g for g company. 328. which is york's company. these items were found far outside the 82nd division and the 328 entry sector in a narrow ravine as described in ll accounts of the battle. >> it's amazing that much material was left on the battlefield. you would think by now a hundred years later certainly souvenir hunters or others would have come through. were you surprised at how much material was still available there? >> not really. the argan is littered. i've worked myself on my own roject for about five years. we even found more than was found at this location. after the war there were american teams actually just following the battle that came through and picked up most of the big stuff. most of what we find and is cartridges, smaller pieces of equipment. all the large stuff was picked up. anywhere you go on the argonne you'll find similar amounts of material. >> we talked about doug mastriano's effort. his sergeant york discovery expedition. they helped dedicate a trail and monument at their location over 10 years ago. how did the french government and other authorities react to his findings? > i cannot really say. he posted several letters of endorsement and this sort of thing but if you read them they're not letters of endorsement. s far as i know number one m mastriano never received the official permission from the french archeological services which is mr. edefoss for that region. never issued the permits to do hat. the local town mayors are the same ones that approved his putting the monument and trail in. >> in addition to your work on the sergeant york project you spent a couple days with mr. mastriano in 2008. what was that like? >> number one i was just rprised when we started that they use no gps or no anything to record where they find artifacts. he pretty much briefed us all and we all went in opposite directions. later we returned with literally bags of artifacts and he would just write down, you know, by german machine gun position or whatever just a general location for where the tems were found. it seemed he concentrated all his efforts around where he initially thought this item or incident occurred. i asked him what about the top of the hill? have you been up there yet? he said no he hadn't. we went up there and found a massive nest of german -- you could tell, the mobile german machine guns up this just right above the york spot. that's when i knew something was wrong. mr. mastriano claims that he ound the exact charges for sergeant york. it's impossible to say with 100% certainty being that he like hundreds of other soldiers were armed with the similar weapons and so thisfore to say with any certainty that cartridges you found belonged to a specific person i think are impossible. dr. nolan's research area we also found cartridges both 45 30.06 automatics and springfield cartridges fired from the 1917 infield like york carried. none of us would ever say with any certainty that any of these cartridges were specifically fired by any one individual. that's just impossible. >> tell ullstrom about the procedure that you used to find material. obviously the metal detectors are used. what is your experience with the technology? how successful have you been in particular in the york battlefield? >> i've been using a metal detector since i was probably 15 years old so right now we're looking at, you know, 40 years experience with the metal detector. basically i didn't join either team really. i just assisted them. when we got to dr. nolan's site, they had already been there twice. and i didn't know all of the people that were involved in the previous metal detector work but me and an archeologist from the university of south carolina, we took over the initial site down the bottom of the ravine and we did basically a hundred percent search. where, you know, you grid off an area and the coil of your metal detector will pass over a hundred percent of the ground. you try to retrieve every artifact you can. this is something that wasn't done that i saw over at the other site. >> you grid off an area. how do you incorporate g.p.s. into your work? >> the g.p.s., when the metal detector operator finds an artifact he'll recover it and place it in a bag. and then put a red pin flag on it. that is basically so it won't get lost so the g.p.s. operator can find it. he will come up and the g.p.s. that dr. nolan was using was survey grade equipment. not just a standard, you know, garmin hand held or something like that. is then put on into a program like art g.i.s. where an artifact distribution map can be made and you can display where that artifact was found in relation to terrain features, physical features, and other artifacts. >> you mentioned mr. mastriano's team using a german battlefield map. which maps did they -- your team rely on in terms of gridding off the area and pin pointing the location that you found? >> it's a series of information . number one, one very valuable one was the u.s. army grave registration services. following the war they went in there and exhumed the remains of the soldiers that were killed. they were listed as being birr idiosyncrasy where they fell. where they were buried is right at the site. they were listed as being buried right where they fell. these coordinates are recorded n the national archives. york's commanders drew a map. and i'm not sure of the date it was drawn. but they drew a map that indicated york's route, you know, his patrol route to this ravine and where the action occurred. 