so much as always let's go down to cnn's fred pleitgen. he is in tehran. of course the iranian capital and fred leaders in iran certainly are watching these ceasefire negotiations closely. what are you hearing there about? one, are they optimistic for an agreement and what they're looking for specifically here? >> well, why they're absolutely not optimistic is certainly something that we're gleaning from having spoken to iranian officials and other sources here on the ground as well. and i think one of the things that's been so interesting in the past couple of days as these negotiations were going on, is that despite the fact that of course iran is not part of the negotiations, they are still very much a big factor in the negotiations. they're not only watching closely what is happening in the negotiations, there actually being kept up up-to-date by those negotiations by the mediators. in fact, the qatari prime minister after each day of negotiations called the iranian foreign minister to brief the iranian foreign minister as to what exactly was going on.

cnn's fred pleitgen is in tehran. fred tell us what iran's leaders are watching for hi there, jim.f all, you're absolutely right. the iranians are really watching this very closely. in fact, i was in iran's parliament for the better part of the day today, and i spoke with several senior iranian parliamentarians and one of the things that we heard from them is they say they're actually rooting for the ceasefire negotiations. they say that they hope that a ceasefire can be established. however, the ron are saying that they don't believe that israel is serious in these negotiations. of course, we also, as you said, have heard from hamas tonight, as well. one of the interesting things that we're finding in the middle east right now with this threat of iranian retaliation, is that iran is actually also going through a power transformation right now, where a new government and a new president is trying to get his cabinet ministers confirmed by iranian parliament. we saw that process in play today, which obviously of course is also overshadowed by the security situation that we're current

cnn's fred pleitgen is monitoring the situation for us. fred, what's the latest either boris, you actually, as we were going to air, we got another update from the ukrainian emergency services and they say that the death toll is actually now at seven with 47 people wounded in these massive airstrikes as the ukrainian say, that really targeted areas throughout the entire country, including, as you mentioned, the capital of kyiv as well. >> and if we look at some of the missiles that were used, the ukrainians means are saying that 127 missiles were fired by the russians and 100 109 drones. some of those missiles are absolutely huge. there's some that are actually designed to destroy whole carrier strike groups. others are hypersonic missile. so certainly the ukrainian air defenses very busy in the overnight hours they say they actually managed to shoot about to well hundred of these missiles and drones down. but of course some of them did go get through doing massive damage to ukraine's critical infrastructure, especially the energy infrastru

cnn's senior international correspondent, fred pleitgen is joining us now with the latest developments and fred russia is scrambling to contain this attack. what are you hearing about? what's going on the ground yeah they definitely are scrambling to try and contain the attack. >> and so far it seems as though they're only marginally successful at actually doing that. it's been quite interesting throughout the course of the day. we are of course, in day eight now of this year ukrainian incursion into russian territory and the ukrainians still do appear to be advancing. that's certainly something that's remarkable given that there isn't actually that big. and of course the russian army for its part, is actually very big, but they simply don't seem to have enough forces in that area to hold the ukrainians up at about the halfway mark of this day the ukrainians came out and said that their forces had already advanced. another about a mile-and-a-half or maybe two miles into russian territory and that they'd already at that point in time, this was around midday, taken 100 russian as prisone

cnn's fred pleitgen joins us now, live from kyiv. fred, what more do we know about this request? from kyiv yeah, so the ukrainians really haven't talked very publicly about it, but i was able to speak to some sources here on the ground in kyiv, including a senior ukrainian official, boar's and one of the things that the ukrainians are saying is that they believe that they need to use some of these american supplied weapons like for instance, the atacms surface to surface missiles to try and strike deeper into russian territory than they have been able to in the past. >> of course, right now with a lot of these long distance weapons, including air launched missiles, but also surface to surface missiles. they're mostly allowed to attack places in ukraine that are occupied by russia, like for instance, crimea and some of the border areas in russian territory, but not very very deep into russian territory. and the ukrainians say that they're going to present the us with a list of targets they'd like to strike for several reasons. some of these places are, for instance, fuel depots. s

