>> frederick douglass interest me in his relationship to lincoln which evolved tremendously beginning as quite a critic. becoming critical during what he considered the slowness of the administration to act against slavery. a president meeting with an african-american advisor to talk about slavery. douglas himself comes away more increasingly impressed with the authenticity and honesty and anti-slavery stance of the president. his reaction to the assassination -- i know he goes on to give a talk in rochester in which he says lincoln was the black man's president. we remember a later speech in which he says he was nothing but the white persons resident. -- white persons president. i'm reiterating some of the points which is there's a great distance between 1865 and 1876 and a different path for a man like douglas in the first year than the last. david: there are a lot of people who really change their opinions of lincoln but when he meets lincoln, he feels them utter lack personally as does -- as does sojourner truth and meets lincoln in the white house. douglas and many other people g

frederick douglas does interesting things -- frederick douglass does interesting things in that set genre. he talks about a woman who taught him how to read. he is not lucky. slavery does not make you lucky. but he does end up in baltimore, which makes him an urban slave. at he had the ability to start to make money on his own. these are things we will read about. he starts to make money on his own. but what he gets is this ability to read text and the mistress, the one who teaches -- and she gets in trouble by her husband for teaching him how to read -- but she teaches him how to read the bible and other texts. she allows for him to learn how to read. this is his skill. douglas will tell you -- i would say it it --douglass will tell you, i would say it is ingenious. there are these white schoolboys and they have these grammars. he becomes friends and gets him to give him a grammar, so he starts teaching himself to read as well. you're going to get more about the narrative when you read it. but this idea about a slave who has access to reading that allows him to change how he sees his lif

the frederick county office has handled multiple ones this week. if you get someone demanding ransom from the outside area code or demands payments through the wire transfers, those are indications that the call is fake. >>> a top montgomery county official asking for a state investigation into the safety of some local bus stops. this comes after he saw a news4 investigation. cameras captured drivers passing stopped school buses even while kids boarded the bus. craig rice chairs the montgomery county council education committee. he requested that the state highway administration check the safety of kids and pedestrians at several bus stops along state roads. >> that's one of the things that we really want to take a look at. we want to focus on why these bus stops are in certain areas, high traffic areas that we know there's a larger risk. >> now, members of maryland's general assembly tell news4 they'll reintroduce legislation in january to double the fines for illegally passing stopped school buses. the fine would increase from $250 to $500. to se

this is what frederick douglass is doing. in the narrative, it is how the textual evidence -- are whites going to see it? the answer ultimately will be no. they don't see it. they can't see the suffering as redemptive for the people of the nation as a whole. this comes later. so, what happens in this particular case, the way in which slaves take on the text, recognize within the text their own experience and try to help others see how that experience is being carried out. by the way, it still with us. in the 20th century, you are going to get preachers and sociologists, w.e.b. dubois is going to pick up on this as well as. there is something in the african-american community that will make it better but they have to pay attention to them. they have to pay attention to that experience. ok? let's take a step back for a moment. when you are reading the book of galatians, one of the things you are going to point out, besides this idea of neither slave nor free -- i want you to think about it and then we will talk. how does the sl

sunrise at 5:47, setting in the 8:00 hour. 77 manassas, 78 dulles, 72 andrews, 78 frederick. still kind of toasty heading into the later hours. the dew point, which helps moisture -- measure the moisture content, upper 60's. 70 frederick. when these numbers are at these levels, it's not that comfortable. when they are the 50's, it's comfortable. in the 60's, it is humid. 65 plus, the humidity is really up there. that is what we are dealing with the next few days, sticky air. the same pattern day after day with the heat and humidity building. showers try to get through here earlier, fall cure county, culpeper county, the western part of the viewing area, but fizzled out. there was active weather from the upper midwest to the deep south. a cold front trying to move to the east. that is something we will be watching in the coming days. i know that it looks ever so close at this point, but the high-pressure parked off the coast is going to keep it at bay. it will try to get closer, but it will be behind before clears out, drops the humidity, and brings more comfortable weather. t

frederick douglass said, i could live for the slaves, but john brown could die for them. whose law was right? let's look at lincoln himself. lincoln was much more steeped in religion than what is acknowledged. he read the bible often. he did not belong to a church, but he read the bible. he had written an anti-christian pamphlet early in his career, but in his own way, he was very religious. he often thought about god. he even approached the cabinet about putting god in the constitution. when he was approached by some religious people. he also issued nine proclamations of prayer on thanksgiving. thomas jefferson didn't even issue one proclamation of prayer on thanksgiving. because he thought it was a combination of church and state. jefferson davis issued 10. they were having a competition there. in lincoln's case, it gives rise to this visionary rhetoric, the house divided, which is from the bible. the gettysburg address, "one nation under god." the second inaugural address has 14 mentions of god, three mentions of prayer and four biblical citations. in a way, a lot of h
