we're going to get over to gadi schwartz. last time i saw you, you were on the 3rd street promenade. you were watching as people were looting a foot action and cops had flooded in to arrest them. it seems like you're still there. give us an update on what's happening now. >> reporter: yeah, so we saw that foot action being looted for about eight to ten minutes and saw the police finally coming, you probably saw it live on tv, so right now a lot of these people are being processed. you've got about 20 or so that are now wearing those handcuffs, those plastic handcuffs and sitting here waiting. officers are actually giving some of them water right now. they're pouring it in their mouth for them. which is kind of weird because everyone's wearing masks and so it's this awkward dance. some people have been cordial with the police officers. others have been somewhat hostile. things are simmering down on this street right now and they're waiting for transport. i'm going to walk you down this way. this was the foot action that they w

here's gadi schwartz. just trashed along where you are, gadi. >> reporter: absolutely. this is 4th street in santa monica. you can see this has been destroyed all the way down the block. we were just talking about fires. we saw police put out a fire over at this chase bank. this chase bank has been looted. you can see right there, that door has been smashed in. we saw it looted for 45 minutes. police were not able to get to the scene. this is where we saw about 200, 300 people just standing, going into stores, grabbing whatever they could. this is some of what's left behind. this was happening ri ining whi were engaged on the other side of the promenade. there was a large, peaceful crowd there, being respectful, taking a knee. for most of the smafternoon, the were two completely separate entities. that was going on with no police in the area. and this is what was happening inside of the stores. now, lester, i want to walk you across the street. this is where we started to see some police. they have responded to this area, they brought in the sheriff's department and bro

i've just been alerted to go to gadi schwartz, out in hollywood, california. gadi, what's happening there? >> reporter: hey, brian. so that group that you were watching, they've actually been -- they've been surrounded on this corner here in los angeles. i'm going to show you what's going on. they're ordering people out of the car. in fact, here what's we're going to do. we're going to kill that light. if you don't mind, i'm going to bring you right over here. we don't want to interfere with what's going on. we just want to be here observing and making sure that everything goes according to the book and also document what's happening down the street. i'm not sure if you can see. if you take a step right here, carlos, we're going to stay out of the way. you've got people inside of that car right there and there are one, two, three, four, five cars, six cars. so this is probably the back end of the protest that they've been able to block in here, and they have people coming out with their hands up. it's hard to make out, but they're going to be moving over to the

msnbc correspondent gadi schwartz is in los angeles where he's been following protests for the last few days. gadi, what's it like there. >> reporter: chris, we're starting to see a significant amount of arrests being made. it's hard to make out here, but this is the back end of a protest group that was split off from a larger group. they've got about 30, 40 people. in fact, we can't go any further over here. hey, is it okay if we just post up right here? can we just post up right here? >> that's fine. >> reporter: okay. so we're up a little bit on a stoop, and you can see what looks like this entire block of cars, the ones that are in the road. they were filled with people. all those people have been taken out. they were put on the ground, and now we've seen some of them being handcuffed, zip-tied, and then taken over to the side. police basically blocked this area off. we don't know exactly what they're being charged with at this point. it is two hours past curfew. but what we do know is that this was the backside of a rather peaceful protest. we haven't seen any looting tonight. we h

starting off in los angeles is g gadi schwartz. we're going to gadi right now. gadi, where are you? and what's the situation? >> take look behind me. this is a pretty large crowd here. this is in front of the iconic lapd or the los angeles city hall. you can see lapd is down there below. they are guarding city hall. but they are much more at ease than they were yesterday. they don't have their riot helmets on, as we saw yesterday. they do have officers posted up on basically every street corner around here. there are probably more officers in this vicinity than there are protesters, even though this crowd is extremely large, it's still not as big as yesterday. the curfew here in los angeles has been lifted. but the protesters here are demanding more and more from lapd, even though what happened happened in minneapolis. they say they need localized reform here. you were just talking what happened in buffalo. the speakers here have been speaking for many time, sharing their stories of police brutality. locally they say they have also experienced overaggressiveness from police. many of

