gadi schwartz is in southern los angeles on the front lines there. good morning. >> reporter: the winds have been gusting all night long. this is the scene right now. we're starting to see where the hot spots are flaring up, that is a home up on the hill that is burning. you see the black smoke. let me show you what firefighters have been doing throughout the night. this is porter ranch, ron of many areas that is under evacuation. 100,000 people at this moment have been asked to leave their homes. you have houses like this that have been completely gutted would i fire. fortunately is firefighters in this neighborhood managed to save most of the homes. but this house right here and this house right here appear to be a loss. it just takes one ember to get up into the attic for the fire to consume the entire house. and the fire stretches all the way to the foothills. southern california with no stopping the flames that tore through neighborhoods, forcing hundreds near los angeles to evacuate, including animals, pets and livestock. >> where the wind is b

nbc's gadi schwartz joins us with terrifying scenes from both ends of the state. at the end of the driveway that home has been reduced to ashes and rubble. everything that he had has been burned. all of these cars have been destroyed. in fact the fire was burning so hot, you can see this is an aluminum alloy wheel and it's melted. aluminum melts at about 1,300 degrees, so it gives you an idea of just how hot things were burning. this was an area that saw the worst of what they call the diablo winds here, effectively turning all of this into a blast furnace. the family that lives here says when they looked over at the ridge, they saw sheets of fire raining down on them. that's when they got out of here. these winds are expected to kick back up today, but the difference between then and now is then it was just one spark. now we have embers that are burning and smoldering all throughout this area. you can see this heavy smoke that is coming from all of those little spot fires. firefighters are out here on the lines trying to put them out before the winds pick up, but

nbc's gadi schwartz is in porter ranch, california with the latest.hat are you seeing there on the ground as it plays out? >> reporter: ayman, it's incredible. this whole area, porter ranch as well as other communities are under mandatory evacuations. this is affecting over 100,000 people in the southern california area. last night was such a valiant night by the firefighters out here protecting so many structures. unfortunately this was one that they could not save. they were out here for hours on this particular house trying to save it. but as you can see over here, it's a total loss now including the car in front. it really speaks to the power of the wind. this fire was coming from the hills over there and it was pushing its way into these communities and all it took was a small little 'emmer to hit one of these houses, find itself underneath a shingle and then you have devastation like this. firefighters worked all night long without stopping to try to stop this from happening, and they were able to save hundreds of homes. so for every image of a
