gabe gutierrez joins me now from the phone. what exactly can you tell us? what happened? >> reporter: hi, there, katy. officer aaron dean publicly identified for the first time, police chief in fort worth said that he tendered his resignation this morning. the officer did before he met with the chief. the chief also said that if the officer hadn't done that, he would have been fired anyway. there are currently two investigations ongoing into this case. the internal affairs investigation and a major case unit investigation. now, aaron dean, that officer, he was hired by the police department in august of 2017. and he was licensed as a peace officer in april of 2018. that's last year. he could potentially face criminal charges. now, katy, we were following this story. this is the case that broke over the weekend over in fort worth, texas. there was a shooting. it was captured on body camera footage. a neighbor late friday night had called for a welfare check because he noticed the house next door, the door was open. the lights were on. he called to a nonemergency number. se

. >> joining me now from texas, nbc news correspondent gabe gutierrez.? >> reporter: hey, there, katie. a lot of frustration here. emotions are still raw. we are learning for the first time some new details about what happened in the moments leading up to that shooting. police have released that arrest warrant for that officer charged with murder. i'll read from that arrest warrant. it says that the 8-year-old boy that was inside that home, the nephew that atatiana jefferson was baby sitting, she told the detective that he and jefferson were playing video games in the back bedroom. jefferson told the 8-year-old she heard noises coming from outside and she took her handgun from her purse and the 8-year-old boy said jefferson raised her handgun, pointed it toward the window, then jefferson was shot and fell to the ground. this is the first time we're hearing directly from the 8-year-old boy through investigators about what he saw, just incredibly tragic an 8-year-old boy had to witness this, but that boy said that jefferson pointed the gun at the window. n

he's now out on $200,000 bond, craig. >> gabe, two things.hat happens next, and during that news conference that just wrapped up, before it became emotional, did we get anymore insight into how it all happened on saturday, any additional explanation as to how something like this could happen? >> yesterday the mayor of ft. worth apologized directly to the victim's family saying this was unacceptable. a few moments ago the police chief echoed those sentiments. he did say the officers responding to the call on saturday, that they didn't think they were responding to a welfare check call as has been previously described before, the way they saw it was an open structure call. still, there are a lot of questions about why they didn't follow -- why they didn't follow procedure, did something else, al left the -- knock on the door, perhaps alert people inside the home, that they were a police officer. in this case police say officer dean did not identify himself as a police officer and, in fact, opened fire just seconds after drawing his weapon. now,
