let's look at futurecast through 8:00 tomorrow morning. it's the scattered pattern that will help us out. where the downpours occur, they won't last that long or be that heavy and keeps the flooding potential pretty low unless a downpour camps out in exactly the wrong spot. in terms of the wind damage potential, that's something else we have to monitor. the rain in the past 24 hours, just short of 2 inches of rain around ben lomond, almost 1 1/4 for san rafael, current wind speeds 10 to 15 miles an hour sustained with some spots in the 20 to 30-mile an range, but the gusts are concerned when the wind does unexpectedly increase in intensity, 44-mile gusts at sfo, 36 miles an hour at santa rosa, but not as strong as tuesday and likely not strong enough for significant wind damage potential, but we'll watch it the next few hours. we'll look at a dry weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. >>> sadly, these storms caused two deaths in sonoma county. first responders found a man's body inside a culvert on franz valley road in

futurecast will start to show some sprinkles in the presunrise hours of tomorrow morning with the bulk of the light rain moving in as the sun is coming up. just offshore at that point, starting to make its way onto the north bay. moderate rainfall rates will line up with some of the spots that the heaviest rain with our most recent atmospheric river. let's take a look at the flood watch that's in effect. just for the north bay this time around. of course, there's a flood warning along the russian river outliered in red. in green, that's the flood watch that will continue through friday afternoon. it doesn't have to be in effect all that long, because we'll taper off. certainly possible as that rain falls into unsaturated ground and breezy. not the heavy rain or strong winds that we had yesterday, but still enough that we'll have to watch for the possibility of flooding and the tree damage with wind gusts mostly topping out in the 30 to 40 miles an hour range. a few gusts closer to the 40 to 50 miles an hour range, strong enough to result in sporadic power outages. a longer look at futu

we'll take you through early tomorrow morning on futurecast. it shows scattered showers and when they're less organized, they're less likely to produce heavy downpours in one particular spot that would result in any flooding threat. let's talk about how much rain has added up just with this system the last 24 hours. amounts have largely been about where we expected them to be. this is over the past several days, since friday. we'll show you the last 24 hours in a later newscast. you see how much has added up during the course of the last seven days, almost a foot of rain around kentfield and over 10 inches of rain for ben lomond, san francisco 4 1/2 inches of rain after january was almost completely dry. the concern this evening will be the gusty winds. the current wind is at 31 miles an hour in san francisco, 20 miles an hour in half moon bay. the gusts are more capable of doing damage. widespread gusts in the 20 to 30-mile-an-hour range and a gust at sfo close to 40 miles an hour and some of the strongest winds are still going to occur later

some pockets of heavier rain show up in yellow on futurecast. those move through the first half of the day on saturday. if we were going to see any even localized flooding threat out of this system, that would coincide with the pockets of heavier rain. let's look how much has added up so far. the amounts are modest. close to an inch of rain in petaluma, generally half inch to an in of rain for the north bay. for the rest of the bay area it's between a 0.1-inch and a few tenths of an inch of total rainfall. the exception, livermore and the santa clara valley, san jose only picked up 0.06 thus far of rain, but there is more to come. this is a double-peaked atmospheric river followed up by a weaker atmospheric river later next week, so a lot of rain chances over the next seven days. you may wonder why are we calling this a double-peaked atmospheric river instead of three different ones? it's because we never completely get out of atmospheric river conditions due to the amount of moisture flowing through the atmosphere over our heads. even when the

so let's take a look at futurecast.e go back to the floor map here and talk about how the rain is going to approach us and start to move in. we'll start at 5:00 on thursday morning as the rain is just starting to edge towards the coast. these are mostly light to moderate rain showers as opposed to the torrential rain. thursday evening into thursday night, still light to moderate rain showers but once you add up all of this rain that falls through the day on thursday, it's not going to be the amount is that we had today. we're talking about amounts mostly ranging from just under 0.5 an inch in rain shadowed locations, mostly 1.5 inch to over one inch of rain on the high end of the spectrum. over an inch expected around san rafael. could have a couple of lingering showers friday morning. other than that 20% chance of a shower, that starts a period of dry weather into early next week. on the cool side. temperatures running three to four degrees below normal. after this wet stretch of weather to begin the month of february,

