. >> gallagher, do you agree with this? are we avoiding here? is ben bernanke the hero of the hour? >> well, it's interesting. what's as interesting as what bernanke did say today was what he didn't say. or what the committee said. which is the fed was widely expected or hoped by a large portion of the market it would do another round of massive bond buying and intervention. its done twice already. that's with the salvation from above was hoping for. that didn't happen. on the other hand, the fed basically came out with as diane said a very clear statement. for the first time put a target date on how long it's going to keep interest rates toward zero. i think that led to a kind of collective sigh of relief. we know we can expect rates for the foreseeable future. the other thing is the fact the fed didn't do the massive intervention led people to think, okay. maybe it's not that bad. that's sort of a last -- you know, the last thing that they could have done. and bernanke said in the past wages have to be falling fast and prices have to be falling significant for the fed to do that.

i want to get back to trace gallagher for some per speckive. >> reporter: the u.s.g.s. saying this was a 5.9 magnitude. the depth of this thing was about a little more than a half mile. so it's a very shallow earthquake which makes it more dangerous and 5.i.9 is a strong earthquake. we talked about history earlier. the 3.6 earthquake they had in maryland earlier. that the strongest earthquake we could find in that area in recent years. when you talk about going from 3.6 to 5.9, that's a monumental lift. earthquakes don't just go up incrementally. the difference between a 5.9 and 6.0 is significant. it's probably about 1,000 times stronger. so you get a 5.0 to a 6.0 you are talking about 1,000 time the strength of that earthquake. that's why this is such a big deal. it was felt clearly up and down the eastern sea board. i would be surprised if after these crews go out the first responders, they don't find some fairly substantial damage somewhere around this earthquake. we are talking about maybe 9 or 10 miles away from the district of columbia from d.c. proper where it w

trace gallagher in our west coast newsroom. >> reporter: one of my favorite places on the planet. mother nature raw and rugged. so far this year there have been 17 deaths. that is double average of 8 deaths in yosemite. the latest is a 23-year-old man who fell off half dome. he fell down the face some 2,000 feet. the second death this summer. earlier in the summer a woman fell off half dome. now they limited the day pass hikes up there from 1,200 to 400 because the rangers say people are not physically able to make the climb. we told you about three people who crossed into restricted areas and fell 1,700 feet over their deaths at vernal falls. the park rangers say when you come to yosemite you need to play by the rules. >> we do not have a ranger in all the dangerous places 24/7. yosemite is a dangerous place and it's the responsibility of the visitor to take that into account. >> reporter: five of those were natural causes, heart attacks and old age. then six of them were from drowning including the ones from vernal falls. others were from falls. one of those is from a car accide

trace gallagher, live in our west coast newsroom with more.egyn, this base was -- jet was based out -- out of the miramar, station, home of the movie top gun, an f-18 hornet, a two seater, flying a training mission out over the pacific, it was routine, it was flying in tandem with the other jet when the other jet lost contact with the fa-18, the jet went missing around 10:30 last night, the coast guard, marines, navy, scrambled their rescue teams, as you might imagine. this was like finding a needle in a haystack. one hundred square miles, and it was pitch black. they searched for hours. finally, at 2:30 in the morning, the pilot and the weapons systems officer were both found in the water. they were 85 miles southwest of san diego, 35 miles off the coast of mexico. they were both apparently in good condition. they were flown to a san diego hospital. they are now listed as stable. again, this is one of the very few military incidents in recent months that has had a good outcome, megyn. the plane, by the way, is lost. but the pilots are okay. m