let's bring in cnn senior international correspondent fred pleitgen, who joins us from ukraine. so fred, why are ukrainian officials coming all the way to washington to make their case? >> because i think for them it right now that's really existential, not just in the eastern part of the front, in the areas where the russians are really pushing back the ukrainian military. but of course, also go for instance it's in the kursk region where the russian, whether ukrainians themselves are trying to advance. and i think one of the things that we saw from the ukrainians yesterday is they really want the u.s. to lift some of those restrictions because because they want to strike some of the weapons that the russians are using to hit the ukrainians from a longer distance. so they want to strike deeper into russian territory and it's really two things. on the one hand, it's a lot of those missile launch sites, for instance, for the s 300 missiles that don't really travel very far. but the big problem that the ukrainians efforts in the kharkiv region is that they only have about 30 second

evacuations now underway in the neighboring belgorod region cnn's senior international correspondent, fred pleitgen is following all this for us and fred evacuations now in two regions along the russian border there, this is all happening in the past seven days what's the latest along the russian border, but actually pretty deep into russian territory. >> jessica, you already mentioned those surround 600 square miles that the ukrainian say that they now control there. that's significant amount of territory and it inches also closer to actually some of russia's main military and logistics hubs that they're using for their war in ukraine, namely the city of kursk and also the city of belgorod as well ukrainians still pretty far away from there, but they do say that their forces are still on the move. the interesting thing about it is that the ukrainians are using a fairly small force. but when that's extremely mobile, and the russians right now don't seem to have the number of troops that they would need to try i had holed all of this subs are really difficult situation for them seems as though the r

let's get straight to cnn's fred pleitgen has been tracking all this. so fred, how extensive were these russian attacks? >> well, there were massive and in the end, the ukrainian say that seven people were killed and 47 where people are, people were injured across the country and all the span, pretty much all areas of ukraine, some 15 different places inside ukrae. if we look at the numbers, they are really big. the ukrainians are saying that the russians used about 127 missiles and more than 109 drones to attack ukrainian territory. and among them are some pretty tough missiles. one of them is one that's actually designed to take out whole aircraft carrier strike groups and other ukrainian say they were able to shoot a lot of these missiles down. but some of them obviously he did hit their targets. there's big power outages. alex in ukraine right now, they say there's going to be rolling power outages going on over the next couple of days. the russians, for their part, actually confirmed that they conducted these strikes and that they were going after e

let's bring in cnn senior international correspondent, fred pleitgen. ssue very, very well. fred is russia making any progress in slowing down? ukraine's military movements inside its borders? >> maybe a little bit wolf, but certainly not as much as the russians would like to. and you're absolutely right. the ukrainians today and this was only at the halfway mark of the day had said that they are already progressed further into russian territory, about a kilometer, maybe two kilometers further than they were the day before. now, the ukrainians have said that they continue to make that progress and it's certainly been very difficult for the russians to hold them up. one of the things that we've been doing over the course of the day is monitoring some of the things have been coming out of russia. and the russians keep showing videos of their planes the allegedly bombarding ukrainian positions and ukrainian troops inside that russian territory, that area of curse and yet you keep seeing the ukrainians advance at the same time, the ukrainians are indeed sayi

cnn's fred pleitgen is in berlin with the latest reporting. fred.velopment to see ukrainian soldiers inside russia. what can you tell us? >> yeah, absolutely extraordinary and certainly seems as though jim the ukrainians are trying to further advance into russian territory. the russians have said that they've managed to hold up some of those advances inside a huge ukrainian force that's doing it. but certainly very agile one and one that also has a lot of armored vehicles as well. and the numbers and these are numbers that russians have given us. they're pretty staggering. the russians themselves are admitting that the ukrainians have taken over some 28, at least towns and villages on the russian side of the border in the southwest of russia, an area called kursk in an area called belgorod as well. and we saw some of those evacuations on our screen just now the russians are saying that around 120 20,000 people on the russian side of the border have already had to leave their homes in 180,000 are now under evacuation orders. so certainly a pretty dif