82nd division history gives a very detailed account of the movements and patrols. all these agree. when you overplay all this information it puts it in one area in this remote, isolated ravine. >> why is it seemingly difficult, that's a lot of information there. a lot of research and pin ointing of the maps. why do you suppose it is difficult on a battlefield to really know where something happened and why does it matter the difference between mr. mastriano's findings and your project findings. what does it matter? fveragets this battle had occurred pretty much anywhere else in the argonne, particularly to the south, it would be virtually impossible to pin point it because the ground would be littered with like from 1915 action that occurred in argonne. this was a rear area. in 1915. there was never any fighting so to speak in this area. of course there's a lot of shrapnel and that sort of stuff that was already there when the battle was fought. so really the artifacts we found from world war i were american german artifacts lost during this specific fight on 8 october of 1918. the exact spot is important because if you go with the other version, it totally excuse the interpretation or to a visitor coming there does not get the right interpretation of how the battle was fought. for the relatives, for example, of some of the other members of the patrol, they're known as other 16, it matters to them because when they -- when you go to a battle field where one of your ancestors that was killed or wounded or even fought, it is important to know where that happened. and to see it somewhere else, i don't think is right. >> so there's ban trail dedicated to the mastriano area, the sergeant york discovery expedition, a trail dedicated there. what about to the area you pin pointed. your graup claims is the area. can visitors come there? >> if you know where it is. in fact, the current trail that's there goes very, very close probably within, you know, 200 meters or so of the site. there was no trail, no monuments. that was not the objective of -- that was not dr. nolan or his team's objective was to place monuments and trails and all that sort of stuff. >> you talked about all the artifacts you found. where are they stored? where are they preserved? >> the majority of dr. nolan's artifacts are cure ated by the regional -- curated by the regional archeologist and stored in his warehouse facility in champaign, france. the artifacts like the stuff that was marked g company 328 or 328 or personal items, american items, and some german -- the more important pieces that illustrate this action were a part of a traveling exhibit in the state of tennessee. i'm not sure where it's at. it was in nashville. not sure where it is at right now. >> tennessee is the home state of alvin york? >> yes, it is. >> the back you've contributed to "hero on the western front" discovering alvin york's world war i battle field. what do you hope the book will accomplish? >> well, i hope, number one, it'll get the truth out there and let people see where this really did occur. and of course illustrate the research that was conducted. it was very thuro and this book, clearly, describes every part of that research. >> we've been speaking to brad poles coyne tributor to the book "hero on the western front discovering alvin york's world war i battlefield." thanks so much for being here with us on american history tv. > thank you. >> the c-span bus recently made the long journ

and a half we have heard about nikki haley's resignation as u.s. ambassador to the united nations we'll be covering that more of course throughout the day on al-jazeera and more on the. united nations voice it's quite serious concern about what has happened to the saudi journalist that is well and actually just looking for the town number six trump white house has been fired and. well that'll be updated once it with nikki haley's departure at the end if you have a look back on that if you want as well that's what's trending this tuesday at al-jazeera doc tom. run through some of the other stories making news around the world and zimbabwe's president says a new tax on bank transactions is a painful but necessary measure to revive the economy these are innocent first comments since he imposed the levy which has led to the resurgence of re-emergence i should say of fuel and food shortages some very painful memories for everyday zimbabweans has more from. it's perhaps another signs the economy may take a long time to recover some people have been lining up since saturday developed because the central bank governor says fuel shortages are because of the introduction of a two percent tax on back transactions that means products now cost more and suppliers are buying less it's little shortages and many disappointed customers it's up to a very very disappointing because everything is at a standstill gondolin a business the ground running thing was ripped. the worsening economic crisis is compounded by a critical shortage of cash the last time lines were this long was back in two thousand and eight some people would sleep in their cars for days hoping to get fewer government officials are telling zimbabweans not to panic but some people say they are worried. in some places feel has started arriving but it's still not enough. others are stocking up on groceries these days bread is in short supply and usually doesn't last long on the shelves in some stores customers are limited to two items per person to prevent hoarding and panic buying. stock or next month even before a reversion even corner and produce. behavior persons a change of people uncertain of the future. certainties of. very big pressure inclusions prices a tripled in just a few days it's a question of increasing capacities the question of my future as my featuring more fill of the shelves because it's just a sage in demand. is there some speculation that's causing some panic buying but again these things are under control they will be no shortage. but increasing production needs foreign currency us dollars the banks say they don't have enough of some importers buy dollars on the black market at a premium sums of worry the could be more frustration and hardship before things get better. al-jazeera had. looking at afghanistan and what we often feel is an under reported issue of child casualties there we know about suffering in places like yemen and syria but in afghanistan to millions don't have access to food or basic hygiene