and the futurecast model here showing you as we get into. well, it kind of swept right by as we get into the afternoon today. we do expect moderate rain to kind of pick up. and then by tonight, right around dinnertime, it starts to die down and we are left with just on and off light rain for the evening hours. if you are thinking about getting outdoors, and then tomorrow morning we again are joined by scattered showers. but you can see not much going on for sunday. so sunday is actually going to be, you know, a little unsettled, but a little bit of a break before the next storm comes in on monday. meanwhile, our temperatures this morning a lot warmer, 53 in san francisco right now, the inner east bay, 53 in livermore, and afternoon highs upper 50s to low 60s. so relatively mild temps. light winds for the most part will be a little breezy at times on and off. light rain, scattered showers. a little bit more moderate this afternoon, and then we get into monday and the colder storm drops in. drops snow levels and brings us chillier temperatures

futurecast now through tomorrow morning. giving way to showers more off after midnight. a few of them out there in the presunrise hours but going from 4:00 tomorrow morning to 4:00 in the afternoon, the trend toward less and less shower activity is going to continue. there could be a few hit or miss showers, we will see the last of the sprinkles quieting down that begins our stretch of dry weather carrying us through the second weekend in february. how much additional rainfall are we talking about? the short version is, not a lot. the flooding potential remains very low. we are talking maybe a third of an inch of additional rain on top of what has already accumulated. southern half of the bay area, a similar story. the winds are a bigger concern. gusts over 40 miles per hour should diminish. it will be breezy overnight. just not as windy as the peak conditions the next few hours. even 40 miles per hour gusts not likely to cause any significant problems. still something we will continue to monitor. there is still a winter storm warning in effect until midday tomorrow. the

let's switch over to futurecast. this evening, basically now, through 5:00 tomorrow evening. you can see first of all how fast the rain exits. this will be gone, even the lingering showers. we're going to see the potential for a couple pop-up showers tomorrow. few and far in sides and i think you'll be able to get that done tomorrow. but another wave of rain is expected to move through tomorrow and for most of the time frame, you will be seeing dry conditions, but tomorrow night. the first wave of light rain showers will start to move in. those will intensify as we head from 5:00 a.m. on thursday to 5:00 a.m. you'll see more and more showers and some locally heavy downpours. they won't be as heavy as what we saw today. this will be on the low end of the atmospheric river scale. but it is going to produce more moisture onto already saturated soils. we'll have to watch that carefully throughout the next couple of days. after that, the rain chances are really going to go away throughout the weekend. let's add up the rai

let's get into the details of how this is going to shape up, from the futurecast 4:00 tomorrow morningh 10:00 thursday, the rain is going to become widespread pretty quickly, mostly light to moderate rain, but with the yellow, locally heavy downpours, and localized flooding is going to become more of a concern. 10:00 tomorrow morning through 4:00 in the afternoon, the rain is going to keep coming at us in waves. keep the umbrella and the rain jacket handy throughout the day, the gap in the action by late tomorrow afternoon is not going to last very long, winding the clock forward through 10:00 in the evening, more rain is likely to surge in from the pacific, starting to become more scattered by late evening, but by this point, 10:00 tomorrow night, that is when we will feel the strongest wind, some of the data says probably around 30 to 40 miles per hour, there is a different forecast that has a different scenario that is quite a bit stronger. from 10:00 tomorrow evening until friday morning, that is when the showers will become more sparse, the first half of friday is going to bring t

again, here's 4.30, on futurecast. you can see how widespread that yellow, orange and red is on the radar. that's some cooler air stacked up behind this atmospheric river. and with that, we do see a punch of those strong winds of those heavy rains right there together right before you're leaving work tonight. so something to also anticipate for your latter half of the day to skies will clear out nicely into tomorrow before our next system and a colder system that into thursday. this first one resulting in the worst opportunity of flooding. we, as i mentioned, have that flood warning up along the russian river. flood advisories for the entirety of the rest of the bay area. futurecast shows that drying happening tomorrow. but only briefly as we move into thursday, it is a colder system. this will still bring rain for the bay area. but some amazing news for the sierra absolutely getting buried in some heavy snowfall in the sierra come thursday. that's exactly what we needed after last month. you can see the feet up on fee

