the aftermath of the tragedy last weekend in tucson, we pray for the recovery of congresswoman gabi giffords, i'm not going speculate about what led that troubled man to do what he did, but we should recommit ourselves to improve public discourse going forward so that we can sustain a functioning democracy that is important both in the context of serving our national interest, but also to collectively solve global challenges for the benefit of our people and others. this transparency relies on a vibrant, independent, fourth estate that serves as a vital check and balance in our democracy. the first amendment created deliberate tension in the relationship between the media and government. this tension helps to sustain effective oversight of the government in which i serve. when i stand up every day to answer questions about z policies and action, in a small way i am part of this process where government is accountable to its people and, trust me, the system works. and i have the fan mail to prove it particularly when i do appear on fox. some fox viewers have me on speed dial. transparency doe

our thoughts immediately went to our colleague, congresswoman giffords, her staff, and those involved in this horrific event. to say that gabi difference is well-liked is an understatement. -- giffords is well liked is an understatement. i do not think i have ever seen her without a smile on her face. as my colleague trent franks said this weekend, despite their philosophical differences, never had a curse word passed between them. truly a dear person. our family has been praying for her, for the recovery of all those that are injured, praying for the families who are grieving a loss. it is time to mourn today with those who mourn, greek with those who crave, to take prudent measures to make sure the public is protected from these things in the future. i also think it is a time to cherish our freedoms. it is time to recognize the freedom of assembly, the freedom of speech, are at the center of american life. despite the alarm that we all feel from these event, it is the right time for us to cling to the freedoms we enjoy. you know me. i have always sought to manifest civility in the public debate. it is always important that

giffords is deeply missed by her colleagues. one by one, representatives from all parts of the country and all points of view rose in common cause to honor gaby and the other victims and to reflect on our shared hopes for this country, as shrill and discordant as our politics can be at times. it was a moment reminded us of who we really are and how much would depend on one another. what we cannot escape our grief for those we have lost, we carry on now, mindful of those troops. we carry on because we have to. after all, this is still a time of great challenges for us to solve. we have to grow jobs faster at and forge a stronger, more competitive economy. we have to shore up our budget and bring down our deficits. we have to keep our people safer and see to it that the american dream remains vibrant and alive for our children and our grandchildren. these are challenges i believe we can meet. i believe it can do it in a way worthy of those who sent us here to serve. so as business resumes, i look forward to working together in that same spirit of common cause with members of congress from both parties. before we are democrats or republicans, we
