[laughter]. i'm always feel a little embarrassed because i looked back and i kept think thanksgiving book was published in 1993 who wants to hear about it now? i feel honored that we call it those in the know or good friends of mine call at this time energizer bunny. it's the book that somehow kept going all these yeersz. i will tell you up front it was a book i thought that may be they wouldn't publish. my very first book was women of the silk. i knew that i was writing about something that was a little bit different because i didn't know about the women of the silk until i wanted to write something telling their story much the second book is the test book for us writers you hear that a lot where the p

she talks about her book "august gale." >> "august gale" is a story of two storms. once one is about a hurricane that word up the coast in 1935. and headed straight for newfoundland. where were my ancestors lived in the fishing village. during that time, these men sailed in 15-foot stories and scooters that were 40 or 60 feet. they had no warning of this devil, as they called it. as it went up the coast. where my grandfather was born, 300 people lost little 42 children -- 42 children lost their fathers so it was devastating for them. yet the other part of the storm is my grandfather. growing up, i never knew anything about him. as my father would refuse to talk about him. the book alternates between the real storm in 1935 and my grandfather, who created his own storms. i wrote this book because after i saw the movie, the perfect storm, i sat in the theater, and that movie resonated with me. i am irish and i am connected to the water, and i sat there. and i said, i can do that. two years later, when i talked to my father, and i said dad, i want to write books come an

reads 48 newfoundland fishermen killed in august gale. he knows all of his family is out in that storm and he just loses it and becomes hysterical. so my father tells me these two pieces and then he says maybe we can get in touch with family. and i'm thinking family? i never knew anything about lambros because he abandoned my dad, and my dad refused to talk about him. so on this night in my home in maine, i dreamed of giant waves and a grandfather i never met, and that began research into the august gale. and i spent nine years off and on because i worked for them as a journalist researching my dad and i and my sister traveled to newfoundland tointerview these survivors, people who lost their dad in the storm. we interviewed people but remember the gale and what it did in the communities of the research was incredible because the priest is going from door to door to tell all these families you've lost a son, you've lost a husband, you've lost three sons and one husband. it's a natural disaster that took all of their fathers away and the o

that began our research into the august gale, and i spent nine years off and on because i worked full time, researching, my dad, sister and i traveled to newfoundland to interview survivors, people who remembered the gale and what it did to the community. it was -- the research was incred baling. it was, you know, the priest who remembered -- the priest going door to door to tell all of the families you lost a son. you lost a husband. you lost three sons and one husband. it was just an event in their lives that was sort of like their 9/11. it was a natural disaster that took all of their fathers away. the other piece during that trip is learning about my grandfather. i mean, i never saw a picture of him, and my father was very ambivalent about going to new newfoundland, but i wanted to research the storm, and as we approached the rock, newfoundland, a glacier scraped island, and i looked out, overwhelmed of the emotion coming to the island where my ancestors lived and my grandfather was born, and i turned to dad, and i said did you ever think you'd go here? he said, not in a million y

the night of the gale many saw there fathers who returned to to their homes. and then to interview the fishermen that route for as the waves rose 40 up at 80 feet they were tied to the rigging praying let us get home. a few of them did. many did not. it resonated because of my irish background but the families were so grateful nobody had told the story for them. now this book brought me together with my new for the family that i did not know was existing. we're all cousins but also to learn about capt. patty patty, migrate of all was the legendary fishermen and had never lost a man over 25 years. fear less. many fishermen would go with their crosses, who water if the waves would rise they would throw it into this the. he would climb to the top of the rigging and yell i am not afraid of you. he was known for bringing home the most cod. people cannot believe he did not make it home. during the storm they feared the august retains and the night before he set sail his wife said dell go. not only was paddy going but taking the 12 year-old son, a 14 year-old son and

tropical storm son tinh, moving toward the northwesterly direction at 25 kilometers per hour, producing gale-force winds across much of the philippines and heavy rain as well as rough seas. high waves could top 4 meters along the coast. now, it should move out to sea by this evening. but it could intensify and move over the south china sea into a severe tropical storm and then may make the second landfall in vietnam on saturday. heavy rain is going to target the northern half of the philippines. as much as 150 millimeters of rain or more is likely for a wide area will locally 200 or more. so watch out for flooding as well as landslides here. out towards the west, heavy rain is also pounding parts of the southern parts of thailand, because another disturbance right here. thunderstorms and rough seas will be a concern through the the day here and up towards the north, dry weather across the korean peninsula and much of japan. but a storm system is moving into the northern half the country today. temperatures are dropping out of the 20s tokyo. 19 degrees. meanwhile, warming up to 20 in seoul today. h

