from frederick bailey to frederick douglass, and basically, it was suggested a general by the name of nathan johnson, who suggested that he take the name of sir walter scott's main characters in the book, frederick douglass. susan: and it was the double s, douglas. that always confuses people. kamal mclarin: yes, it made it very unique. susan: before we get into many more details, why is he relevant today? kamal mclarin: he is relevant because he lived a life of agitation. he basically was very focused on equal rights for all, no matter the sex, color or creed. what we find is he lived a life of sacrifice and wanting to see all individuals obtain any and all forms of equality. what we find is he is a universal reformer, and he was very involved in the abolitionist movement, he was involved in the temperance movement. he was also involved in the women's suffrage movement. and he continued to use his voice even after slavery was ended. slavery had been abolished, to basically become sort of the forerunner with others in terms of the early civil rights movement. susan: he also became one

we know a lot about frederick douglas? we do, but the principle reason i am doing this book, and i won't go into the details at all, the reason i spent the last decade on this book is because i encountered a private collection of douglass material from a man incident, georgia of all places, named walter evans. an amazing private collection of scrapbooks, family papers and letters, etc. i encountered it about nine or 10 years ago and it was one of those moments where you have to tell yourself -- damn, if i don't do this book, somebody else will. oh well. that collection was a window particularly into the last third of his life. the older douglass, because that daughterss son and kept these amazing scrapbooks on him. i'm going to talk about the war, and douglass' ideas about the war, and it takes me back to an original subject. i am glad of that. you might notice, maybe you can 't even see it. the subtitle that is my publisher's subtitle that i owned up to it -- "prophet of freedom." label, you that better be ready to defend