futurecast, wind gusts is showing a much calmer morning. we had winds peaking yesterday and last night of above 50 miles per hour. so it was a aggressively windy day yesterday. futurecast does show snow up in the sierra still lingering with us a few lingering mid morning showers and then the rest of the day dries out. nicely. the weekend stays nice and dry. we've well or did at this point. i think we definitely need that come tuesday. we'll see a few lingering snow fall up in the sierra, but not anything for the bay just yet. intel wednesday of next week. and this is going to be interesting. a cold frontal boundary along with this does mean we could even see some bay area snowfall at the top of our bay area mountains come wednesday of next week. of course, that's still a little ways away. so we'll see how low that snow level goes. but there is potential by the time we reach thursday, snowfall really piling up again in the sierra and a lot of rain in the bay, too. this active pattern could take us to the end of next week. today's rainfall no

let's look at the futurecast radar. the simulation of where it's going to head out.or the most part light to moderate rain. our flooding potential is going to remain fairly limited. not impossible but i think the greatest threat is going to shape up as heavier rain moves in. this takes us from 4:00 in the morning to 10:00 a.m. this includes the peak of rain showers. showing some of those heaviest downpours that are going to continue through the afternoon. this is when we see the cold front as part of the storm system driving a narrow band of very heavy rainfall and gusty winds across the bay area. we call it a narrow cold front extending down to the south. this is where the atmosphere gets squeezed to the great extent and that rings out more moisture and produces some of the gustier winds. but it's not going to last too long. from 4:00 to midnight see the heaviest rain moving out. we should start to see things drying out with things getting a longer chance to dry out tomorrow night into wednesday. in terms of the flooding potential that is going to be tomorrow. which

futurecast shows the return of rain during pre-dawn hours tomorrow. at increasingly lower elevations tomorrow. tomorrow is going to be a huge snow maker for the sierra great news because we need that before we dry out into the weekend. sierra snowfall will amount to several feet. in fact, donner summit looking at the potential of over 40 inches. the bay area tapping into another really good dose of rain from this. we do have avalanche concerns in light blue for this year. so something to note, if you do see some backcountry skiing temperatures in the 50's for your highs today. a cool one for sure. and we stay cool in this forecast. it's feeling like winter now. tomorrow is a rainy one. a cool rain. friday morning. a few lingering showers before clearing and drying out into the weekend raid. >> bridges still looking at 70 minutes long. 85 to menlo park. we started off this morning with some has are scattered around those highways. people are definitely driving a lot slower because roads are slick from yesterday's rain. 44 minutes on the senate over jus

we'll put that into futurecast and play this forward. here comes the batch we were just looking at in the morning. this is 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 in the morning. everybody kind of gets phase one, which is widespread, roads get wet, not too heavy. that will take us through the morning. that'll clear out and look at the afternoon. this is different. once we get into the afternoon tomorrow, we'll get back towards the center of the thing, so a little more energy and the possibility for an isolated thunderstorm. and there are better odds that we'll get an isolated thunderstorm from it this system tomorrow than what we had from that five day rainy period. this storm is built differently. and through the afternoon, don't be surprised if maybe you hear a rumble of thunder. that certainly looks like one of the more impressive time frame. and so this is late afternoon. and yes, this would probably be more in the north bay than anywhere else, but everybody has a chance tomorrow, 20% chance that you will get an isolated thunderstorm. and the light widespr

this is the radar simulation from futurecast from 6:00 this evening through 6:00 tomorrow morning. widespread light to moderate rain, going to maybe see a little yellow showing up, the pockets of heavier downpours. in general, we're talking about light to moderate rain continuing to soak a pretty parched landscape. some of the heaviest rain will fall tomorrow, especially the first half of the day. this takes us from 6:00 tomorrow morning through 6:00 tomorrow evening. you see that band of yellow. that is moving through midmorning tomorrow would coincide with probably the greatest flooding possibly in this first peak and showers taper off from 6:00 tomorrow evening, the showers light and intermittent. it won't rain everywhere all the time. east bay in the santa clara valley you'll be a dry pocket saturday night into the first half of sunday while the north bay sees more or less consistent light to moderate rain and 6:00 sunday through 6:00 in the evening, light to moderate rain showers continuing gradually making its way farther back into the east bay and the santa clara valley. the

