fox's trace gallagher has the latest. >> reporter: the oil slick is now five to seven miles away from louisiana's beaches and bayous but there are reports of oily clumps and tar balls washing up at cat island, mississippi just south of gulfport. a nasa satellite image shows the slick is getting smaller down from an estimated 400 square miles to an estimated 2,000. but experts say that is because the oil is pooling like clouds beneath the water. while repeated attempts to use remote controlled submarines to stop the flow of oil at the source have failed, bp now says the first of three containment domes, 65-ton concrete and metal structures designed to cap the well will be on the ocean floor by thursday. >> there are significant risks associated with these domes as they have not previously been used at these depths. if they are successfully deployed, however, bp expressed confidence that they would catch just about all of the oil. >> reporter: even if the flow is contained or stopped in the next several days, the economic and environmental impact is already enormous. and while the winds

trace gallagher is now live for us in venice, louisiana, with the details on this. all right.o this dome is plan a. how confident are they that it's going to work, trace? >> reporter: well, it's uncharted territory, megyn, it's never been tried before. this well is 5,000 feet down, so they're considering taking this dome or this box made of concrete and steal that weighs 76 tons and taking it with a hydraulic lift and lowering it 5,000 feet and trying to guide this thing with cameras. the idea is if you can cap that well, then you can trap the oil, and you can siphon the oil out. that's plan a. plan b's a problem because that means drilling a separate well entirely so you can divert the oil into a different well. but plan b would take between 60 and 90 days. that's a disaster. so what we have now is a plan a that needs to work. if it doesn't work, it's kind of back to the drawing board, megyn. bad news all the way around. megyn: all right, trace, and -- well, we'll get back to you in a bit. thank you. it was billed as a family-friendly immigration protest. michelle malkin has

deputy mike gallagher from lewis county was -- his car was strowk his way back from respond -- struck on his way back from responding to a domestic violence incident. timothy britton from seattle was shot while sitting in his car on halloween in seattle. we thought those two incidents were enough to rock our community. but then in one of the most heinous murders in the state of washington history, four lakewood police officers were shot and killed while on duty in parkland. sergeant mark renneger, officer ronald owens, officer teen that griswold, and officer greg richards. it was just a short time later that deputy kent mundell of pierce county sheriff's office died from wounds sustained in responding to a domestic violence call. so we have seen in washington state the sacrifice of these men and women, all that they do to keep us safe and all that their families go through when those who are in the line of duty pay the ultimate sacrifice. so, mr. president, i hope our colleagues will also remember the law enforcement across our country and in their individual states. i hope they will
