at whether you get six feet of storm surge or thirteen feet of storm surge is deadly well let me gallagher is in the coastal city of apalachicola lane northwest florida right in the path of hurricane michael so what impact andy is the hurricane having where you are. well the hurricane hit about two hours ago and at that point we were getting some pretty strong gusts of wind up to two hundred fifty kilometers an hour here in apalachicola not too much structural damage lots of downed trees lots of searing rain but it really is as governor rick scott was talking about that flooding that is now the issue we've got to meet a tidal surge here in apalachicola it hasn't come up onto the streets which is a good sign but the danger from that tidal surge is far from over hurricane michael is effectively pushing that water inland and even the rivers here may or may flood way inland that's the real danger about three hundred seventy five thousand people were put under mandatory evacuation order across about twenty counties many people ignored those evacuation orders that you started to hunker down we'r

cnn's dianne gallagher is in panama city beach with the latest.e, you cannot overstate how significant the damage is here in panama city. derek talking about the water there. here in panama city, you can see from the state of the firestone building here, it is about the wind. this is not an uncommon sight. the sun has not come up yet. i can tell you on our drive here, we are on 15th street, on our drive power lines were everywhere. trees snapped like toothpicks. there were entire brick walls and some full and brought down. bricks everywhere. tires still on the wall in here which is only partially up. again, this is not an unknown sight. just about every lot on the streets in panama city. you see structures like this. some are schools, churches, gas stations, businesses, people's homes. because the sun hasn't come up yet, we don't have a good grasp of how extensive the damage is except to tell you that it is bad. it's really bad. i can tell you we have seen bay county emergency officials and other agencies from the surrounding counties out here pat
