thekinds of reminiscences, day i did this with frederick douglass, the day i saw frederick douglass do that -- it is a little reminiscence published in a newspaper in 1881, by the man who claimed to be the poll worker on the night of the election of 1864, that he had put frederick douglass's ballot in the ballot box. i decided to believe him. because the best part of the story is he lived near douglass, and he says they were walking back into town, douglass lived a mile from town, they were walking back late at night and it was about 10:00 p.m. to go to the telegraph office and learn the national returns of election night. while they are coming into the center of the city, says this came out drunken thugs and challenged douglass, called him the "n" word, and there was a clash between them. but then this test of fire says, testifier says, then they wanted nothing to do with douglass, they scurried back into their holes, and douglas had a physical and political triumph. i do not know if that really happened, but why not? this is the time of frederick douglass. all of these forms were so well attended that the brooklyn daily eagle, a white newspaper, noted in 1892 that "no other group of people were fonder of literary pursuits than african-americans." ida herself was invited to speak on afro-american literature. to open the season on the concorde literary circle. in the concorde baptist church. and true the largest audience that ever attended a literary meeting in that city. washington bee said, ida completely captivated the larger cultivated audience. she also in this period goes into a debate with a really wonderful figure, richard lyons. in brooklyn. she was born of a prosperous free family in new york city. her father's business was ruined in the draft riots of 1863. you look at history, ours is not a history of never having. it is things being taken away. hundreds of black business and institutions were destroyed in that riot, at least one man was launched on clarkson street and torched while hanging from a tree. lyons' family moved to

as you said, frederick douglas and susan p. anthony had been stomping around the country for abolition. many of the first suffragists cut their teeth working in the abolition movement. it was a world, anti-slavery conference in the u.k. where women were told they weren't allowed to participate as speakers on the platform. women don't have rights, what the heck? what are we doing here? sectional politics in the as and conflicts, of course the civil war, divided people within this progressive civil rights movement. in part because when you get to reconstruction, there are are these debates about whether or not you're going to include women in the 15th amendment. and various people got word that some of the southern senators were trying to say yes, let's split the provision for ladies in because we know that's going to sink these bills completely. so it's a much-talked-about, it's a much-talked-about conflict between anthony and stanton and frederick douglas when he says to them, look, i'm going to push for these reconstruction am
