gabe, what is happening tonight? what are they telling you? >> reporter: well, look, laura, over the past 24 hours, i've asked so many of these workers how long they think they can strike like this. and the answer that i keep getting over and over is as long as it takes. look, they point to the ceo salaries for the big three automakers, each making more than $20 million a year, plus those massive, even record profits that those companies have been enjoying. and they're telling me they want a bigger piece of that pie. look, the 13,000 or so workers who are now on strike between this ohio facility, one in michigan, and one in missouri are now making just $100 a day in strike pay. each of them paid by the union because they're not making a salary right now. but they were told to be prepared for this moment, and that's what many of them told me they have been doing for months, even years, some of them, knowing that this moment was coming. so as you can hear, the energy level tonight, day one, is still extremely high. this chanting and cheering. bu

all right, gabe cohen, thank you so much. in toledo. >>> let's talk more about all of this, nathan bony is with us, a business reporter for axios who has been covering the auto industry for ten years now, and also the author of the book "detroit resurrected to bankruptcy and back." nathan, great to see you, so you just heard gabe reporting here, strikers say 80% of their demands are not being met. does that say to you that this is going to be a very lengthy strike? >> i do think it will be. this is a wide gap. you've got the uaw wanting a wage increase of about 36% right now. ford and "gma" have offered 20%. that's a 16-point gap. the funny thing is i think that's where they're the closest. where they're the furthest away is on benefits because the uaw wants a return to traditional pensions and retiree health care. and the automakers say that is absolutely not going to fly. >> and then you hear from auto, the automakers who are saying, and the companies are saying, we can't afford to pay everybody 40% increases over a certain

i want to go to gabe, a great travel expert, a good help when it comes to the crowds. first to the flying. people are committing themselves to do it in record numbers. we hear of a lot of delays. so far, relevantly good. what do you make of that? >> yeah, listen, there's optimism towards labor day weekend. we know it will be packed this afternoon. i have a flight at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow, saturday. so i'm trying to avoid that bump in traffic that we expect saturday. sunday should be easy. listen, the summer started off in a rough fashion. by may, june, july, things were more stable. it was busy out there, neil. most folks traveling internationally. as we head to labor day weekend, things will remain smoothly. the airlines have handled it better now compared to last year. people trying to get in one last vacation before we say good-bye to summer 2023. >> neil: there's a lot of attention about pilots, whether we had enough of them and then this study that shows 5,000 are hiding medical conditions from the public. i thought what if a good many of them couldn't fly. we had a

joining me now to explain, gabe gutierrez. nbc news correspondent, gray jay, cnbc correspondent covering the auto industry, phil lebeau. all three are in wayne, michigan. we also have peter baker with us. gabe, i'm going to begin with you. >> we're here outside of a plant in wayne, michigan. the president going to a gm plant nearby. i can tell you that union workers who he was speaking with this morning were very grateful to see the president coming to michigan. he's one they hoped he would come here a little sooner. and that really shows the complicated nature of this. you see the video there. sean fayne standing shoulder to shoulder with the president and the president literally with a bull horn talking about solidarity with union workers. this is a shift from just a few days ago and the white house is trying to walk this fine line, trying not to antagonize the auto companies in their negotiations with the uaw but in the last few days after that invitation to come to michigan by fayne, we've noticed a shift and the president

gabe cohen in toledo, thank you so much. let's talk with tammy kim, a contributing writer at "the new yorker." she's been covering the industry for quite some time now. tammy, that's pretty significant to hear about the ripple effect. already ford is going to be laying off people. is that a direct consequence to this striking? >> yes, certainly this is something that the union is weighing. i think that's behind the strategy of the rolling strikes, where you have just the starter strikes at the three facilities. these are, of course, assembly plants, not manufacturing plants. but with every kink in the supply chain as we saw in the pandemic, that leads to delays in shipments. i think the union is sort of preparing this, waging their bets around having the support of the public, not disrupting the supply chain more than it needs to. >> as gabe was saying there that 80% of the strikers' demands are not being met, according to representatives of the union there, so do you think the two sides will be able to find some common grou

gabe, what's the situation there now?lf, i can tell you the union and the big three automakers are going to be heading back to the bargaining table tomorrow. there were no talks today, although we did hear from the union that they say they have put a counteroffer in front of all three of those automakers. they are now waiting for a response, and we expect to learn more on that tomorrow, but until that deal is reached, we're going to see more scenes like the one here in toledo, the factory shut down, picket lines at every gate entering this building. this is a stellantis plant where usually they would be making more than 1,000 jeans every day. not right now. that process is frozen, and this is just one of three factories that are part of this tactical strike there. he's this. there's a ford plant in michigan as well as a general motors plant in missouri, but what we are likely to see in the coming days, what's really already happening, is additional factories that have to stop their own operation or even lay off workers be

gabe, any response from the white house? >> reporter: yeah, jose.ouse announced that it's sending 800 new military personnel down to the border to help with these efforts. the white house also saying that it's expanding dhs facilities to be able to handle more than 3,200 extra migrants. the white house also facing questions from republicans who said that it's the president's lax border policies that have led to this. i asked white house press secretary specifically whether the white house which took credit for the drop of border crossings will it now take responsibility for the rise in border crossings now. listen to her response. >> the president has taken action to try to deal with what's happening at the border, historic action without the help of congress. you see it for yourself what congress has tried to do, put forth a piece of legislation, a c.r. that does the opposite of what we're trying to do. we're trying to fight fentanyl, deal with smugglers, put more legal enforcement at the border. they're trying to reverse that. >> reporter: that's
