thomas frieden.rs for disease control and prevention in atlanta with very alarming news. the first case of ebola now diagnosed in the united states. he pointed out this individual, a male, left liberia on cement 19th. arrived in the united states cement 20th. showed no symptoms at that time. four days later he began showing symptoms. on december 26th, two days after that, some care was start. it was only last sunday, september 28th, when this patient was admitted into a hospital. he is in intensive care, showing severe conditions right now. dr. san did jay gupta monitoring what's going on. they say everyone who was in contact with him in the four days between the first symptoms september 24th and sunday, september 28th, now are in isolation because potentially they could have been infected with ebola. >> that's exactly right. and you know, that's probably the most concerning part of the whole story. we've been talking about what happened today is a first. it is very historic. the first patient being

tom frieden sought to reassure americans that a case of ebola discovered here in the u.s. is not cause for alarm. >> the bottom line here is that i have no doubt that we will control this importation or this case of ebola so that it does not spread widely in this country. >> reporter: frieden said the patient, who is not being identified, left liberia in west africa on september 19th, arriving in the u.s. on the 20th. the patient had no symptoms when he left liberia or when landing stateside, but four or five days later he started feeling sick. he sought care last friday, but then went home. then two days ago he was admitted to texas health presbyterian hospital in dallas. since the man was not symptomatic on the airline, he would not have been contagious at that time, frieden said. the cdc does not believe anyone who was on the flight with him was exposed. >> it is certainly possible that someone who had contact with this individual, a family member or other individual, could develop ebola in the coming weeks, but there is no doubt in my mind that we will stop it here. >>

frieden. >> good afternoon, everybody, and thank you for joining us. as you have been hearing from us, ebola is a serious disease. it's only spread by direct contact with someone who is sick with the virus, and it's only spread through body fluids. the incubation period is eight to ten days after exposure, can be as short as 2 days or as long as 21 days. it's a severe disease with a high case fatality rate even with the best of care. but there are core tried and true public health interventions that stop it. today we are providing the information that an individual traveling from liberia has been diagnosed with ebola in the united states. this individual left liberia on the 19th of september, arrived in the u.s. on the 20th of september, had no symptoms when departing liberia or entering this country, but four or five days later, around the 24th of september, began to develop symptoms. on the 26th of september initially sought care and sunday, the 28th of september, was admitted to a hospital

press conference and that can only mean one thing because i had been told earlier that director tom friedena press conference if the results consider positive. and now at 5:30, they're expected to announce that we have the first case here in the united states of ebola that did not arrive on a medevac plane. as best we can tell, this patient, a man who came from liber liberia, was asymptomatic on the plane on the way over, which is good news because if a patient is not showing symptoms and there is not some intimate contact with bodily fluids, like lie ho liely hood of transmission is very low. but upon arrival, he for tt got sick and went to the hospital with a very high fever and perhaps vomiting and was put into a strict isolation unit there. they don't have the type of isolation unit that they do at emory hospital or nebraska or nih. so the centers for disease control will in the next few hours be sending a go team of three to four people to dallas to assist with the infection control there and with the treatment of this patient. so this is big breaking news because this has long been su

let me start by saying i completely echo director frieden's comments. we happened to see each other in sierra leone while he was there. i'd like to preface my remarks with the fact -- with the understanding that i am mostly speaking from my experience in sierra leone and liberia. by remarks tend to be skewed towards those countries which are currently experiencing the worst parts of the outbreak. and when we say the situation is dire in sierra leone and liberia, we just can't emphasize that strongly enough. what we are facing is an end- ofdays scenario locally, biblical proportions. and the people of those countries largely feel abandoned by the international community. however, that response is now starting to trickle in and there is hope, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, hopefully, although it is going to get worse before the it's better. i'd like you to keep in mind when we're talking about at least those two countries, we are talking about two countries that have endured almost a decade of civil conflict. we are approximate 11 years out fr

frieden, a group of staffers like myself were at the cdc headquarters and were able to meet with your team combatting and organizing the response. one of the things we heard was when it comes to public infrastructure the health ministers don't get as much attention as other ministers. how is this outbreak changing that environment? are we able to leverage that situation to get them to pay more attention for long-term growth? >> it is generally our experience in public health that people pay most attention to us in the middle of an outbreak or epidemic. within countries you will find that health ministries are generally weak compared to other ministries and that the public health aspect of that is particularly weak. congressional initiative from senator harkin and others to establish public health institutes that would be able to run laboratory networks and train and host operation centers are very important. and it would be tragic if we didn't ensure that as we respond to ebola we also put in place the kind of systems that would prevent the next outbreak like this from getting out of

tom frieden is back from the tour of the affected west africa nations.e joins us from the cdc headquarters in atlanta. doctor, good morning. just how grave is the situation? >> it is the world's first epidemic and spiraling out of control. it's bad now. it's going to get worse in the very near future. there is still a window of opportunity to tamp it down but that window is closing. we really have to act now. >> so what do we need to do now? >> now, we need positive support countries with resources, with technical experts and with cooperation. too many places are sealing off these countries. if we do that paradoxically it's going to reduce safety. whether we like it or not we're all connected. it's all within our interests to help tamp this down and control it. >> doctor you were there in the trenches meeting with the patients, the victims. what was it like? what did you learn? >> it's really horrific i spoke with a young woman, 22-year-old, fourth year student of english. her sister-in-law came in died from ebola. she held a 10-year-old niece in her han

frieden and everybody here at the center for disease control for welcoming me here today. tom and his team just gave me an update on the ebola outbreak in west africa. our efforts to help mobilize the international community to fight it, and the steps we're taking to keep people here at home safe. tom and his team are doing outstanding work between the specialists on the ground in west africa and here at headquarters. they've got hundreds of professionals who are working tirelessly on this issue. this is the largest international response in the history of the cdc. after this, i'll be meeting with some of these men and women, including some who recently returned from the front lines of the outbreak, and they represent public service at its very best. so i just want them to know how much the american people appreciate them. many of them are serbing far away from home, away from their families. they're doing heroic work, and serving in some unbelievably challenging conditions. working through exhaustion, day and night, and many have volunteered to go back. so we're very, ver
