frederick douglas is one of the most recognized african-americans in the country at this time. he was born in slave and maryland and escaped to his freedom as a young adult. throughout his career as an abolitionist, he fought for the .reedom of african-americans and even during the civil war, he lobbied with abraham lincoln, the president, for the recruitment of colored citizens in the war. here on display we are very proud to have frederick douglass in his beaver hat. it's one of our treasures here. we are so proud to have it on display. it is very recognizable from many of his photos. harriet beecher stowe was the woman who wrote the very famous book titled "uncle tom's cabin." she gained her inspiration for this book was living in cincinnati, ohio, so we have a very close local connection to harriet beecher stowe. president lincoln is quoted saying she is the little woman who wrote the book that started a great war. we have a first edition copy of cabin," "uncle tom's and it is owned by the national underground railroad freedom center. the book became a bestseller in the u.s
