and just because they're unrealized, believe me, that doesn't make them into gains or potential gains. losses are losses. realized or otherwise. and the notion of being in something for the long-term does not justify owning damaged goods. the stocks of companies that are in bad shape in the misguided hope, well, hey, come on, man, it's got to come back if you hold it for the long-term. the idea behind buy and hold that once you purchase your stocks, you just wait. me, i've never liked waiting and it also happens to be a terrible strategy if you think it is a strategy. that's why i'm saying you have to keep track of your investments after you buy them, doing the homework i talk about on the show. you've got to do it all the time. reading the sec filings, listen to the conference calls, reading transcripts. much of the research that used to be available only to those paying millions in commissions can be found on the web like yahoo finance and that's worth reading. hey, it's your money! invest the time in it. the advocates of buy and hold act like you have a license not to pay attention

we did see a gain in employment in the household sector that outpaced the gain in the labor force but both were very small. a gain in 133,000. and actually that is a very small given how volatile that number is. i even think in the household survey there is this overall feeling that the labor situation is not really improving very significantly. lori: it is important to remind everybody this survey was taken before the government shut down, so what is your expectation for october now? >> we had not even got into where we might be. i do think there is some chance obviously government shutdown affected the private sector. companies in the midst of the uncertainty may have decided to hold off on hiring. we could see softer numbers in october and november. presumably that will come back in a couple of months. we have the january 15 deadline out there. while many don't think we will go down that road again, the uncertainty may cause businesses to stay i think in a more conservative mode. the economy is unlikely to strengthen significantly between that one. lori: it is a fair points to make

both men and women gained but men started gaining more relative to women after 1970. there have been a long slow down and mail progress from 1940 to 1970. >> yeah so of the whole period men and women gained about the same. women pulled ahead in the early part of the 20 century and men have been catching up ever since in terms of the cumulative games that they receive. that is really one element of good news. the good news that a big increase in longevity and not only is it quantitatively significant but economically significant in terms of improving people's lives. it's as important as the rest of the economy put together. that is a piece of good news. the second piece of good news is we have a lot of perspective games out there to be had as well. we estimate for example a 10% reduction in cardiovascular disease and in fact a 10% reduction in death rates from cancer as a present value that is a cumulative future value of about five chilean dollars. >> that's in the united states. >> that's just the u.s.. >> if you think of the technologies that would cause that kind o

we're now up just under a half a percent but a gain is a gain. >> and the reason that's happening we're getting the moves up today because of sector rotation. this has been the story all year. put up the sectors for the s&p 500. today, for example, utilities are big because we've seen a bond yield collapsing here. consumer staples, health care, days when consumer staples will be down and technology stocks up. today it's been down. my point is nothing goes down for very long. no sectors are down all year. that's why the s&p has been strong. meantime in the middle of the day we had some of the big heavy momentum stocks, high beta stocks move to the downside, netflix started up 9% and went straight down, dropped below its early price, closed yesterday. that's when things started moving south. high volume. we saw big beta names including apple, apple shed $15 in a matter of 15 minutes. linkedin, facebook, even some of the chinese internet like sina to the downside.

people thought, okay, i'm locking into gains, happy into an 18% gain. >> one of the first things i learned, don't just do something, stand there. that's sometimes the best advice for individual investors. who if you had sold stocks earlier last week, boom, you would have lost the year's biggest rally. >> exactly, and all the studies back there. when you miss the biggest one or two days of the year, how much that affects you long-term in your portfolio. what's happening, people missed out on thursday, what are they doing? they're buying friday 300 points higher. >> the treasure secretary jack lew told the senate finance committee this is unthinkable, what we're facing here. listen. >> there is a parlour sport in washington of when is the last minute? you can't do that with a debt limit. with a debt limit, if you look for the last minute and you make a mistake, you have done serious damage to the u.s. economy. to the world economy. it's just not responsible. it's reckless. >> so is this dysfunction and uncertainty something that investors are going to have to get used to? >> i think so. i do

if somebody bought that now, what kind of gains can they expect looking ahead? >> again, we're not looking to hit home runs with bkln. what we're looking for is solid consistent yield and, you know, at 3 or 4%, it's a pretty good place to be given that overnight paper and short-material bonds are virtually zero right now. i actually like the fact it's not moving around very much. >> that is yielding 4%, as you said, here is one with 6.7% yield pgx, tell us about that. >> sure, pgx is riskier, bill. it's an investment in preferred stock and interesting thing about preferreds is it is a fixed rate equity that trades like a long-term bond so if you reach for the 6% yield you could suffer if interest rates rise. i'm recommending we pair that up with b -- i'm sorry, with tbf which is really, i call it inverse to treasuries meaning this is a security that actually rises in value if interest rates go up. so if you believe that preferred stocks will value as interest rates rise, this thing will pick up the slack and put it both together you get a nice coupon and some pr