lawrence. >> gadi schwartz reporting from los angeles. thank you, gadi, for that report. really appreciate it. we're now going across the country to new york city, to nbc's chris jansing. chris, where are you, and what is the situation in new york city tonight? >> reporter: yeah, in new york city, widespread arrests across at least three boroughs, including here in manhattan. let me show you exactly where i am, lawrence. this is the iconic plaza hotel. across the street from it is central park. and maybe about 90 minutes ago it was chaotic here. there were hundreds of protesters who had still been marching. we saw in at least two minutes, in just two minutes, 60 police cars flying across park avenue, sigh le sirens blaring, and coming here, essentially encircling those protesters. many of them were able to scatter, some of them it looked like into central park. but there were also a number of arrests here, something we saw over and over and over again, making good on a promise by the mayor, who said enough is enough. police were going to enforce the 8:00 curfew. it was su

gadi schwartz in los angeles. gadi, i'm hoping you can tell us of a more peaceful night tonight. >> reporter: yeah, much more peaceful night and a little bit of a victory that protesters are celebrating here as well. in fact, i want to show you this sign over here. take a look. that says "defund lapd." we've seen that sign in this protest crowd. we've seen it all day long. we've seen it over the last few days. and it turns out that the city here, los angeles, it has agreed to cut the budget for lapd by about $150 million. so not only are protesters out here reacting to the news of those charges in minnesota, they also see a little bit of progress here in los angeles. however, some skeptics are saying wait a minute, this is a pandemic. there's going to be cuts anyway, this is not necessarily a large amount when you consider that lapd's budget is somewhere along $1.6 million. so that's one of the things that we're seeing out here play out on the streets. you can see behind us this is coming from the city hall just do

gadi schwartz just outside city hall? >> that's right. there's still a very large, spirited crowd out here. they have been here for over a week. half a country away, they are still demanding accountability. here at city hall you can see this is the iconic city hall and concessions continue to be made on the local level. in fact, you have police officers here today, there is no curfew. much more relaxed environment. you have police with no -- yesterday, they were wearing riot helmets and today they're not. we should point out, especially after that conversation you just had, many of them are not wearing masks. many people in the crowd are not wearing masks but i would say that 70 to 80% who come out here are wearing masks but the main concern is about police accountability. they have demanded a reform here in lapd. lapd and the city has agreed to cut the budget for lapd for about $150 million, but these protesters say there's still a long road to go. brian? >> gadi schwartz, let's hope it stays peaceful tonight in los angeles, thank you fo

gadi schwartz in hollywood. curfew is 6:00 p.m. in los angeles county, one of the earlier curfews. what are we hearing there? what is the situation? >> reporter: the booms, unclear if hearing flash bangs or possibly fireworks. we've seen fireworks set off near police. behind us is line of people that have been arrested, unclear how they're going to be processed, whether released on their own recognizance, we've seen that. in l.a. over 700 people arrested but as you know during the pandemic about 5,000 nonviolent offenders released from jail, many of the court systems are shut down. there's a big chance these people will be released within a few hours, possibly by the morning. tell you what police say, we haven't had chance to talk to people in custody yet, but police say there was looting down the way at rite aid, they sent officers in this area and for some reason stopped a bunch of cars in this area. some people they think may have been looting. others were out after the curfew. curfew is 6:00 as you mentioned. what we've seen is this convergence of almost three different groups

