[ applause ] >> thank you very much. i'm delighted to be here. the last time i was in lexington to give a talk at vmi, this building didn't exist and it wasn't that long ago. this is a very beautiful building. i looked at the program just yesterday again to remind myself what it was. i really knew what it was. but it's on leadership. so i wore my winfield scott tie. i didn't see a lex tour on winfield scott and since he's one of the five greatest soldiers in united states history, i thought i would wear this. dick summers who works up at carlisle gave it to me and i treasure it. that's the end of that. i'm going to talk about why i think military history is important. i realize i'm preaching the the choir here. i suspect most of you probably think military history is important or you wouldn't be here this afternoon unless you are just lost and too embarrassed to admit it. that's going to be our theme. i'll star on march 4, 1865 when abraham lincoln delivered his second inal august ral address to a crowd that gathered des

university of virginia history professor gary gallagher gave this year's closing remarks in which he spoke about the significance of studying military history. this is about 40 minutes. >> it's a very great pleasure for me to have the opportunity to introduce to you gary gallagher. i want to say to you that the topic of his talk there about the importance of studying military history goes back to the beginning of our foundation for this conference. about three years ago jim mcpherson was in lexington and i chatted with him about how we should develop this whole thing. he proposed the idea of studying or advancing the theme, overarching theme of the principles of effective command. we seized on that. he later declined to participate, but we have kind of kept that in our pocket, so to speak, as an overarching theme. gary gallagher, when we went to seduce him, so to speak, to come to this conference and give the wrap-up talk, he immediately seized on the topic of the importance of studying military history. and we have looked forward to this day for quite a long while, not only what's g

this room, or 50 of you have stood with me, in gettysburg, arguing with my long time hero, gary gallagher, who will be here, my role model for many decade. arguing about whether the confederates recognize that what seemed to be a golden opportunity there or not. did they make this up based on hindsight? because for a long while there were only postwar, if early postwar accounts. a why had no one said so then? those vivid postwar accounts must be part of the all pervasive lost cause bilch. well not at all surprisingly, contemporary evidence did surface from people who wrote at the time subsequently over the years. a north carolina lieutenant writing, that delay was fatal to us. we lost the golden opportunity. it is hardly possible to say how great our victory would have been. dare we miss the genius of jackson, the simplest soldier in the ranges felt it. there is plenty of room. i suppose, to argue the options on the slope above the house and their potential results. but not so much anymore to express the notion that those who were frustrated made it up after the fact. one of lee's battlef
