was writing and he knew freeman, kind of consciously counter-programmed freeman and said, okay, i'm going to write a biography of washington that people can actually read. and give -- and give flexner his credit. he was a beautiful writer. he was a very imaginative man, a very intelligent man. and he did do his research on washington. he did look at the research and did look at the evidence but i think where he was unscrupulous and i believe he was consciously unscrupulous is that he decided, i'm going to extrapolate from the facts to tell a story that i think may well may have happened. do you think if he was sitting here and say i was consciously unscrupulous and take things that were not factual to make a point? in his book he says, you know, he wants to be to the degree that he can be what he called a scientific historian as he described freeman. >> guest: right. >> host: and when i checked -- i mean, he gives a lot of credit to freeman. i mean, he says that freeman -- i think he would agree with you, this is the best, most scholarly work in terms of its depth, but he wants more

he did write privately, yes, he did respect freeman's intelligence, but he also wrote that freeman wasery difficult to read, he was very inaccessible. and that flexner wanted to make washington accessible, and flexner talked constantly about how he outsold his competition. that was very important to him. if i could be more specific about how i think he could be unscrupulous is that he would take letters or documents that would present very basic facts. say, for example, letters that say washington returned home from the french and indian war, okay? washington was sick, and that's all the letters say. so flexner goes from there to tell a story about washington riding up sagging over the saddle of his horse, sliding out, crawling up the stairs in mount vernon and throwing himself on his bed. and then a letter from sally fairfax arrives, and he leaps out, and he's suddenly energized. so flexner would, in an unscrupulous way i think it is -- and i'm trying not to be hostile to him. i say refreshingly unscrupulous because he saw that in order in some ways to make washington more salable and
