty well known. where do you stand? >> i'm not never trump but i am never hillary. in my view, there's only one way in which hillary will not become president of the united states and that's if donald trump beat her in the national election. >> what has this convention done to help him? >> not as much as i'm sure as he'd hoped. flaps over his wife's imagine rich and i don't think ted cruz's speech helped him. trump has not been aggressive enough, proactive enough in seeking party unity. i've heard people propose things for him like showing up with his wife at the governor's mansion and asking if he could see john kasich, who certainly hasn't endorsed him either and hasn't come to this convention. it's not the time of thing trump does. >> let's start with the speech tonight. how important is this for people that have been marginally followers and maybe even have an opinion and tuning in to see how he does? >> i think it's mor

[laughter] and you know, you know what people remember, you know what had my wife remembered here that introduction by ivanka, his daughter when trump spoke last week at the republican convention, and she said when she was a little girl his advice to her was think big. and he does think big and that's one of the reasons people like him. they think he can do things that politicians in washington cannot, of course, trump says he's only one who can do this. but a lot of people believe him. >> classic case yesterday where donald trump gave a press conference that actually on this -- you can agree to watch it on this prime minister off the cuff. no prompghter no notes rapid fire answers to questions. but direct answers, i think every day people like that. elites picked up on implications, you know, the ordinary people loved it. the media just picked on anything does that constant dichotomy between elite and how people feel. how or or pa am i going wrong here?

fred barnes is with us now.what it was. 3:1 republicans, 3 times more republicans on trump's ticket. and the lack of washington experience. what do you think? >> other things, and newt gingrich. he is someone who is comfortable with, they have known each other 10 or 12 years, played golf together and so on. newt gingrich is a heavyweight, particularly in washington. he is also someone trump listens to. trump is not famous for taking advice. he listens to a lot of advice of gingrich and take some of it. ashley: isn't gingrich the academy of what people are voting against when picking trump, the political establishment, same old same old? would that hurt trump? >> they will settle for trump being the outsider. we do need somebody who knows the ropes in washington and no one knows them better than newt gingrich who was a house member for 20 years and house speaker for four years and someone who is a policy expert. he had all the things trump needs and he is someone trump is comfortable with. he makes a lot of sense

tom: joining me now, executive editor for the weekly standard and fox news contributor fred barns. interesting, fred. i just heard her talk about things donald trump said jobs is what we need. i didn't hear a solution from her. she just -- >> she had a better statement earlier in the day but, again, i don't really think jobs are the answer. jobs are not the answer number one. after you have these horrendous cases in minnesota and in louisiana and in particular the ambush of the police in dallas. what you first need is a restoration of law and order so people willful protected. and then you have president obama in europe sneaking in a mr. you go for gun control. and i think when you have people speak about gun control, you know what they want to do? go out and buy a gun. tom: by the way, today the stock market did well. we'll get to the numbers in a little while.
