so, joyce, what do you make, first, of the request and what might it mean for matt gaetz?this is a standard request that you'll see from the government and a defendant jointly when cooperation is ongoing and it can mean one of two things, chris, it can mean that the cooperation is productive and that they're making cases on other suspects but they need a little bit more time. on other occasions, though, it can mean that while there's a good faith effort to cooperate being made by someone in greenberg's shoes that it hasn't yet been productive. the government is giving the defendant a little bit more time to see if he can do something that will help him get credit for sentencing. we don't know which of those two scenarios is at play here. it seems a little bit more likely since this is characterized as ongoing meetings that investigators and prosecutors simply need more time to debrief greenberg and make sure they get all of the information that he's privy too. this probably means that estimates that gaetz would be indicted in july were a little bit too optimistic and it ma

so the investigation into congressman gaetz, they're relying on a lot of other witnesses and documentssentence? >> it's suspected the judge will agree and give this extra time before he gets his sentence. what's interesting is we know since the investigation of the congressman, that's active and ongoing. they are still bringing witnesses before the grand jury. we also know that investigators have done another round of outreach to some of the women involved in this alleged sex trafficking, alleged prostitution. this investigation is ongoing and it really looks like from our reporting that investigators are trying to cross their t's and dot their i's before they make this really critical decision about whether they can really charge the congressman or anyone else involved in this. >> based on your reporting, paula, are these other women cooperating with the investigators? >> it does appear they have gotten most of the cooperation they expected. not across the board. not everyone is as honest or cooperative as they had hoped, but it does appear many of these women have lawyers, most of th

gaetz is not charged with crimes and denied wrongdoing. with me is pete williams.e amount of time greenberg has been cooperating with prosecutors, anything you can read into that and what this request for a delay on sentencing might mean? >> sure. remember he pleaded guilty in may, may 17th. he'd already been cooperating at that point and the government wanted to get his cooperation nailed down, so he pleaded guilty. they dropped a whole raft of charges against him. he did plead guilty to six counts. they carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 12 years in prison, but there is a federal statute that allows prosecutors to seek relief from those mandatory minimums if someone offers substantial cooperation. so that's what's in it for joel greenberg. he wants to try to get down below that 12-year mandatory and get his sentence potentially reduced. on the other hand, it takes time, you might say well, gee, two months of talking, what else is there to say. >> right. >> he makes statements to the government but then the government has to verify them. it has to look at recor

the opportunity to put forth other republican members of those supposedly florida congressman matt gaetze taylor green have expressed much interest. what can democrats do to make this badly needed investigation feel legitimate to americans of both parties without turning it into a political circus that some congressional republicans want to provoke? >> well, rev, i believe that the investigation is completely necessary. i believe that pelosi's moving forward with good faith, as she did negotiating with the republicans, and the republicans got everything they wanted, mind you. but that is not to say that no matter what happens with this investigation, the republicans will make it political. i'm not saying it is right, the right thing to do. i'm saying what we're going to see, because the republicans know an investigation hurts them. so they could be part of it, in which they'll have to endorse it which would have been problematic, or they could choose not to have anything to do with it and just attack it as political. that's what they're going to try and do. it will be successful at some

what does it mean for matt gaetz and his potential liability here? >> it tells me prosecutors are satisfied with joel greenberg's cooperation as it's gone so far. this is a standard move any time you have a cooperator. you want to push off his sentencing as late as possible, really until after all the other cases have been made, any trials have been held because you need to hold that over the cooperator's head. if you get him sentenced now, he's not going to have incentive to continue to cooperate. i used to do this all the time, when a cooperator was giving new information that i believed would lead to new charges and arrests. there were times i pushed off sentences for years even. >> understood. okay. topic, big topic. you've written a new book on the legacy of former attorney general bill barr. you write that barr brought to the attorney general's job a dangerously distorted conception of his own power to impose that social order on what he saw as the needy, dim-witted masses. explain that point of view as you see it and what effect it had on the
