this was an image taken by the galileo spacecraft as it came by the earth/moon system to get a gravityboost to go on its way to skrup ter. it turned around and took this family portrait of the earth and the moon together. for those of you with good eyes and maybe need to be in the front row, you may look at that image of the moon and say, but that -- i don't recognize that. it doesn't look like the moon i know. do you know why? it's because it's the far side of the moon. the orientation here is the moon -- is the earth and the moon and the sun is over to the right. so you're looking at the far side of the moon from this perspective. if you are on the earth you would be looking at the part of the moon that you recognize all the time. so not only is it the earth moon system but there is a lot in perspective as well. one of the things that i want to keep coming back to in the little time that i have here is to reemphasize this earth/moon system. on the earth as ellen alluded to a lot of us are geologists and the earth is a wonderful planet, it has plate tectonics, it has weather, it has s
