gabe, this 11:00 a.m. war cabinet meeting will be something we're watching closely. we understand israel's full cabinet meets at 1:00 p.m. eastern. the next few hours could bring huge developments. what do we know about the white house's role in these talks? >> well, certainly, the white house has been involved in these talks with -- including with qatar over the last few weeks. and, you know, national security council spokesman john kirby said yesterday this has been a very -- an hour by hour involvement from the white house trying to secure the release of these hostages as the pressure really has mounted around the world for more information. but the white house has been very involved in this, yesterday president biden was asked whether he believed that a hostage deal was near and he said i believe so. and he held up his fingers and crossed his fingers hoping that this could happen at any time. we also understand from a former official, former administration official that, you know, there was some potential that this deal could have been announced several days ago.

gabe, tell the viewers, you left a job at the white house.run for office. when people had a question to you to make that move, what did you tell them? >> well, it started with my parents. they said that you are doing what? you are as special assistant to the president. mayors across the country have yourself a number, and you want to come home, a place that i really had never left, but do the hard work of asking people for their support, asking people for their votes. the reason i was so committed to it is because i did also have great belief from lots of those same people. my parents, friends, they said there's no one better for this. you understand the state, you have our values. you should go out there or try to get the votes. it was hard, but we have a great belief in ourselves. >> president obama called you and offer his congratulations on your win. you've got to the experience, gabe. you worked in a white house, you forked in two administrations. how much of that experience is going to be able to translate when you go to capitol hill, a

gabe cohen joins us live from freedom plaza in washington, d.c. gabe, tell us what's happening. >> reporter: i have to admit, i can't hear you particularly well. the crowd has grown rapidly here in the last few minutes. you can see here freedom plaza now filled with these protesters. it even extends out into the streets behind me, shutting down several blocks here in washington, d.c. we just heard the speaker say there are buses that haven't been able to get into this area with even more people who are coming. we expect this crowd is going to grow even more. organizers said it would be the largest free palestine rally in u.s. history. that remains to be seen. we are going to see speeches starting in the next few minutes until 4:00 p.m. eastern. then demonstrators are going to march to the white house, where they're going to demonstrate there. what we expect to hear in these speeches is more political pressure on president biden to call for a ceasefire and break that unequivocal support that he and u.s. leaders have offered israel up to this point.

joining us now, gabe gutierrez. good morning. what happened last night? >> reporter: hi there, jose. good morning. this protest escalated very quickly and as you said, one person arrested, but six officers injured according to capitol police. and this morning they're releasing new details about what exactly happened. the organizers here outside of the dnc say they were here as part of a peaceful protest, a candlelight vigil trying to draw attention and calling for a cease-fire. however, capitol police say that it went well beyond that, that this protest was not peaceful and they tried to step in to protect the people inside. last night there were democratic representatives, as well as candidates here, at a campaign reception. and the chanting escalated in turn into violence when protesters clashed with police. police say at least six officers were injured. that the person that was charged actually punched one of these officers in the face. and we asked organizers here, they were blocking entrances to this building, why did they do that? they claim they we

joining us director for fix the court gabe roth is back.senator, i start with you. i wonder, i want to start with tuesday night. i worked in politics. and when i worked in politics, i was always pretty skeptical of the polls, sometimes to the pollsters' chagrin. but i feel like this issue of reproductive health care is about reproductive health care. it is also about the court. and i wonder how you saw tuesday night's results? >> well, first of all, i think tuesday night's results were an incredibly powerful public statement by the american people across the country in multiple elections that thanks, we do not appreciate having rights we've enjoyed for a generation taken away from us. so that's the baseline. then you throw in the court that did it, and it begins to smell a little rotten because of all of the machinations around the court of the far right-wing billionaires and how that decision among many others looks a lot like it has been delivered by the court for big donors who helped put the justices who delivered it on the court. >> yo

gabe, this was quite unusual.ere some congress members, including hakeem jeffries, other members of leadership trapped inside. tell us what they are saying and what the police are saying today. >> reporter: good afternoon. we just spoke with congressman brad sherman. he was inside and had to be evacuated. police barricades are still up this morning. there are two different perspectives on what happened here last night. there were democratic representatives and candidates here for a campaign reception when they were interrupted by chanting. demonstrators say they were here peacefully for a candlelight vigil trying to draw attention to what they want to see in the israel/hamas war, a cease-fire. the police say that this escalated. it turned into a violent gathering. one person was arrested and charged for punching a police officer in the face. the demonstrators say that it was the police that escalated the situation. still, things got very tense. six officers were injured, according to capitol police. demonstrators

host: gabe, what can congress do here?s impose an ethics code on the supreme court if they deem this one to be insufficient? guest: i think congress does have a role to play and i think moving forward with the senate judiciary ethics and transparency act would be helpful. that bill does say it needs to have an ethics code, but the bill continues in the seven other sections that's as part of being ethical is tightening up the refusal -- the recusal whirls. -- rules. expanding it so you are in organization or individual and have spent millions of dollars pushing for a judicial confirmation, and then you have a case before the justices, the justice is required to recuse for six years after that gift was made. you have flown the justice around on a private plane, the justice for six years has to be recused of cases at the benefactor -- if the benefactor has cases before the supreme court. the bill talks about amicus briefs. they are supposed to be expert briefs that help the court understand arcane issues, but in reality it ha

nbc's erin mclaughlin is in tel aviv for us, nbc's gabe gutierrez in the white house, and steph twitty, msnbc military analyst. erin, what's the latest from there? >> reporter: chris, today we managed to reach the director of the burns unit inside the al-shifa hospital complex given the near total communications blackout covering the gaza strip now due to the fuel shortage, we were able to reach him very briefly. it was a short conversation before the line got cut off, and he confirmed that the israeli military continues to search the al-shifa complex. he said that today they seemed to be focused on the basement of the surgical unit. he confirmed the israeli military assertion that during this raid not a single shot has been fired, and he said that the israeli military provided the doctors hundreds of patients, as well as the people sheltering insides hospital with food and water last night. still, he painted this desperate humanitarian situation. he says that he still is trapped inside of the surgical building. he said that israeli snipers continue to surround the hospital, not lettin

gabe, we're seeing these live pictures. it looks like a pretty significant turnout.he march is still about an hour and a half away from officially beginning. >> reporter: yeah, fred. they decided to move up some of the speeches. we're expecting them to get going in just a few minutes on that stage behind us. these people have come from all over the country, people being brought in largely by bus, by some of the organizations participating in this rally. organizers told me they think this is going to be the largest free palestine rally in u.s. history. that remains to be seen. you can see the crowd gathering behind me. we know those speeches are going to continue on that stage until right around 4:00 p.m. that's when these demonstrators are going to march just a couple blocks to the white house, which is just beyond where we're standing and they're going to rally there. what we're not expecting, fred, is any sort of organized civil disobedience today as we have seen during some of the rallies here in washington in recent weeks. we've seen hundreds of arrests outside t