futurecast just up until 11:00 shows the showers winding down. we will be largely rain free as we head through the rest of this evening and we start to dry out a little bit. more on the way later on this week. total rainfall since the system began on friday, and over ten-and-a-half inches of rain has accumulated around kentfield. almost six-and-a-half inches of rain in santa rosa. san francisco, over four inches of rain. erasing that rainfall deficit we were running before the system moved in. almost two inch ins dublin. you finally got into the action after a few mostly dry days. the wind gusty, almost 80 miles per hour along the coast as the band of heaviest rain moved in this afternoon. most of the gusts were in the 40 to 50 miles per hour range but got up close to 60 miles per hour for the strongest gusts at sfo. numerous damage reports coming in from across the region. every circle on the map, every icon is a separate flooding or wind damage report relayed for law enforcement and emergency responders to the national weather service. there ha

let's look at futurecast as we head through 6:00 tomorrow. it shows the rain spreading back out and becoming heavier during the late night and early morning hours on saturday. some of the heaviest rain will move through around midmorning saturday and then we get into more of an off-and-on shower pattern for most of the bay area with the rain being more persistent in the north bay. how much rain have we added up so far? amounts have been modest to this point. petaluma had almost 1 inch of rainfall to this point, but otherwise less than a half inch and barely more than a trace in san jose and dublin. there is more on the way. the rain chart over the next seven days shows multiple good chances of widespread rain as we head through most of next week, little lulls here and there that correspond to a break in the atmospheric river, but this first peak in this double-peaked atmospheric river will not give way to a full fledged break in conditions. the second peak will be a lower intensity, but because conditions never really fully diminish, we'll se

here's a look at the futurecast model. tomorrow morning we wake up with scattered showers, but by the afternoon it is calming down. if you do not have to be on the highways during the afternoon, perhaps avoid it. take a look at the oranges and the yellows and reds indicating downpour over the area. it does move out by tomorrow night. we are already drying out as it moves south and east. it will continue to pile up snow in the sierra, and it will head towards southern california for us again. several inches of rainfall expected. meanwhile in the sierra. feet of snow with levels all the way down to about 3000ft at some point. colfax is 2400ft, and that estimate there showing at least an inch. and southern california going to get some rain. thankfully, not as much as we are, because even though they needed desperately, we know they are also very sensitive to the slides due to the burn scar areas. tomorrow morning, temperatures will be in the mid 40s to mid 50s. afternoon highs upper 50s to low 60s. and your extended forecast

futurecast from 1 1:00 this evening through 7:00 tomorrow morning shows dry conditions for most of tonightle sprinkles during the wee hours of thursday morning, and then the rain will start to move in just before the sun will come up. there will be pockets of heavier rain. flooding not likely during the morning commute, but it will be wet and slow. something to keep in mind as you're ing ahead for the morning rush hour. from 7:00 tomorrow through 1:00 in the afternoon, we're going to see more waves of light to moderate rain for the most part, but occasional heavier downpours. and if those occasional heavier downpours happen to camp out where we least need the rain, mostly looking at the north bay with the statement. then localized flooding will remain a concern. and from 1:00 to 7:00 in the evening, more off and on showers. even the outside chance for a couple of rumbles of thunder, but we didn't hear any of that. it's up b likely that we'll get much of it with this one. still more showers are possible through tomorrow night. 7:00 in the evening through 7:00 a.m. on friday. those waves of

