.: could i footnote what gabe said? obviously everything he said is right. i talked to a young congresswoman from rhode island who had gone to north carolina as a campaign, and said -- this is right after the harris switch -- "they were apologizing to me, only had 20 people signing up for the event," and then he signed up in 120 people showed up. he said if 10 people were coming, 50 people were coming. it was remarkable to him -- they didn't particularly want to see a congressman from rhode island. but when harris went on the ticket there was this surge that no one expected. north carolina is significant because that is a straight that democrats would love to put into play. that is a state that democrats would love to put into pay. -- that is a state that democrats would love to put into play. not only is she competitive in the blue wall states, michigan, pennsylvania, and wisconsin, but across the sun belt states, nevada, arizona, georgia, and maybe north carolina. having that broader map makes a huge difference in giving you multiple paths to winning the e

gabe, bring us up to speed, what is the latest? >> reporter: this deal has been in the works for two years. just a short time ago, president biden calling this a feat of diplomacy. as you alluded to this, this is a pillar of his administration, preserving global alliances. we heard it several weeks ago at the nato summit in washington. this prison swap has come to fruition. i want to go into details about how this prisoner swap came together, citing a senior administration official. this had been in the works for two years, and taken on various iterations since the effort began in december of 2022. that's just after brittney griner was released in a prisoner exchange. this was negotiated through intelligence channels, led by the cia. and the russians would not agree to a swap without vadim krasikov. he was that assassin in germany who was convicted of murder. the germans would not agree to any type of prisoner swap without him involved. secretary of state antony blinken was the first official, according to a senior administration o

gabe gutierrez always good to see you. thank you, sir. democratic strategist, former obama campaign adviser, give us a look behind the curtain, if you will, take us behind the scenes. what do you think is happening in these final hours before the vice president has to make a decision? >> well, if rumor is to be quoted as true, she has always made that decision. we're waiting to see what that addition happens to be tomorrow in the rollout. i think what it looks like, a video likely to be released across social media. we're going to see? a lead up to the rally, a lot of excitement from demographicic sur rates who are going to tout the new vp kmois, and we're going to see a coalescing around the person, the game way we saw two weeks ago with kamala harris. i think that's going to be a huge thing for the party. it's going to be a huge thing for, i think, multiple demographics. we also recognize that kamala harris has ushered in a wave of fundraising, volunteer support unlike anything we have seen in presidential history in the united states.

joining us now, nbc news senior white house correspondent gabe gutierrez, and "politico" white house correspondent and coauthor of the west wing play book, eli stokols. let's start with the vp stakes, what are sources telling you about how soon she will announce and do we know if she has made her decision? >> reporter: we don't believe she has made her decision yet. the best indication is she plans to meet with top contenders over the next 72 hours or so. two sources familiar with the matter are saying that the formal vetting process by the law firm is done. that portion is finished but the in-person meetings are among the last steps before vice president harris makes her pick. you see the list of top contenders there. she's expected to be in washington, d.c. throughout the weekend, and several candidates on the short list have reshuffled or canceled plans over the next few days, suggest ing they need to clear time for face-to-face interview. at this point we don't have any indication she has made a final decision just yet. as you mentioned, they are already planning for that event o

joining us, gabe gutierrez, nbc's garrett haake, they have the latest on the trump-vance campaign., what exactly did trump say about the debate, whether it's going to happen or not? >> reporter: look, this is an overnight post, calling them fake news, abc, calling correspondents by name, some of whom are participating, some probably not. and wonders aloud, why would i do that debate on that network, saying harris had turned down offers on other networks, some of those are still pending. the bottom line, jose, it looks to me donald trump working the reps ahead of this debate. complaining about the personalities he doesn't like, as a way to perhaps lower expectations for himself. muddy the waters about questions that might be asked and how his performance might be handled if and when he shows up for that debate on the 10th. >> gabe, meanwhile, what is the harris campaign concern? >> reporter: well, jose, separate from that truth social post overnight, the harris campaign is now raiing issues about the rules for this debate and the trump campaign is now responding. essentially, the ha

jose. >> and, gabe, any reaction from the trump camp? >> yes, there was pretty much immediate reaction from former president trump. he posted on social media that he thought the interview was boring and that vice president harris rambled incoherently, and j.d. vance has already slammed vice president harris for what he calls her shifting positions, and that she had been coached to sound more moderate. and of course this comes after conservatives had been blasting the harris campaign for not putting her in this type of setting, not having her answer unscripted questions in a major interview for about 40 days since the president biden dropped out of the race. but again, the harris supporters say that she has done it. so let's put this behind us, and move forward to the debate. and move forward to speaking to the american people, which the harris campaign has announced a battleground blitz over the labor day weekend. >> gabe gutierrez in the white house. thank you so much. >>> symone, i want to ask you first, you know the vice president wel

joining us now, nbc news senior white house correspondent gabe gutierrez, nbc news correspondent dashaurns. gabe, with just one week until the dnc, the mood inside the h harris cam ppaign has to be onef optimism. >> reporter: kexuberant is the word i would use they say essentially we are back they watched the rollout of tim walz last week and they've seen the crowd sizes of the last several days i was at an event in detroit last week, thousands of people, and the harris campaign says that they want to maintain this momentum heading into the dnc. of course, the harris campaign is getting some criticism that the vice president has not sat down for a major interview or held a major press conference. the campaign says that she'll do that in due time, possibly by the end of the month at this point, they are, again, focusing on those crowds and focusing also on the rollout of some potential policy proposals. that's another criticism that so far the campaign hasn't really focused on any policy proposals thus far since vice president harris is now on top of the ticket on thursday, we are told

joining me correspondent gabe gutierrez. the democrats are riding big momentum but they're also fighting an action from donald trump's attacks on running mate tim walz's resume. >> reporter: the harris campaign feels tim walz is a fantastic messenger and point to his 24 years of service in the army national guard over the weekend they did respond to those attacks, namely from senator jd vance and others, that governor tim walz had previously said that he handled weapons in war well the harris campaign says that he misspoke, that he would never mean to insult veterans and undermine america's -- american service in this country. in fact, he -- the walz thanked senator vance for putting his life on the line for our country. that's according to the statement over the weekend but this week they are deploying him across the country to fund raise. they feel that so far he's been a fantastic messenger when it comes to that, and they feel that his midwestern values will play well in those battleground states. >> thanks to you, gabe g