gadi schwartz, you are in pasadena. i know you have been talking to hospital staff there.t have they been telling you and what does what we're seeing in pasadena tell us about what's happening across the rest of the state there? >> reporter: kristen, as you just mentioned we're seeing a lot more cases here in california. it's not just confirmed cases from people being tested. it's also hospitalizations. governor gavin newsom saying that hospitalizations are up about 32% across the state. we wanted to see what that means here in pasadena. we're at the huntington hospital. in fact, i'm joined here by dr. kimberly shriner, an expert in infectious disease. doctor, you were telling me a little bit ago that you guys are seeing an uptick here at the hospital, right? >> yeah. two weeks ago we had 17 inpatients. we're now up to 53 inpatients. so each night we seem to be admitting more patients with coronavirus so there's definitely an uptick in number of cases and hospitalizations here. >> reporter: doctor, are you seeing a difference in the type of patients? >> i think we're seein

gadi schwartz in santa monica, california. steve schmidt remains with us. just think we can -- okay, steve schmidt, hold that thought. gadi, go ahead what have we missed. >> reporter: brian, so it's been interesting. we've seen this big contingent of officers making arrests over here. and then incredibly, while all this was going on with all of these officers, there were still people sneaking into the back of foot action from this side street going in. we just saw a large group of officers going in there with nonlethal rounds to try to -- there we go -- these are some of the people that were sneaking into this foot action while all this was going on. they were looking for an opportunity to go inside. here we go. and then they could see the people were being arrested over here. now we're seeing people go inside, and then we've got people that are obviously out here agitating. people are agitating us, people are agitating police, but this has been the dynamic situation. hey, how's it going? >> get the message out -- >> reporter: give me just a little bit of s

and joining us now with the latest on the situation in los angeles is nbc's gadi schwartz, who has been covering the story here for days in los angeles. gadi, what's the situation tonight? >> reporter: we were on the backside of a large protest that was making its way around los angeles. you can see all these police that have formed up here. in fact, it looks like they're headed somewhere else. they're moving pretty quickly. i want to show you what happened a few minutes ago. so there was a traffic stop, this was the tail end of the protest. there was some cars following behind, quite a few of them expressing, you know, solidarity with black lives matter movement. come this way. i want to show you all of a sudden there was a motorcycle police that -- motorcycle police officer that stopped this car, then this car was swarmed with officers. they came in from all different sides. and then as you can imagine, there was a lot of protesters around. so what happened was, the officers were making some arrests. they pulled a man out of that car and then a bottle flew over and hit one of the offi

gadi schwartz is our correspondent in van nuys, california, tonight, where we've had some trouble in the streets. gadi? >> reporter: unfortunately here in van nuys, we've seen certain instances of looting. in fact, you can see the l.a. fire department has been putting out this fire inside of this pharmacy. i'm just going to take you over here and show you what they're dealing with. they had a lot of windows smashed out. they were able to go inside, clear it out of medications and anything inside that may have been valuable. they had so much time in there that they were to set a fire just down the way. police had been holding back a growing crowd here, but this is van nuys, and this is pretty far away from the protests obviously that we saw in santa monica. some of those protests that we saw down in los angeles along hollywood. there was a protest here, but this was not a community that was directly involved in that protest. this is just one of those communities on the side. so you've got officers lining up here. we talked to some of the people out here. we were wondering if the looter

joining us now is gadi schwartz, nbc news correspondent, and he's at city hall in los angeles where the protests are under way in the shadow of lapd headquarters. gadi, thanks for starting us off. talk about what the police chief said to those protesters today when he went into that crowd and what's happening now. >> reporter: yeah. joy, 11 nights and here we are in front of the hall of justice. i'm going to take you through what you were just describing because it was a very memorable moment out here. this is where the crowd was gathered. it's about 1,000 people strong. that's what it looked like a little bit earlier. and it wasn't necessarily in front of lapd headquarters at first because lapd headquarters is down the street. i want to show you where it's at. so this is the hall of justice, city hall, and then that building down there, that is lapd headquarters. that's where that small meeting with some community leaders was going on with the chief of police. and then somebody from this crowd found out about what what's going on down there. they took this crowd of about 1,000 people a

