health officials have sent a letter home to parents of students here at g.w. elementary school. three students from the same class at george washington elementary have scarlet fever. they say it is a common infection that is spread from person to person by sneezing or coughing. school officials are taking spreading to more students. they will be disinfecting all surfaces and hand rails. representatives from the city health department will be at the school today to answer questions from parents who have any concern. parents are asked to monitor children for symptoms of scarlet fever, which includes a sand-paper-like rash, high fever, sore throat, and swollen neck glands. if your child has any of those symptoms, you are asked to call your doctor immediately. and keep your child at home. scarlet fever can be treated with antibiotics. but if it's not, it could lead to rheumatic fever or kidney disease in extremely severe cases. parents of infected children are asked to stay home and call their doctor. health officials will be on hand today. jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> p
