gabe gutierrez outside pfizer headquarters there in new york city. now to someone who knows a whole lot about all of it. the director of the national institutes of health, dr. francis collins. dr. collins, honored to be one of your last interviews. let's start with pfizer applying to get that emergency use authorization from the fda for children between 5 and 11. give us a realistic timeline for getting that approved and how optimistic are you that we'll seat shots in those little arms before thanksgiving? >> well, the data i've seen looks pretty encouraging. they tested this in over 2,000 kids in that age range from 5 to 11. they looked see what kind of antibodies would be generated by this one-third strength dose. they didn't want to give the full strength, because these are littler people. and it looked very good. antibody dose in an 8-year-old with a one-third dose is what you would see in a 25-year-old with a full dose. and the side effects are pretty much what you'd expect, a sore arm. let's see what the fda advisory committee has to say about

joining us now are nbc news gabe guttierez live outside the pfizer headquarters in new york.the obama white house. so gabe, we'll start but. the return to school obviously made a big impact on the covid numbers. but pfizer executives i understand think that their vaccine can help turn the tide. >> reporter: well, that is the hope. and the good news is that overall new covid cases and hospitalizations have dropped significantly across much of the country, you know, among documents. but troubling numbers among children now making up 1 in 4 infections. the thinking has been that children are not necessarily as severely impacted by the virus as are older adults and immunocompromised people. but the fact is that they can still spread the virus. and so the concern was as school opened up that, you know, it could contribute to another wave of this pandemic. pfizer is hoping that perhaps later this month and next month that their vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 will be authorized for emergency use. and as you mentioned, this fda advisory panel is now set to meet on october 26. afte

joining me now, live from colombia, nbc news correspondent, gabe gutierrez. gabe, good morning.> hey, there, jose. as you can see behind me, as you mentioned, there are thousands of migrants here and there's a good number in this stretch here. we're here at the beach of this tourist town that has now been overrun in some ways by migrants and my colleague can pan around. we're in tight corners here, so we can't move around too much, but these are migrants who have gathered here after buying tickets weeks ago. they are now hoping to get on boats to head over the board into panama. you mentioned the daring gap, that's that very dangerous stretch of jungle and we've been speaking with these migrants and they are desperate enough to try to make that trek. this has been a long journey. some of these migrants have been here for weeks, trying to get to central america en route to the u.s. some of them have told me that, you know, they have paid thousands of dollars to try to get to this point. there was one man we just spoke to in line, who left haiti just a few weeks ago, after the ear
