g.w. parkway this time yesterday. two people are in critical condition after a tour bus if it weren't for the action of the good samaritans that happened to be there on the isolated stretch of roadway the death toll could have been higher. northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg live at the scene. what have you learned is that what do we know at this hour? jeff: one thing that is interesting here it does remain a mystery here as to who the good samaritans are. the u.s. park police say it is following up on the leads to determine the identity of the individuals. today officials tell me they are trying to identify whether or not the individuals are members of the military based at the base. because it's believed they are military members. this crash took place a mile from where i'm standing now. which is a mile north of the entrance to mount vernon. this all happened just more than 24 hours ago. mid-size tour bus collided with a passenger car heading south. the bus was carrying 18 passenger and a drive from china.

g.w. parkway. the spot it happened is a mile away to the entrance of mount vernon. you can see the pieces of debris from the crash on the ground by the site. as well as a large tire track. an the bus went off the road. mid-size tour bus north on the parkway collided collided with a passenger car headed southbound. the bus carried 18 parms and a drive all -- passengers and a driver all from china. the bus tipped over on the left side. witnesses say six to 20 passerbys, possibly military members stopped at the scene and lifted the bus back to the wheels and administered aid to victims until emergency personnel arrive. park police say the heroic actions undoubtedly helped the safety of those injured. >> to have people participate like that is great. >> i'm proud of them. they should have. i would expect it. >> the u.s. park police are still following up on leads to hidefy the heroic individual -- to identify the heroic individuals. we did get in touch with public affairs officer and they are or not the individuals who were heroic are based at the base. a big question i
