let's start with dianne gallagher in georgia. some schools have started to reopen, of course parts of the country reopenings have begun. what are they finding? what kind of setbacks are they running into? >> much like across the rest of the country and in georgia, we are seeing different ways that the school districts are trying to reopen. in nearby cherokee county, they started on monday, the first day of school. they're posting pictures from classrooms, from the school, on the first day of school. monday. you can see most of the kids are wearing masks. not a whole lot of social distancing in some of these photos, but look, a student who was there on the first day of school, a second grader, tested positive for covid-19 the district announced on wednesday. now, we don't know if that second grade classroom is in any of those photos that the school posted on the facebook page. but that entire second grade classroom, 20 students and the teacher, now have to quarantine for 14 days. the teacher will be teaching virtually from their h

our national correspondent dianne gallagher is in atlanta.s driving home concerns about the reopening of schools where you are in georgia. what is the latest on that? >> reporter: that's right, wolf. again, this is the youngest death known at this time for covid-19 in the state of georgia. that 7-year-old boy according to the coroner was in the shower and he had a seizure, they took him to the hospital where he later died. now the coroner points out that seizures are not uncommon in children when they have very high fevers and his cause of death is listed as covid-19. again, we know that children can get covid and we see that children can die from covid, and that is a concern among parents and teachers and kids themselves here in georgia, because they did go back to class and for some of them, it was in-person instruction this week. several school districts across the state have already reported positive cases and had to send home dozens of children to quarantine because they came in close contact, and then there was this photo that went vira

diane gallagher joins us now in atlanta. good morning, diane, what are we hearing from the governor on both of these fronts? >> reporter: yeah, poppy. so the governor, much like any other states is kind of allowing the school district to take the lead. and even in districts where the students are doing online learning to begin the school year, in some of those, like the largest school district, gwinnett county public schools, the teachers are still reporting to work to teach online from inside their classrooms. gwinnett county public schools reported 260 around employees have either tested positive for covid-19 or been exposed to it, so they can't work at this point. school starts next week in gwinnett county. as far as the georgia world congress center goes, it reopened, began accepting patients on monday. this is an overflow hospitals to kind of take the pressure off of the area hospitals when it comes to covid-19 patients. they're not going to take the sickest patients, but icu capacity is 85% in the state of georgia. a g

. >> cnn diane gallagher joins us from atlanta. tough for the teachers, tough for parents. uncertainty adds toughness to the dilemma. it's a big one. >> reporter: it is. it is kind of a bad choice on all sides here when you consider what teachers, parents, districts are weighing. these options. i can tell you that just north here in georgia, they started back in-person on monday in school, and you see in some of these pictures, most of the kids wearing masks. at this elementary school not required to wear a mask because there's no mask mandate in the state of georgia, but they're encouraging them to when they can't social distance. a lot of the kids don't seem to be socially distancing. a second grader, we don't know what that classroom, if it's in any of these pictures but second grade student tested positive at school on monday the first day. now all 20 of the second grade students in that class and the teacher have to go home and quarantine for 14 days. now, right now that teacher isn't showing any symptoms. that teacher will continue teaching virtually from home. but th

diane gallagher, thanks very much. dr. william schaffner joins us now from vanderbilt university. doctor, thanks so much for joining us. at least 20 states seeing a downward trend in new cases here. what is working in those states? >> well, jim, what we think is working is wearing masks, social distancing and avoiding large gatherings. you know the population seems to have divided itself into two groups. there's the safe group, the very careful group that are adhering to that, and then there's the other group that are more carefree rather than careful, and we're still concerned that there are too many carefree people out there. as admiral giroir said, we have to maintain this for a long period of time. it's not a sprint. it's a marathon, and the virus is not just going to disappear, so we have to maintain these mitigation efforts if we want to keep controlling this virus. >> doctor, what do you make of the guidance -- we just had the president of the american academy of pediatrics on last hour and their guidance is pushing really hard for schools to reopen but she acknowledged the

dianne gallagher has more. i imagine the school districts expected this and they have some plan for how to handle it. i mean, is that plan kicking into action, is it working? >> well, i think it might be too early to determine whether or not it's working, jim. they still haven't finished the first week of school in cherokee county and we're looking at more than 60 students that have been sent home for quarantine purposes because they have been exposed to a positive case. all of those on the first day of school, on monday. we are talking four different cases of covid-19. at four different schools, in one school district. so this is likely what we're going to continue to see happen at these districts that have chosen to allow parents to send their kids back to in-person classes. again, we're just at this first week of school. and here in the state of georgia, we remain at over a 10% positivity rate. it became the fifth state to surpass 200,000 confirmed cases of covid-19. yesterday and likely we'll close in on 4,