and even though countries and aid groups are sending inferred that's only half the battle tony berkeley reports from herat. is seven months old she weighed less than seven kilograms when she entered this camp almost half the weight or what a child her age should be. she is one of a growing number of severely malnourished children who are suffering from lack of food and hunt hygienic living conditions they have fled to camps like these in herat their families are too poor and helpless to survive without outside help a family traveled three hundred fifty kilometers to herat to escape hunger and conflict it's an all too familiar story in afghanistan more than forty percent of children under the age of five have stunted growth through lack of food and poor nutrition and ten percent are wasting away to skin and bones it leaves them prone to illness and disease and sometimes an early death by the end of this year it is estimated that around two million children could suffer from severe malnutrition. the u.s. is the largest food donor here this year it has donated nearly seventy million dollars to support food and nutrition programs but the food lifeline can easily be cut afghanistan always needs more food but the question is how to get it through to the people who really need it the volatile security situation means that one armed group or another has to give agreement with the prize to get through is not always easy but the terrain is difficult often crisscrossing territory controlled by armed factions food and medical convoys are dependent on the permission from these groups no security means no food deliveries. we had to leave our area because there was no food coming stopped it i don't know why. instances of convoys being stopped have reduced in the last few years but they still happen that access is essential for mobile medical teams to help needy civilians aid workers have been attacked and killed in the past and they too need protection from police and i select only a chance to get an economic plan and we can't go everywhere because areas are too prisca and then we can't help children it is uncertain if stopping aid is a deliberate policy of armed groups or it's an inevitable consequence of this long running conflict my call to all the parties to the conflict is give people a break they've really had enough this has been going on for nearly forty years for different reasons but you know there are a lot of people here who know nothing but war and they're yearning for peace and they deserve that unless they sell induction into conflict and improvement in terms of library wants to some odd communities this intuition nothing to do to. become much less. happily not for up son or her wages increased by seven hundred grams in just a week soon she'll no longer be an acutely malnourished baby she doesn't know it yet but hers is a story of hope tony berkeley al-jazeera her at. their u.k. based investigative web site has revealed the real second suspect in the solsbury poisoning case this is a website called belle and cat it says russian military dr alexander michigan traveled to souls were using a different name the russian. sorry lawrence they actually has a report from london here. if people are trying to murder you then perhaps you can take a little satisfaction from the facts that they are officially heroes of the russian federation much of the life of dr alexander michigan was put on display in westminster housing records car insurance documents even the swampy village in the arctic where he grew up all of it providing a body of evidence that he was involved in the assassination attempts on circus cripple this was a man who had claimed he'd abandon attempts to visit souls because the troll because of the snow and slush yet the village he came from is in permafrost most of the year still he rose through specialist medical school spent time on the cover in ukraine and the breakaway republic of trans nesta before being honored it seems by helping to squirrel ousted president viktor yanukovych out of ukraine to exile in russia in two thousand and fourteen but this of course all hinges on the theory that the investigators who came out with it are right where absolutely sure i mean from the photographs we have alone i mean we have we have published all the photographs that would feel some vassal sense but we do have multiple photographs showing him he had two very distinct images on his face and his chin one on the bottom of his cheek his it also has a mark on it is visible in all the photographs russia digital at nasa's of fudge preston as well which is the same person is continues to be a bad time for the g.r.u. intelligence agency having also been found out for trying to hack the o.p.c. w. chemical weapons building in the netherlands it all looks amateurish the british government feels like it is in fight back mode it's not necessarily a huge problem convincing people in russia who want to believe that government any right i think the rest of the world in the global audience i think the evidence of russian involvement is now overwhelming and we've had hundreds of g.r.u. officers named in the past few weeks anyway and if you're trying to run a secret organization if your secret agents are no longer secret then we have a problem of course you my song that it's a shame that colonel. totally chepe go and dr alexander if that's their real names try to present themselves as unhappy tourists called bushy rolf and petroff in salzburg for entirely benign reasons after all to the russian states both men are heroes and circus crippled was a traitor but they can hardly change their story now of course the people will be most pleased about all this the british governments who have always said that the russians did it and can now sit back and relax as everybody else suggests that russian intelligence is just a bit incompetent the russians themselves have always maintained that the british can't provide any evidence but if this isn't