cnn's gabby orr is part of the team breaking this new reporting. walk us through what happened and how, really, this has been building for months. >> well, victor, i want to start with that june 3rd meeting that you just referenced, and let's pull up this timeline that breaks this down, step by step, because that meeting is when we know this subpoena was delivered, and in that meeting, between trump attorneys and federal investigators, they were brought down to a basement facility at mar-a-lago. they were shown boxes of documents that were being kept there, and at the conclusion of that meeting on june 3rd, they left with documents that we are told were marked with "top secret" markings or higher classification. june 8th, trump's team received a letter from federal investigators asking them to do more to secure the facility where those documents were being hold and to preserve them, presumably because they wanted to retrieve those at a later point. and if you go back to that period between june and august of this year, on monday, when that raid hap

let's go to gabby now. walk us through the broader story here. what led up to this execution of the warrant at mar-a-lago. >> reporter: well, victor, there's a helpful timeline that breaks this down, and if you can believe it, this actually goes back to may of 2021 when the national archives and records administration first reached out to former president donald trump about records from the white house that they believed were being kept either knowingly or unknowingly at his mar-a-lago residence. fast forward to earlier this year, after conversations between trump attorneys and archives officials, there was a moment when archives officials went to mar-a-lago and left with 15 boxes, later announcing that some of the documents that they carried away from his residence actually did contain classified information. now, from that period to this summer, this investigation that archives had asked doj to begin was sort of slow burning. there wasn't much movement on it. that ended in june of this year. that is when donald trump's attorneys met with counte

cnn's gabby orr, part of the reporting team that broke that part of the story, gabby, why don't you bring us up to speed on what exactly we're talking about with these documents. >>> well, good morning, john and brianna. what we know, based on our sources that in early june of this year, there was a meeting that occurred at mar-a-lago between attorneys representing former president donald trump and agents there, looking to see if there was classified information being stored on the property. and it's this meeting that sort of precipitated the search that was executed at donald trump's residence in palm beach yesterday. we're told from sources who were present at the meeting that at the time that attorneys for donald trump shared documents, turned them over and showed them that there were in fact documents being held at mar-a-lago that had classified markings on them. the agents who were present then asked to see where these documents were being stored. they were taken to a basement room on the property, we're told. and just days after that meeting occurred, they were given -- they were se

gabby orr joins us now with the latest on this. gabby? >> brianna, we're learning that former president donald trump is being urged by some of his allies to release the cctv surveillance footage from the day that the fbi searched his mar-a-lago residence. now, some of his allies have argued that releasing this footage could give him a leg up in a republican primary. we're told that some have even discussed including it in campaign-style ads. they feel that this would offer trump's supporters a visual that would assist his claims that he's been facing political persecution, showing, you know, fbi agents descending on mar-a-lago. but others have told us that this is not a good idea. that this could backfire and that in the first place the trump team and the former president himself were actually asked to turn those security cameras off when this search occurred and refused to do so. i want to read to you what one person close to former president trump told us when we asked do you think that this is a good idea? should he release these tapes

cnn's gabby orr has the details. gabby, what is trump saying now? president just moments ago took to truth social, his own social media platform to complain about this affidavit calling it heavily redacted and repeating arguments that he has made previously about the way that this fbi search at mar-a-lago was conducted. he calls this a break-in of my home. he goes after the judge, bruce reinhart, who arrived the search warrant in the first place. and he also criticizes both the fbi and the doj. this is a similar tactic that he has used since we first learned that the fbi conducted a search at mar-a-lago, repeatedly trying to discredit the basis of this search, claiming that he declassified presidential records that were taken from the white house to his mar-a-lago property at the end of his presidency and that there was no reason for the search to occur. he says at one point in this post, quote, we gave them much. so the president -- former president again trying to portray himself as entirely cooperative with both national archives officials and fe

gabby, you have some new reporting, i'm told, on what this could mean for trump's political ambitions. what can you tell us? >> wolf, we know that former president trump was vacillating between an announcement of a 2024 presidential campaign in july of this year or later this fall, either before or immediately after the midterm elections. what our sources are telling us now however is that timeline has been pushed up or at least trump is being encouraged to push up that timeline by his allies on capitol hill and also a number of his political advisers who feel like this moment is ripe for him to capitalize on frustration among republicans with what they believe is political persecution. we have seen them a number of republicans, both on capitol hill and in former president trump's orbit, describe this as extraordinary overreach by the justice department, and as political persecution, and they're privately encouraging trump to move up his 2024 campaign announcement and do it sooner rather than later. my colleague melanie zanona was told one senior house republican actually spoke with t
