demonstrators demand answers in the death of freddie gray. he man mysteriously injured during his arrest. this morning, explosive new allegations about how gray may have become injured in police custody. we are live. welcome back to "early start." i'm christine romans in new york this morning. >> and i'm john berman live in baltimore. about 30 minutes past the hour. standing in front of city hall where there are national guard and maryland state troopers and baltimore police on watch in this park which is empty this morning, but was filled with demonstrators at dusk overnight. now the story here this morning is calm. the crowds disbursed quickly as the curfew set in at 10:00 p.m. as quiet as it was here last night, it was busy on streets across the country. thousands of protesters out calling for justice in the death of freddie gray. this all coming as we learn more new information about what may have caused gray's fatal spinal injury in police custody. it is an explosive new report in "the washington post." i want to bring in cnn's athena jon

they said we disagree with any implication that freddie gray severed his spinal cord. again, just because a prisoner inside the van says he believes gray was trying to injury himself doesn't explain what happened to gray before the van. this will be discussed no doubt. we are hearing from the baltimore police officers who are under investigation at this time. a family member of the officer involved in the arrest sat down with cnn's don lemon, she says to give his side of the story. >> what did he say happened? >> he believes that whatever happened to mr. gray happened before he was transported. >> according to your loved one, what took so long to get medical help? >> they don't know. they have not discussed that with us what took so long. we didn't ask what took so long. i think the officers that chased him and handcuffed him and had him on the ground and he said that he was hurting, i think they should know that he needed medical attention. shouldn't that be their call to make? >> is the department racist? >> that's a fair question. are there some bad apples? yes. >> a

washington post" says a leaked police document quotes the only man inside the police transport with freddie gray, a prisoner who was in the back of that transport with him. he says that gray was banging against the walls of the van and this prisoner in the black believes that gray was intentionally trying to injure himself. but it is important to note that the prisoner could only hear him, not see him. so how he came up with the notion that gray was trying to injure himself, very much speculative at this point. while that's going on, a relative of one of the officers involved in the arrest has talked to cnn. this relative says the officer believes that gray was injured before he was put into the place van. so some conflicting views of how or when freddie gray may have been injured. conflicting or maybe complimentary. we just don't know yet. that could be part of this police report that was due to be handed out tomorrow, but again could have been handed over already. we just don't know yet. we are waiting to hear from that baltimore police news conference. the commissioner slated to speak any mom

the freddie gray arrest and the freddie gray killing which led to this.was the proximate cause of this arrest in baltimore. the arrest happened on april 12th. if you know anything about this story, you know mr. gray was arrested for a reason that's still rather murky. he was taken into custody by baltimore police. you see that footage here. he's limp as they bring him into the back of a police van. by the time he ended up getting out of that police van -- by the time that police van arrived at its destination at the police station he was unconscious. this happened on april 12th. freddie gray then went into a coma and he died on april 19th. his family says that when he died his spinal cord was nearly severed and they believe that whatever killed him happened to him after he was taken into custody either before he was put into that van or once he was in that van. now what has happened this evening is that for the first time some information has surfaced about what maybe the police investigation into freddie gray's death. an affidavit part of an application

the family of freddie gray pleading for peace. the police commissioner warned outside agitators, outside demonstrators to not try to stir things up but if you look at the hometowns of the more than 30 people arrested on saturday into the early morning sunday most of them were from baltimore. what are you seeing where you are? >> that they were from baltimore and this is a very, very disturbing development. in this neighborhood where freddie gray was arrested a couple weeks ago. they were very much over it after saturday's event. thought it got too heated, to violent between protestors and police. and now this on the day of freddie gray's funeral and just a half mile from the church a very very powerful service for 25-year-old freddie gray, and now this. the city is is going to have a tough time putting this back in the box. this is how they are reacting on this particular day, because they did not expect it. i think that the police at western district which is in the epicenter of the protest here most angry, but mostly people prot

freddie gray was placed back into the transport wagon. rud hill and dalton to teal with mr. gray and the facts of that interaction are under investigation. the next stop for the transport wagon involved a call for assistance. bpd officers were handling an arrest scenario that required additional police officers to respond. the wagon operator decided to respond to that location at north avenue and pennsylvania. at north avenue and pennsylvania avenue a second prisoner was introduced into the transport wagon. the transport wagon then proceeded to the western district. at the western district freddie gray an ambulance was called rather for freddie gray. mr. gray was placed in an ambulance and he was transported to shock trauma where he died a week later. our investigative team is dedicating every resource at our disposing to each and every one of these sites. it's come flex. it involves a minutia of details. it requires our full talents, our full time. and we're going to get this right. but in order to get it right, we've got to fully investi

