gabe gutierrez is there live with more for us. do they know why?s going on. >> reporter: hi kate, good afternoon. that is the big question right now. this call center has gotten 13 overdose calls so far today. we don't know how many are fentanyl or heroin related but during a 32-hour period last week 52 overdose calls. now, this has been -- the numbers are stragerring, as you mentioned the numbers jumped up from 26 fentanyl related deaths in jefferson in 2015. that jump up to 139 in 2016. and a total of 695 overdose calls in january. that's averaging 22 calls a day. i'm joined by jody, the director of emergency services here in jefferson county. what are you attributing this spike to here in louisville? >> we don't know yet. we are doing a lot of work to see what that is a. few years ago we did a big push to get prescription opioids off the street. that was a very dig success. now we are suffering from people need something, they are going after the heroin. it's cheap, it's easy to find. >> reporter: it's becoming routine right now. we spoke with a

nbc's gabe gutierrez has more from louisville, kentucky. >> reporter: on the front lines of louisville's heroin crisis is paramedic chris locketts. >> we've definitely seen an increase in overdoses. >> he's barely breathing. >> reporter: in just 32 hours last week, jefferson county got 52 overdose calls, many caused by a dangerous mix of heroin and fentanyl. police say one person who had been using heroin died while riding in a car that crashed. fentanyl-related deaths alone in the county jumped from 26 in 2015, to 139 in last year. total overdose calls spiked to 695 in january, an average of 22 a day. >> i came on shift at 7:00 a.m. i saw my first heroin overdose nine minutes later. >> reporter: dr. robert couch at norton autobahn hospital's e.r. told us of a recent fentanyl-laced batch of heroin the patients called the pallbearer. >> users are looking for the strongest high they can get. >> reporter: adding to the crisis, the cost of some version to an antidose for overdose is skyrocketing. the list price spiked 600%, $4,500 for a two-pack. the company says it offers numerous discounts