these winds are going to be gusty, gale force winds as well, gusts that will reach up to 60-plus milesour across this area. and that also encompasses the washington, dc, maryland, virginia areas as well, for our viewing region. so those winds, very dangerous. we're talking about a wide path, swath of winds here that are going to be even more dangerous than hurricane irene was. so you really have to take this seriously. here's a look at projected wind gusts. tonight, we're talking about 20 to 25 mile-per-hour range. but look at this on monday by 5:00. gales and wind gusts up to 53 miles per hour, increasing to the mid-60s bit time we get into monday night, into tuesday. once again, 50 mile-per-hour wind gusts, only dying down once we get into the early morning hours of wednesday. right now, we've got tropical storm warnings along the north carolina coastal region. i do anticipate to see those increasing later today. future cast showing you, look at this, 2:00 this afternoon, we're already into copious amounts of rainfall here. it just increases in the overnight hours, torrential rain co

gale force wind and heavy rain are impacting across the northern half of the philippines. it looks like it will become a severe tropical storm as the it moves over the south china sea and may make the second landfallen vietnam, on saturday. stormiest conditions are easing in the philippines. but we are anticipating 150 millimeters or more over the next 72 hours. mudslides. landslide. as well as the flooding will be a great risk here. and you will notice that heavy rain will be -- will be moving into parts of the, vietnam as well as we head into the weekend. this is not because of a tropical storm, but a low pressure system has dumped quite heavy rain across the black sea region. we have some footage coming out of turkey. the floodwaters, caused injuries and damaged cars and houses, seriously. the same system caused the flash floods in the southeastern tip of the balkans monday, claiming the lives of three. conditions are improving in the locations. but parts of eastern and southern turkey will remain unsettled the next couple days. some where else dealing with heavy rain.

this is a very wide wind field, so you're going to be seeing some gale-force winds across a very huge area, across much of the cities here in the northeast. not just that, but cold air coming in out of canada. look at winnipeg with a high of zero. that's going to filter down into the appalachian mountains going through the early part of next week. could be seeing some very serious accumulations of snowfall into these regions. on the other side of the ocean, though, we are seeing a frontal area moving across portions of italy. that is going to push over toward the balkans, but the same storm system actually brought some severe weather towards portugal yesterday. i want to show you a video coming out of here in castelo branco, portugal, where a twister caused some serious damage to several factories. powerful winds also hit a parking lot damaging numerous vehicles here. it's estimated that the winds in the storm reached about 200 kilometers an hour, so very serious and dangerous storm here and roughed up a lot of cars. you can see as this continues to scroll off there towards the left,

today near wednesday you could see waves up to 5 meters and gale force winds here, too. it will be pulling away though. however, these two storms are really pulling in a lot of moisture across the main islands of japan here and we also have a couple of low pressure systems impacting the arch pell goes, so there is going to be heavy rain and thunderstorms and strong winds here and could see tornados as we head on into wednesday and into thursday we'll be seeing more snow making its way through. let's go to our hurricane rafael. it is just about to move past bermuda at the moment. it is moving 43 kilometers an hour which is good news. we don't like these storms to hang around. this is moving quickly. it is likely to pass bermuda and then to become a remnant low fairly quickly as it reaches the cooler waters and staying fairly far from eastern canada and can heading up towar the northeast. now, we are still likely to see about 100 millimeters of rain for bermuda and the sea swells could cause coastal flooding, so that storm surge is still likely to continue for the next few

this is a very wide wind field, so you're going to be seeinging some gale-force winds across a huge area, across much of the cities in the northeast. not just that, but cold air coming in out of canada. look at winnipeg with a high of zero. that's going to filter down into the ap la lags mountains the early part of next week. could be seeing some serious accumulations of snowfall into these regions. on the other side of the ocean, we are seeing a frontal area moving across portions of italy. that is going to push over toward the balkans, but the same storm system actually brought some severe weather towards portugal yesterday. i want to show you a video coming out of here in portugal where a twister caused some serious damage to several factories. powerful winds also hit a parking lot damaging numerous vehicles here. it's estimated that the winds in the storm reached about 200 kilometers per hour, so very serious and dangerous storm here and wrecked up a lot of cars. you can see as this continues to scroll off there towards the left, a car down there in the valley. so that's just showing

but still affecting the land, with gale-force winds. and very heavy rain that goes to this southeastern coast of india, as well. and looks like it may be in and around the region. the rainfall accumulation could be -- could be as much as 200 millimeters and some locations, especially in the eastern seaboard. you can see for the next 72 hours. coastal fldi inflooding from th flooding rain. storm surges and strong winds are going to be hammering the regions. we'll keep a close eye on this system. and, the rest of the eastern continental asia will be looking at this rain band. very closely, it has descended down from southern china, where it battered the coastal region. let me show you a video coming out from south china. after battering the philippines and vietnam, killing at least 30 people. remnants of the typhoon have brought rains to china. 250 millimeters have fallen. sunday into tuesday. and you see the flooding and drenching rain, causing serious flooding and making roads almost -- impassible. we can pull back. and we can show you