statue turned violent last night with one man shot and a member of a militia group under arrest gadi schwartz has more >> reporter: on top of the and an armed militia trying to protect it it is unclear how the showdown began but during the showdown a man in a blue shirt is seen ripping signs from women, pushing them back, and throwing one protester to the ground suddenly, several give chase striking at the man with a skateboard he shoots out pepper spray before being tackled, then the sound of gunfire in all of the chaos the militia known as the new mexico civil guard forming a protective line around the man now identified as steven ray baca the son of a former sheriff's deputy and recent candidate for city council. while yards away volunteer medics try to stabilize a protester shot several times and now in critical condition. when police arrived they detained the militia and arrested baca charging him with aggravated battery with a firearm the mayor of albuquerque saying the violence has to stop. >> it appears the perpetrator was agitating at the protest well before the shooting took place.

joining us now from los angeles, gadi schwartz, what is going on in los angeles right now?ally, a remarkable scene. there was a press conference out here in lapd headquarters. the chief was addressing a small crowd of community leaders and then all of a sudden about a thousand people came from a protest over in this area. they came up to the fence. they were yelling. chanting. they didn't understand why they were not invited. seemed like closed event. the police chief is over there. he is still meeting with people. he was just speaking with people over here. we will see if he can chat with him. the chief spent time speaking with you. you've got a sign here, looks like holding a sign with two men on this, their faces right there. can you tell us what happened here? >> jason, they shoot in bronson, murdered by culver city police. 20 2000. >> reporter: and this is 1999. did you know him? >> yes i did. >> reporter: what happened with these cases, do you remember? >> this police officer in this case, they walked away. in this case walked away as well. >> reporter: your main conc

to begin, let's get the latest from gadi schwartz out at city hall in los angeles. gadi? >> reporter: good evening, brian. we saw a pretty remarkable scene out here. you see this crowd here. this is about a thousand people, and just a little while ago, they found out about a press conference that was happening down there at lapd headquarters. that's the building over there. so this entire crowd started marching down to lapd headquarters where the chief was speaking in front of the hq, and they basically started chanting to the point that the chief came over and spoke to the protesters. it was almost like the protesters were able to hijack that press conference with community leaders. the chief met with some protesters, promised some reform, responded to allegations of brutality over the last week or so. some of the videos that we've seen of police waving batons here in los angeles. and some of the protesters said that they were empty words until they actually see it from the rank and file. brian, i got to tell you, speaking of the rank and file, during that press conferen

gadi schwartz, thank you. from my home state. i appreciate this. >> joining me dr. lippy roy.o you make of the surge we're seeing in several states across the south and west? >> i mean, good afternoon, alex. i'm almost speechless. so that white house briefing that we had on friday, the first one in two months. so two months have passed since. what do you think is happening in the country. it is just an explosion of cases. all over the country. we know, we in the public health communities what needs to be done to mitigate the risk to decrease the spread of the virus. it is not been happening in many of the states where we see a rise. in new york state, on the other hand, as you know very well, we went through a hellish period. and the local leadership at local mayors and at state level, governor cuomo made the tough but evidence-based decision based on the health advisers to shut down. to really just stringent social control because that is the only thing ultimately that will decrease the spread of the virus. >> here is what is irning to me, to your point, in new york, we saw w

nbc's gadi schwartz in los angeles. what action is the governor now proposing? >> well, alicia, so far, the governor is keeping a close eye on what we're seeing here in los angeles where infection rates have jumped up to 9%, which is above one of the thresholds for reopening. while hospital capacity here seems to be holding steady. however, down in impierial county on the southern border, the infection rate is 23%. that's the highest in california. the outbreaks happening among those who work in the agriculture sector, and their hospitals are way overcapacity with hundreds of patients being transferred to other counties. now, the governor is saying that imperial county needs to reimpose some of the lockdown measures there immediately, which would make it the first county that would go back into heavy restrictions during this second wave. now, the county board of supervisors, they did have an emergency meeting on friday. but in the end, decided not to take any immediate action, saying they would be making some announcements soon. meanwhile, places like san franci
