we believe deeply that public universities have the responsibility to uphold free speech. we have a constitutional public university. we have a constitutional obligation to do so, even though the rhetoric is divisive and hateful. as doctor gillman has pointed out, there is some exceptions, but that is certainly the general rule. of course as i point out, university leaders have that responsibility from time to time as events may require, to be very condemning of such devices and hateful speech. and when i was a university president, i took that responsibility seriously. we have been, senator gillman and his colleagues and i, have been talking about this in our meetings the last couple of years. my perception, hearing from so many of these leaders, is there is a broad and deep commitment to students. we understand how complicated it is. his questions brought out some of the complications. but we certainly must do it. i think every generation of leaders has to go through some of this education. we have some responsibility there. i think that it is interesting, free speech is
