one of our key activities is to conduct surveys to gage how americans believe their democracy is fairing. first let me explain bright line watches motivation for conducting surveys. we draw our organization 's name in how citizens can safeguard democracy when threatened. there are two conditions that must hold. there must be wide agreement among citizens that a given principal or right is so crucial its violation would amount to a fundamental breach of democratic principals. we wanted to find out whether there are any bright lines in the united states today. so we undertook a series of surveys. since there are many principals associated with did this, we make 27 statements that are related to people's notions what democracy is about, then we ask our respondents to rate these principals as proceeding on democracy. i'll go into a few details in a minute but just to anticipate our key findings. the public demonstrates quite a bit of agreement about which principals are really the crucial once for democracy. this agreement extends even to people who are on opposite sides of part he sides. ev