proof it's really difficult to know what is lawrence lee al jazeera in london just want to take you through some of the breaking news we have had this hour we saw donald trump in the oval office speaking earlier obviously about mickey had his resignation but there were some other things first of all he said he knows nothing at this point about the disappearance of the saudi journalist jamal khashoggi but that he will be speaking on that he hasn't spoken to the saudi leadership at any point so far but that he will at some point so it's still kind of vague on the situation with jamal khashoggi we had been waiting for something hopefully more concrete from donald trump nothing just there is also talking about issues to do with china and another summit with north korea but it was the woman sitting beside him in the oval office that was the main news of the day u.s. ambassador to the united nations nikki haley who has resigned now. comes as a surprise it was broken on a news website probably about an hour and a half ago in the united states and then they scramble to get this news conference together in the oval office donald trump a said well i kind of knew about this nikki haley had said up to six months ago that she may not want to go beyond two years she will be leaving the post at the end of the year and another thing donald trump apparently said is that he would be looking to name a replacement within three to four weeks so nikki haley not gone yet she's still got a couple of months left in the job but it will be as kimberly how it was saying earlier and joan's by the tough act to follow because she has been so loyal to donald trump and executed the plans that he's wanted in his vision on a world stage so now he haley the united nations ambassador to the united states ambassador to the united states resigning she was also quick to say in this news conference she is not running for the presidency in twenty ten twenty twenty and will still be supporting donald trump for his reelection. know something completely different actually google plus the social network you probably sort of kind of heard of you might have even dabbled with it for a little bit but ultimately you forgot about it well it's been shut down now officially it's because google discovered a security flaw in the platform which exposed the private days are of up to half a million of its users but the fact is google plus has been struggling for years so maybe this is just hastened its demise google plus's for want of a better description. it's just reloading on my i pad here i'm having connectivity prince it's have a look a bit like facebook not as much of a communication tool more of a sharing and this is the al jazeera english google plus page and content is constantly being updated and posted there but even we would have to admit let me see their follow is who they didn't zoom in very well but anyway the photo was there two point six million nothing compared to the eleven and a half million that we have found is the writing was on facebook so where did it all go wrong is it all just about this bug this floor well there's a lot more to the story actually less in spain well go found the bug in the google plus social network back in march and promptly fixed up the tech firm decided to keep things quiet for months google plus was shut down but the only consumer version and enterprise version will still exist according to a report by the wall street journal now everyone with a g. mail or google account automatically has a g. plus account but the company admits that it doesn't know which accounts were actually impacted and estimates that up to five hundred thousand google plus accounts were potentially affected and google says the link data only concerns profile fields like the name the e-mail address occupation gender and also age and the company is going to implement small controls of the g. mail and on how third party apps collect user data on android the decision to keep things quiet though. is because google thinks that it didn't appear that anyone had access to the user information in a blog post the company says there was no evidence that outside developers were aware of the security flaw or indication that any user profiles what touched. claims it is shutting down now because of major challenges they're facing with maintaining their social network for example low usage but some have reacted to the announcement online this users posted a cartoon with th

g. b. and g. b. where we're up for a fight fighting talk there from sammy wilson now by one single independent unionist all of northern ireland same piece sitting in the commons are democratic unionists this is because it has been a long standing tradition of northern ireland second largest partition fain to abstain from sitting at westminster despite the election of seven m.p.'s however there is no such part of them taking their seats in the door island dublin or in the european parliament city earlier this year to alex she'd been leader made aliya mcdonald explain their stance an abstention isn't westminster either push to ireland in europe it's a new leadership in theory and when you look at the the strong influence the decisive position of the democratic unionist reformer one hundred full of m.p.'s not having the house of commons are you tempted to profess to abstentions policy and make up a forty into the parcel westminster and upset the back so awful can't know we don't take our seats we continue in that transition because for us irish political decisions are to be made rightfully in our in and for irish people thirty years of troubles twenty years of peace but of course a but it's a process which some people believe is a fundamental danger to the peace process. how do you evaluate. bragg's and the good friday agreement are mutually incompatible you cannot have brags that you cannot have a forcing of the north of ireland of the european union on the one hand and still claim to honor in word and spares