we'll look at several days worth of data on futurecast, big picture perspective. we'll stay calm.s a chance for a couple showers to sneak towards us by tuesday night into early wednesday. one of the other forecast models brings a better chance of rain into the bay area wednesday, but they agree the next good chance of rain arrives thursday with more snow in the sierra by that point. that's still a few days away. let's take a look back at how we did with this latest series of storms. before everything arrived we showed you the seven-day rainfall forecast beginning last thursday through yesterday, but we want to look back at how we did compared to the actual numbers. we'll start in san jose where we forecast 2.6 inches of rain, actually received just over 1 1/2 inches. in addition to the specific number, we gave you the range of possibilities, the bust and boom amounts, and 1 1/2 inches of rain is well above the bust number. that forecast could have been better or a lot worse. concord, we forecast over 4 inches of rain, 2 1/4 inches, which isn't bad and well above the bust number, a

all right, here's your futurecast. you see, tomorrow morning, sun up at 707. not going to see it. we do see precipitation in earnest across the northern portion of the bay area. thus the flood watch, in effect an isolated shower in the east bay. but by the evening commute all is said and done, but behind it a lot of cool air is filtering in. tonight. we'll still see some temperatures into the 30s and into the 40s overnight. tomorrow's outside number 59 degrees. and throughout the sunnyvale area, cupertino and campbell, san jose for sure. willow glen. otherwise everybody is pretty uniform into the mid 50s, which is below average for this time of the year. but i want to walk you through the extended forecast, because we have a lot of cold air filtering in from the north. look at your overnight low on saturday and sunday night. now by tuesday we begin to cloud up. that will lead to rain showers on wednesday. and claudine, that's what i'm thinking. we're going to see some snow in our local mountains. >> all right. we'll look out for it. thanks so much, roberta. and wildfire prevention

here's futurecast radar simulation through 1:00 tomorrow morning.in, these are sporadic, very minor showers. they're going to be enough to wet down the roads in a couple spots for the morning commute, but they'll be more miss than hit and won't add up much more on top of what's accumulated. let's look at the numbers for this particular round of rainfall. over the past 24 hours, we've added up quite a bit of rain in the santa cruz mountains, over 2 1/2 inches of rain for ben lomond, 1 1/2 for san rafael, just over an inch of rain for santa rosa, san francisco just over a 1/2 inch and about a 1/3 of an inch for livermore and san jose. the current sustained winds are in the 15 to 20-mile-an-hour range on the high end. the gusts are a little stronger, but beginning to subside, still a 37-mile-an-hour gust in oakland and a wind advisory continuing for everybody but the north bay until 4:00 tomorrow morning, but the winds are going to be dying down within the next couple hours before that wind advisory does expire in the presunrise hours of friday morning

as we head through the rest of this evening, this is the futurecast radar simulation from right now through hours. you'll see the rain getting out of here quickly as we go through the next three to four hours. we should be drying out. we'll stay mostly dry tomorrow. but there is a chance for a couple little splash and dash showers. rain chances in the 20% range, which is when we typically leave them out. and we're going to see mostly a break in the rain chances as we head through the day tomorrow and the winds are going to be dying down as well. there is still a wind advisory in effect along the coast and further inland as well. it was expanded earlier today. and the north bay where the winds have started to subside, but this will take a little while throughout the rest of the evening. let's take a look at those hour-by-hour wind gusts through the rest of tonight and tomorrow. while we still have blustery conditions across the bay area at that moment, the winds are going to shift and then die down. but that shift in wind direction doesn't mean they'll be calm. still some breezy conditions o

i will take radar off and i'll show it futurecast looks like. that period and we will keep your eye on the timestamp on the bottom. that was all sunday and now we are getting to monday. this we need to look at. that looks different. the timing gets us into monday afternoon. that is the pattern you see on the radar when atmospheric river is coming onshore. you have this well-defined , it's like a fire hose, pointed at california, and most important way, we can follow that to the subtropics if we keep going. that is the long fetch of moisture that these atmospheric rivers are composed of. just to come away with a better handle on how that one, at this point in the forecast models, will impact us. were picking up where we left off. monday afternoon. you can see the atmospheric river going farther than i can walk and that will play it forward. that's monday night. this is tuesday morning, tuesday afternoon. a fairly long period of time under the influence of that one. it clears out on wednesday. we get a little break. there's another system that com

