gabe gutierrez is there for us. gabe, what was the night like? >> reporter: good morning. take a look at this burnt out car. there was a shooting that happened just down the street. two people dead, one person injured. no arrests so far, but investigators right now are looking for a man armed with a long gun. this violence is not what jacob blake's family had been pleading for. overnight protests in kenosha, wisconsin, turning deadly. >> we have shots fired. we don't want you out here. move. >> reporter: authorities clearing the streets after reports of gunshots. police say at least two people are dead, one person injured. mobilized more national guard members. some protesters ignored a curfew. authorities deploying tear gas. this is the third straight night of violence protest here. the community is on edge. >> this is pathetic to happen in our country and in the state of wisconsin. it's just anarchists taking advantage of the situation. >> reporter: the chaos came despite jacob blake's family pleading for peaceful protests. >> they shot my son. seven times. seven times.

nbc's gabe gutierrez is in chicago now, gabe, how are things today? >> reporter: hi, there.s mostly peaceful compared to the previous night where we saw all that violence and looting here on the magnificent mile and behind me you can see one of the many stores that are now boarded up, this is a high-end area, a lot of luxury stores, lot of them were left in tatters a day and a half ago after a police shooting on sunday afternoon. what we have noticed in chicago, an incredibly mistrust in the police. the police department says that these officers were fired upon on sunday but they returned fire, but through social media, many people in the crowd thought different things about the shooting, felt the officers fired on a child and ended up being a 20-year-old man, they say that misinformation and the mistrust of the police fueled this latest wave of violence. we spoke with a business owner who was frustrated, she managed to escape any violence a day and a half ago but previously after the death of george floyd, her shop had been damaged heavily in a previous wave of violence. ta

. >> nbc's gabe gutierrez, a lot to comb through there. >>> mika? >> let's bring in professor and author, eddie glaude jr. so much to worry about and be deeply disturbed about here. what are you thinking so far about what is happening in kenosha? >> well, i'm trying to make sense of it. you know, we get a stark contrast mika. a man who supposedly had a knife in his car is shot in the back 17 times. a 17-year-old white teenager kills two people, injures another, talks down the street with an ar-15, and he's not approached by police in an aggressive way or the like. so you get a sense of the ways in which bodies are policed. that's the first thing. the second thing is sometimes we are concerned about the violence of protests. i want to say we need to shift the concern. that is to say, what are the reasons behind it. we need to think more carefully about who are we more concerned about in these instances and we have to finally address this. the last point i would make is this. the country binges on black grief and suffering like a show on netflix. we h