and lesser the good friday agreement is in our view as stark as the last and i listened to theresa may and i listened to others from the english tories saying. don't worry about the border in ireland ireland will be fine on the one hand and then insisting that britain will leave the customs union leave to single marcus and so on and of course the reality is that those two positions are completely as odds with each other i think the tories have played a very dangerous game no way can our and or should darren and or will argument be the collateral damage in the midst of all of the us. the idea of reimposing a border on the island is not just economically disruptive it's potentially jeopardizes the entire political infrastructure of the good friday agreement the executive itself in the north the assembly the northern institutions are built on our premised on the notion of european standards and regulations and lol so this is a big problem for us bragg's this is a disaster and i would not say that the do you. have what i what i would understand are considered to be a position of huge strengths i think they they find themselves as a particular moment in time with a particular mathematical relationship don't get me wrong i think this confidence and supply arrangement between the tories and the day is. is wrong i think it absolutely compromises the british government's claims to impartiality or independence i think is highly problematic from that point of view it's one of the of the political consequences of bricks that this provision of course or from the peace accords for a referendum or my own under certain circumstances and i wish unity is it your opinion the blood makes such a referendum very likely or indeed inevitable at some stage i think it demonstrated very clearly just how vulnerable the north of ireland is in the within the union because let's face it the people in the north voted to stay and yet that could be totally disregards and i know for rules a scenario where investment into arlen's the economic activity right across the island people born on the island of ireland. who take for granted the fact that they can do simple things like travel throughout europe like europe is people's hinterland now people have grown up with the. access for education for work and so on but even unionist politicians of advising people who cares are a fiver as well precisely precisely because these are things that people value i wouldn't go so far as to say that it makes irish unity inevitable but i certainly think it underscores the common sense of the united are and the common sense of actually managing our own political affairs and not allowing other forces beyond you to actually overrule and override decisions democratic decisions made by the people i think that it sets that are very clearly i was speaking to mary lou mcdonald in dublin earlier this year but this week she was buck in front of the house of commons delivering a press briefing after a meeting with the prime minister she turned to the subject that one unintended consequence of or no deal bret's that could be to provoke conditions for the poor an irish unity in northern ireland after say theresa may took her fees really to say nothing terribly new. i think it's worth remembering that. from the outset when the article fifty process was triggered and when the negotiations started everybody accepted including the british government that there was a particular case to be bait for ireland that there is a particular. the border about the entrusts of our island north and south and that there was a common and shared to objective to protect the good friday agreement and all of its parts to avoid any hardening of the border and to ensure no to me a new of citizens' rights mrs may for that i'm very high on happy to record that since that time the british government have rolled back on those commitments and we can only surmise that passes on the say so of the d u p a parsi who do not represent our right to kill a did you of the majority of people in the north of ireland who voted to remain so we've heard this evening at mrs may talk about a temporary backstop a temporary answer that we need to be absolutely clear that breaks this itself is not a transitory events the consequences of us will be long. and will be deep and so the backstop arrangement the answers to the questions for ireland have to be ensuring the idea of a time bind or a temporary little arrangement simply will not cut the mustard and if mrs may hitches her wagon to the most extreme brags to tears including the d u p i think this history will judge her very badly we're now at crunch time these are times of history these are times of big decision and it would not be acceptable for mrs may to act purely for political expediency whether that's to hold her goal from and to her party to gather what your. right now from here is big leadership at long term leadership she has to do the right thing by our unions and nothing short of cash will suffice and let me also say this too to those of a unionist persuasion who perhaps mice wish for a hard bragg's us end to misguided belief that that somehow resolves the issue of the border in ireland let me say this if there is a crash if there is a hard spraggs us what then there will be an immediate demand for a referendum and i appreciate and i see it would not be. in any way except of a that all of the damage of a hard break be visited on the islands of ireland and for the british government to accept ireland north and south to simply take that on the chin and be philosophical about it so if there is a section of unionism and i've heard this articulation very irresponsibly by some who believe that actually are hard breaks this is a good day out for the union i would say to them think again think long and the thing current is clear but both should say in under do you mean business in terms of this blacks that struggle so join us after the break in the latest thinking from the