look at these colors you're seeing here on the futurecast, indicating high rain rates at times likelyding on the roads. localized flood advisories due to on ramps and off ramps and things like that being affected. i think that's a good probability there into tuesday evening. then that line clears out actually pretty quickly. by 11:00 tuesday night, skies start to clear. so rain projections into monday, mainly the north bay through 6:00 or so. but look how things really start to fill in for tuesday. most areas in the coastal mountains seeing at least 2 to 3in of rain. and for places like san francisco and san jose, could see another inch or two of rain over 48 hour window. so wednesday right now looks to be a mostly dry day. then here comes that colder storm system, one that could bring snow levels down to 4000ft from thursday night into friday. and then right now the weekend. a few early morning showers there on saturday, but next weekend is trying to trend a bit drier as we go through the forecast. but let's bring you the before picture for the sierra again, the snow pack numbers hav

in the meantime, futurecast, here's your forecast model we tomorrow.ell, it's light rain across the bay area less today. and but again, the precipitation starts to head northward and then sinks southward again as the atmosphere river briefly ships northward on sunday comes right back and smack dab right across the bay area into your overnight monday into tuesday. it's all courtesy partly of his big area of low pressure, which is interacting with the atmospheric river, bringing us rain and snow to the sierra nevada. so snow in the high country and my goodness gracious and they need it. we no flow starts to kick in a little bit later on in the week and then we'll start to see things died back. but it's going to be quite a wet spell of weather for us. in fact, there's a flood alert that's in effect. get this from reading all the way down to watsonville and santa cruz county from the sierra nevada all the way to the coast and of course, excessive rain called fall could cause flooding in the areas where low-lying some of the roads and certainly the rivers a

and our futurecast illustrates a line of showers slicing through the bay area at 9:00 sunrise tomorroworning. 707a hit and miss scattered shower. look at the core. it's right here because you can see the precipitation in that counterclockwise position, and it is out of here by tomorrow evening's commute. if you are driving tomorrow to the greater lake tahoe area, we do have snow in their forecast and locally our snow level will be down to 3000ft, which means we could have a dusting of snow atop mount diablo and mount hamilton. as far as tahoe is concerned, 24in of snow expected in the highest elevations. that will be your total by the time this is all said and done tomorrow. late afternoon tonight, overnight 37 degrees. boy, that's chilly with that cooler air mass filtering in with the passage of this strong, warm front. here you have it potentially advisories in effect for the cold weather on saturday and sunday with that hard freeze in effect by sunday. claudine, i don't see any rain after this system until potentially wednesday. >> okay, we'll take the break while we've got it. than

here's futurecast. so obviously the rain coming into the bay tonight and you can see that snow rolling up to the sierra as we get later in the evening. and that continues tomorrow. so we see that next bump in this is tuesday morning. and then we get into our tuesday afternoon, very involved with rain here in the bay area and the snow will start to get going drop those temperatures down as we get later into the night on tuesday. and you see that once we start to wrap it up here, you know, the parties still going in this year's, if you're not already up there this afternoon, you kind of have to wait it out. wednesday would be your next shot to head up there. and there is more snow expected on thursday. this is that for system. we're talking about one to 2 feet. and then there's more to be added to it as we get into thursday. so this is great news for our snow pack, but obviously want to make sure you're ready for it. a live look from tahoe. now. you can see that there is a little bit of snow in the distan

here's a look at the futurecast model picking it up for you this afternoon 5:00.now have some rain for lake county as well as in the north bay. but six 7:00 it looks to kind of hold steady just above the golden gate bridge, just above i-80. can't rule out a few sprinkles, but most of the wet weather looks like it's going to begin to slide in during the evening hours. and then tomorrow morning we're going to start out with scattered showers, and it will pick up in the afternoon. right now, tuesday looks to be a bit of a soaker, especially for the afternoon before it begins to shift into southern california. on wednesday, we get a little bit of a break before the next system rolls in. this one again bringing with it another round. atmospheric river number three, we'll call it. snow levels are going to be dropping, perhaps down to about 3000ft, which means we may see a dusting in some of our higher elevations here as well. we'll have to play it out and see how the timing goes. by friday we're drying out and right now it looks like we are dry for the weekend. but betw
