[applause] now, the thing that i want to do is i want to introduce a man who i greatly admire, who has done so many wonderful things here in san francisco and who understands education. in fact, early in his career, the mayor was actually a member of the staff, maybe the director, of an upward bound program, and it basically is doing what we are doing today, which is to try to take high school students and get them into a college setting in a way that they can be successful. a number of years ago, he was having his own frisco experience, so i want to do -- introduce our mayor who is doing a terrific job, mayor edwin lee. [applause] mayor lee: good morning. i am glad to be here has your mayor and also to join this distinguished panel of people utilizing the funding opportunities from the gates foundation, working with our school district as well as our community college, and to talk with you today about my own personal experience related to college. just last month, i had a very specia

san francisco unified school district, and we are here today to here todayfrisco -- to talk about frisco day and some of the opportunities you need to take advantage of to go to college. >> i understand you were the first in your family to go to college? >> my parents did not have a formal education. they migrated to the united states. my dad had only an eighth-grade education. my mom only finished elementary school. they did not know much about college. it was not like they could really help us with it. we were lucky we have counselors and different people who attacked us on the shoulder and asked if we ever thought about going to college or doing something. that was the first time we ever thought about it. we did not know what you had to do, and luckily, these people believed in us more than we believed ourselves. this woman said we were going to make it, we were going to be successful. it has never been easy because life threw us a lot of challenges. i understand you have had some troubles in terms of making a decision of having a family and then having to go back to work and still go

frisco day is telling you, here is the first step. but that is not all of it. we have changed the system. we talk to each other, work together, make sure we are planning together and giving what you need. someone said you cannot go to college without help, and that is true. you have to have financial help, wraparound services, individual faculty and friends who understand your journey so that you can go along with them in that journey to success. without all of those things going on, it is very tough for most people. and what happens that is really detrimental for me and other people is you start thinking inside of your head and thinking you are alone, the only one experiencing this particular set of problems, and you are not. when you go to college, like everything else in life, you have to start networking. you have to start networking with your fellow students, talk to them. goethe your instructors and say to them, "give me some of your time. i want to talk to you." they will talk to you because at city college, that is what our mission is. our mission is to

frisco day on the 29th? are you doing that? >> i'm not sure about that. president mendoza: ok. so on april 29, all of our seniors will be going to the various colleges, the city college, san francisco state and ucff and we're going to have about 1,500 students at each of the sites and this is going to be a college transition day and so any of our students who are not planning on going onto college, we're going to sign them up for city college so we can ensure all of our students have opportunity to go onto college. that's an exciting day and that's part of the bridge to success program, compliments of the gateway -- i'm sorry, the gate foundation. superintendent garcia: and they're getting priority registration as well. which is great. president mendoza: thank you both. >> i think we do have a senior that is graduating also, right? and what are your plans after high school? >> i am planning to go to uc-san diego for college as a premed student. thank you. president mendoza: congratulations. that's great. thank you both. item e is the parent advisory council, p.a.c., report. do

host: miscall from frisco, texas. john, a republican.aller: i want to talk about the israeli-palestinian conflict and president obama this comment about that yesterday with the joint conference with the prime minister. what we saw yesterday was three stunning developments in the american farm policy establishment as outlined by president obama. first we saw that president obama has completely discarded assurances previously given to the state of israel that we would not in any way make or force pre-1967 borders on the israelis. that is number one. number two, what we saw was president obama is essentially advocating the destruction of israel. the israeli prime minister says that the borders on which the president offers is indefensible. it is essentially the destruction of israel. the third thing the president obama did was implicitly recognize what is essentially a terrorist state. it is no different than the afghan government under the former leadership of the taliban and al qaeda. so in spite of efforts by this administration to portr
