joining me, the weekly standard executive editor, fred barnes. me, anita hill had the fbi investigate her and had a big part of what happened going forward, whether you believe anita hill and clarence thomas got confirmed as a supreme court justice, this is the supreme court of the united states. why would the fbi not do an investigation in this? >> well, what's the crime? you know, they don't -- this is not on their menu of things the fbi is supposed to do. they do sort of background investigations of nominees, kavanaugh being one of them, but you know, it's not what they do. the rules are set here by the committee, the judiciary committee. why in the world she has to negotiate coming and testifying, and there's only one possible reason and that is to take time to stretch it out, because that's been the strategy of democrats the whole time here, to stretch it out so they can't have a vote of confirmation for the nominee before the election, the midterm election on november 6th. that's the strategy and look, you can watch on tv and see the commit

liz: joining me now is the "weekly standard"'s fred barnes. great to see you, your reaction for the delay and the probe? >> well, i was certainly impressed by what mr. gavin said, it made all the sense in the world to me. meeting a deadline of one week is going to be very, very hard. what if the fbi finds a small matter they want to extend their investigation into. is chuck grassley going to say no? our committee has to vote? liz: what's your worry about this, fred? what's your concern about this? >> that this won't be the last time where there's a delay. we've seen them before, and certainly there are people working for the democrats, scouring the country, to find anybody and any reason for another delay. i think you have to worry about every delay if you're kavanaugh or a republican. liz: yeah, the president ordered the fbi reopen the background investigation it. should be pointed out that judge kavanaugh has been vetted and looked at multiple times. he's answered questions under oath. he's spent hours talking to people behind the scenes in

"weekly standard" executive editor fred barnes.cross as republicans are damned in they do, damned if they don't. trying to afford miss ford an opportunity to speak, but if her lawyers insist a fbi investigation conducted and finished first, they're between a rock and a hard place. what do they do? >> well they are. at some point they will have to take a tough vote. make a tough decision and live by it. otherwise they will get this delay tactic which is -- neil: would everyone go along with delayed vote? would a jeff flake a susan collins? would all of them go along? >> that is a big question. one, there is going to have to be a vote. and two, will republicans have enough of their own people to pass it? we don't know that, particularly with jeff flake. bob corker, senator from tennessee, sounds like he is on board to vote for kavanaugh. we don't know about flake of arizona or about collins. that is two. you really need to limit it to one losing vote. the -- neil: you could go to two. can't afford if you want the vice president role.