democrat unionist party i think scuppered last week's don't leave. anything in which they appear to settle. in a world of big partisan. laws and conspiracies it's time. to dig deeper to hit the stories. that mainstream media refuses to tell more than ever we need to be smarter we need to stop slamming the door on the bad shouting past each other it's time for critical thinking it's time to fight for the middle for the truth the time is now for watching closely watching the hawks. welcome to max keiser financial survival guide. looking forward to your pension account. yes this is what happens to pensions in britain delegates. watch kaiser report. it's. truly job to. welcome back after the dramatic intervention of the g.d.p. last week threatening if necessary to vote in the government's budget next month the full at the weekend to confuse. and threatened resignations and not just in the usual breakfast suspects but from some peta slick considered loyal to the prime minister in a statement on monday theresa may tried to buy time still under pressure from all sides but in particular from the d p a which she confirmed it single market customs union the u.k. leaving the e.u. together with new park high you've got off either in the single market or customs union differences here the u.k. leaves the united kingdom but when the u.k. leaves the european union it will be the u.k. that leaves the european union we will be leaving the european union together i'm very clear there should be no hard border between northern ireland and island but as we've put forward proposals we can deliver on that and maintain the integrity of our union and of course what we're looking at in relation to the and we made that very clear when the european union made their proposal that would effectively have carved northern ireland away from the rest of the united kingdom in their backstop proposal it's precisely because we cannot accept their backstop to a backstop because they continue to want to work to want to see that in fact what we want to see in a backstop is a situation where northern ireland businesses can both export freely to the great britain and to the european union actually that would be a good position for all the northern ireland this is alex spoke to senior d.p.m. ph and shannon to have his assessment on whether the crisis has passed for nag. can i take you back to last december when the democratic unionist. the prime minister of the dangers of the so-called. do you believe the. disappointment we are where we are because we felt that. we had made our position very very clear unfortunately we have had a lot of. discussions with rumors and. allegations and stories but things been pretty clear this week has been a difficult week this week probably will be the culmination of where we are we're not happy with where the direction that the prime minister is indicating. and we're very clear we are that we. want to be treating. everybody else. you would be prepared to withdraw support from the. political to. be dead and the agricultural. leader we met last week we. on the agricultural. we were against the bell as such but because we need the government and we didn't tell them in advance we were very clear that we are prepared to push. in the wrong direction. but. told us last week. to get. well i would suggest to the prime minister that. with. the rest of the. we only have one option and not one option unfortunately it's not the one i want to see. as a whole despite the opposition. the other. i'm not represented in the house of commons either because. the. position does not give you a response ability to represent all of the opinion of. not just be position which was only supported by a minority a sizeable minority but still a minority. and. because of a strong. community a. majority of. that vote. but remember that as. the. regional vote. there for the taken. and. so how do we how do we move forward some of my colleagues and some of my friends would be of the opinion that we should be trying to get a deal with the e.u. that's what i want the prime minister to my party leader. here are. to do but if we can't get them we have to look at the consequences that. can bring a conclusion successful conclusion. and those talks can finally. streets . if you did a boat that is that they believe you wouldn't kinds of the general election and the potential to make government for use be known to be on the left if you have. to buy the thing but for many of your colleagues that would be the end is that the reason why the government up until now has been complacent about the attitude of the democratic unionist. i'm not sure. how government got themselves in a box of their own. but as i said to someone they were not afraid of elections. we take our money get to the people and we let the people decide better if there was an election to be honest i don't think it's. from either side with a few exceptions to that i certainly don't have any wish to see jeremy carbon and the position of our prime minister or government whatever it may be i believe the prime minister at this moment if he looks at where she is on course. and carefully and in cooperation with the i think we can find a way forward but she's got to respect this. he's got a. job thank you very much i came in with a thank you. to provide an analysis of the week where island has once again dominated the bracks. alex spoke to john tong professor of british and irish politics at the university of john welcome back to the. pleasure. some people because it surprised by the the vehemence both the democratic unionist party state the position of the. last week in this program last week or even nigel dog in the in the commons with the prime minister on monday what lies behind strong statement of position. i don't think we should be surprised that the u.p.a. has always been an anti european union party and that the u.p.a. is always believe that northern ireland must be an integral part of the united kingdom in constitutional