freddie gray. in a stunning revelation police say now during their investigation they learned about about unreported stop by the van carrying gray. and cnn affiliate wjla-tv citing malt poor law enforcement sources briefed on the police findings as saying the investigation shows gray apparently broke his neck inside the police van, and a head injury matches a bullolt in the back of the van. these disclosures raising new questions about what really happened after the arrest? the prosecutor says her office will conduct its own probe, won't rely solely on what the police report says. baltimore's mayor says justice will be done. our correspondents analysts and guests are standing by with all the late-breaking developments. begin, though, in baltimore. ryan todd ryan ryan todd joins us with the latest. brian todd? and what happened to freddie gray. and what they want to see is justice for what happened to freddie gray. still, so many unanswered questions. there had been a big expectation among some people and i talked to one of the pastors who was in schools today, trying to tamp down young people's expectations for what's going to happen on friday. because a lot of the young people he was talking to were saying to him they were thinking charges might be brought on friday or at least some kind of resolution or answer would be given from authorities about what happened to freddie gray. the message, the pastor was getting out, the message the gray family attorney was trying to get out to a crowd here last night when we were on the air is that we're -- the public is not going to learn friday probably not going to learn anymore details about what happened to freddie gray and to try to tamp down expectations. so there's not high expectations and a lot of disappointment. i want to bring in our legal analyst, sunny hostin, who has work

body. >> and of course they're saying that a bolt in the back of the van matched an injury on freddie gray's, you know you've heard this reporting. you've heard dr. dupree. of course another report is quoting a businessprisoner saying that gray was trying to intentionally hurt himself. do you have an open mind at all to the possibility that police are not guilty here e or do you think this is selective leaking trying to defend them? >> well, look. i would say that anything is possible. we should definitely lock at the evidence. but at this point you have to say give the police credit for creativity. listen. this is not a guy who looked like he was wanting to hurt himself. he was crying out for help. he was a guy who was hurting wanting help. not a guy trying to hurt himself. also let's just be rational here. if in fact this guy was committing some bizarre act of suicide, the very first thing police would have said my god, i've never seen anything like this we arrest this guy and he killed himself inside our a van. and the only statement we've got from the police at this point turns out itsel

search warrant affidavit reported by the washington post that becomes the headline you know that freddie grayinjured himself and you got to kind of walk that back. the second prisoner, donte allen, can't see mr. gray. said to us he didn't even know he was in there. i think what's important is to understand that what we have reported, put all the pieces together prior to mr. allen picked up there was a stop on the van because the van driver suspected, it appears suspected nothing was wrong and called for other officers to come and check the prisoner. at that point, according to police commanders those officers should have called for a medic. they didn't. they then go one way and double back to pick up mr. allen. what we have reported according to sources is that when officers opened that door, you can see them do and look in the van with the door wide open mr. gray was unresponsive. so what is it that donte allen is hearing on that part of the trip? according to medical experts, when you suffer this kind of injury, that severe neck and spinal injury which is slowly taking the breath out of you

resident telling me this is a city that was already on edge even before freddie gray's death. saying "freddie was banging against the walls." >> i can't see that happening. i can't see that happening. maybe turning he was rolling against the walls because they said he wasn't strapped down. i can't see him banging anything unless he was rolling, and his body -- you can look on the video, and you see his leg was broken. the boy wasn't even standing. he was literally limp. his entire body went limp. i appreciate the national guard trying to restore the city. what you got to understand is, say you take a bottle of pepsi, you put pop rocks in there, put the top on shake it. you keep shaking, keep shaking, what's going to happen to the bottle? it's going to explode. the city is outraged with the way things have been going. you're taking money from our schools, taking money from the communities. we have so many houses -- baltimore is a beautiful place. unfortunately, we can't live here the way we're supposed to because we're oppressed. then today in baltimore, they buried freddie gray. there had been calls for people not to protest on this day. mr. gray's funeral began in the late morning and they buried him at the shiloh baptist church. 2200 people capacity and it was filled and people stood outside. that church is near a school and a mall. and after school let out, after the funeral, this is what happened. local news say these clashes began when the schools let out and the kids flooded into the streets at once. whatever part of this might have been a peaceful protest, people set cars on fire they smashed a police cruiser, they hurled things at police who responded by appearing to hurl things out and in some cases with rubber bullets. among the 15 officers that were reportedly injured today, one was reported this afternoon to be nonresponsive, to be unconscious. but we're told that two officers remain in the hospital tonight. we do not have more information about their status other than they are hospitalized. the governor has declared a state of emergency and activ