fred pleitgen is live in teheran. fred, let me start with you. so take us through the role you expect iran to play. in the upcoming talks hi there, kim. >> well, first of all, we're now pretty interesting place here were inside the iranian parliament, inside the modulus. and right now what's going on here is actually the confirmation hearings for the new government of newly elected president masoud pezeshkian's, that's going to be very interesting to see how that shapes are wrong let's foreign policy in these very key times in the middle east. the other thing of course, so that is going on as well, is that you do have this term while that is still going on, i spoke to a couple of members so parliament here, but inside including some very prominent one. and they certainly say that they're not very confident about the ceasefire negotiations that are going on. they don't believe that israel is serious it's about the ceasefire negotiations and also they say they don't trust the united states to be an objective mediator in all this because they believ

. >> cnn's fred pleitgen is with us now from berlin, fred, what do we know? >> hi there victor, yet all this apparently happened at around 9:40 p.m. last night. that was a big festival going on in this fairly small town. it's called dissolving and it's right between the towns of cologne and dusseldorf with which is indeed in the west of germany at this town festival apparently shortly before 10:00 p.m. the attackers start started stabbing people in the crowd near the stage where the assessable was going on. the police had originally categorized all this as a rampage, but then later spoke of a terror attack and then sort of downgraded that. it's adjusting attack because they say that it appeared as though the attacker deliberately stab people into the neck area so they don't believe that this was someone who was just on some sort of rampage that they believe that this person was specifically looking to kill people. now, so far three people have been confirmed to have been killed, eight people wounded, some of them severely wounded. and it appears as though the

appreciate that want to turn now to our fred pleitgen live in tech runs. so fred, we were hearing cautious optimism from these rates phillies side and the american side about a deal no such optimism from hamas or iran is that right yeah, that's absolutely right. >> that's exactly how it would categorize it docked just a couple of minutes ago, i was inside iranian parliament we're right now the new cabinet newly elected president masoud pezeshkian is going through a confirmation process, which is a pretty tough process actually here in iran, and we were actually able to speak to a lot of members of parliament who are we're in that session and none of them really expressed optimism that a ceasefire deal is going to happen. there were some we were speaking to who say that they don't believe that specifically israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is serious about a ceasefire agreement. they believe that the israelis have consistently moved the goalpost on a possible agreement of course, a lot of them also don't trust the united states as a mediator at all.

we have cnn's nada bashir joining us live from london and our fred pleitgen is live in teheran. i'll start with you, fred, so what more can you tell us about the u.s. warning to iran? >> well so far sources that we're speaking to here inside iran and kim are essentially laughing all of that off, not just that warning or that alleged warning by the united states, but then also some of the statements that came from the foreign minister of israel yesterday when he was in a press conference together with the foreign ministers of the united kingdom and france that he essentially said that he expects france, the united kingdom, to attack iran if iran were to retaliate for the killing of ismail haniyeh, which of course happened here in tehran on july 31. the iranians are saying they're going to make their own decisions about how they move forward. but of course at the same time, they are keeping a very close eye on that process that's going on in doh on those attempts to get a ceasefire going and you can see in those talks that iran, while of course they're not at the table, they're not

cnn's frederik pleitgen is following this one for us is joining us now, what's the very latest fred? >> hi there, kate. well, it certainly it seems though the ukrainians are still making advances in that area, not just the kursk area, but also the belgorod area as well. it's been quite interesting because this throughout the course of the morning, what we've been doing is we've been taking a look at some of the social media posts that have come out for some of the russian military bloggers, but also from the russian ministry of defense as well where they claimed to be hitting those ukrainian positions where they claimed to be holding the ukrainians up. and where they claimed to be pushing the ukrainians back. but at the same time, we are also seeing that there are now a vacuum orders for an area that's even further to the east, that's not even on the border with ukraine. so certainly seems as though the ukrainians have made further progress into russian territory and at least in some cases, appear to be pushing the russian security forces and the military bag. it's quite interesting