and economic terms of course that the pisa ports divergence in other respects on issues like same sex marriage and abortion but in constitutional terms that the u.p.a. fears that anything that aligns northern ireland more closely with the e.u. and in this case the republic of ireland given what's proposed in respect to the border that's the slippery slope to united ireland than the d u p as the hard line eunice party that it is will not countenance anything like that despite the fact that northern ireland voted as a whole in favor of remaining they do you don't seem to have tempered the policy against the european union at all nor do they seem frightened of another general election certainly not fright of an election because the have medically sealed boxes the northern islands ethnic blocs that the u.p.a. will still be top dog amongst yunis if there was to be a general election tomorrow that the e.p. would probably return with ten seats possibly eleven seats so the piece and don't feel the general election secondly the outcome of a general election may well be a hung parliament again so the d.p. could potentially still have influence certainly the conservatives with the largest party and the d.p. are bluffing when they say they will vote things down or like a budget conservative budget i think that's part of the reason that treat them a won't conclude any sort of agreement with the anyway given that cannot get its budget through the house of commons is frankly a government power lies you can't do anything you can't approve any expenditure you can't even approve payments the european union that will form part of the divorce settlement so the d.p.s. position is very very very important indeed the only way they could be bypassed would be of treason may could come up with a leave package that attracted the support of labor and. he's on the opposite side there was up a moment just a moment in the prime minister's statement last monday where she seemed to suggest to be that they could actually end up in a preferential position to the rest of the united kingdom with full free trade with the u.k. market and preferential access to the european market but that's not something even a preferential position that they do you get interested in northern ireland could actually enjoy a boom time if the d.p. would relent on this position but the d.p. have this almost paranoid fear which you know admittedly is partly a consequence of the legacy of the troubles that they are being you know the deeds of trans fair. been placed upon them to force them ever closer to the outer public and eventually united ireland that they're being shipped out of the united kingdom goes down the road that she has tentatively proposed and certainly hinted at tonight on dogs in a statement last monday so if you're thinking about this jewel alliance developing between the scottish conservatives and the democratic unionist party would it be fair to say that the scottish conserves and the do you have in common that they will never never never accept economic profound because they feel the political consequences to the union. yes constitutional politics from everything else for both of those parties the d. u. p. talks about northern ireland's position in the united kingdom being threatened on an almost daily basis davidson says she never wants to hear anything more about an independence referendum but she daily talks about constitutional politics and has tried to mobilize the anti independence vote behind her party thinking about the developments or lack of them from a fein perspective that the second largest party in northern ireland the third largest party in the public of people in shouldn't fear in a poll jealous that the influence that the do you have at westminster which they can never have a substantial this party or do they think that the way things are the slog might work to the benefit of their ambitions for a united ireland. chivvied been hugely critical of the d.p. relationship with the conservatives at westminster they argue it's a partisan relationship which isn't any good for the people northerners or as a whole and it's to the detriment of the nationalist community yes there have been voices that have said why don't the shin fein why don't you take your seats at westminster your your seven seats to which you're entitled on the basis of sheen feigns mandate but it's too big a step for him for him to swear an oath of allegiance to a british monarch it will be very hypocritical of him fain to do that it would also be very divisive within shin fein you need a two thirds majority within the party for them to take their seats so it certainly isn't going to happen in the short and medium terms if it ever happens professor john tong thank you very much indeed my pleasure. in the run up to last christmas to resume a thought she had clocked the first phase of the blacks at the goal she actions only to be pulled up short by a flag of convenience friends in the d.c.u. be in the said that she ignored the advice of all of them blacks are said to david davis by keeping our allies out of the loop until the very last minute the ghost of christmas past let the prime minister off of a humiliating delay a warning and some big u.s. words on the backstop. it seems unlikely that the ghost of christmas present will let off so lightly the images presented to the prime minister for this winter are not appealing there is no commons majority for the checkers fudge or anything that resembles that the only way to avoid the unpalatable choice between an eye this border and an eye they see barbara is to stand the single market and the customs union ironically the may be a parliamentary majority for the us but it would split the conservative party asunder meanwhile to pursue a basic trade deal of color the plus might itself good though to defeat in the commons and it would represent the final political humiliation of facing defeat on someone else's policy conservative m.p.'s
