david gallo, let me start with you. i want to go back to something you said in our last block about the people you have been talking to who had a lot of experience looking at satellite images. they're twbeginning to raise serious questions about what actually is in those images. can you say more about that? how doubtful are you or they that this is actually something significant? >> well, when i look at those images i see something. i just don't know what it is. and it looks like it could be part of the aircraft. it might be maybe a wing. and therefore has a low profile so would be difficult to pick up with radar. they're looking at the same things we're looking at as far as i know. so they don't have access to the actual raw data. but it's interesting. it must have been four or five but they've all expressed doubt more than they've expressed any sort of strong positive feeling that those are pieces of an aircraft. i was surprised by that because we're going to know fairly soon whether -- if we find those pieces whether

and david gallo co-leader of the search for air france flight 447. he's director of special projects at the ocean graphic institution. david, what do you make of the debris that we have seen so far, david souci, i mean the size of it. ones vees obviously the images getting are not very precise. >> if the satellite's going to be over the top it will be clear rather than oblique angle. when they talk about repositioning the satellites that gives you a better picture of it. as far as the debris goes, i ha hesitations about it. i can't get it out of my mind, the dimension, 80 feet is the size of a shipping container. they come in 20, 40 and 80-foot lengths. i can't get it out of my mind that shadow of doubt. >> this is also the part of world where ships wreck, where containers fall over because of bad weather. it would not be totally uncommon to have a shipping container in the water. >> not only that but that channel where those two convergences come together is a gathering area for that kind of debris as well. i have my hesitations about it as well. >>

so as david gallo knows, had just expressed, once you get some good firepower, as he put it, a lot of ships out there, a lot of space, that'll aid in that effort. but yeah, that's a very critical point to make, 1,400 feet -- or 1,400 miles from anywhere where they could start assembling the aircraft. >> and we were told from john young, from australia's maritime safety authority, visibility is not good. assuming, though, that the u.s. reconnaissance aircraft, the poseidon, the other -- the australian aircraft that had been sent there, these more commercial satellites that are now being reorie-oriented in or to pass over to make multiple pass, do you have a sense, david soucie, of how quickly if they're able to find debris, how quickly they would be able to identify it? >> you know, that's going to be the difficult part. because once it's -- especially if it's not one big solid piece as we were talking about having one big solid piece is kind of unlikely, but if it's a whole bunch of little pieces strung together i think it would be more difficult to try to identify it as specifically

i want to bring in david gallo. something like the remus 6,000, you would have to have a basic idea where the plane went down before you could use it, correct? >> well, we had a big -- at the time we thought the search area was huge, anderson. it was 40 miles in diameter, and that vehicle, we had three of those on one ship, which was unprecedented. each vehicle can cover about 50 square miles a day, the way we like to do it, which is slow and detailed. that vehicle, there was no government program to make that vehicle. it was mike and his colleagues sitting around a small engineering bench that came up with the idea. now it's turned into this incredible power house of a vehicle. >> can you just send -- i don't know, three or four of those out for day after day after day to keep mapping the entire area? >> sure. >> around 1500 miles off southwest australia? >> yeah, yeah. that's the idea. in the olden days, and still today in some cases, you tow a single vehicle behind a ship. it's like mowing the lawn with the mower

david gallo before the break asked the question how do we know that?are people coming to that belief. my understanding, i don't know if you have heard or you know from your sources, is that because the pings stopped at a certain point they're making i think the assumption they'd be able to tell whether it was on the ground or not. is that your understanding? >> well, that's right. we have to be very precise. the pings stopped and the aircraft was still intact. there are two possibilities only. either it crashed into the water of a deliberate act, because something happened on the plane, or it landed somewhere. i would say most of the investigators and folks who have been watching this would say the less likely option is that it landed somewhere. but it is an option. and you should also remember that at the time of the last transmission of a signal to a satellite, the plane probably had about an hour's worth of fuel left. so it's not as though it was constrained if it wanted to fly and had the ability to fly further on it could still travel many hundred

david gallo joins us. they say they cannot locate the debris. mr. gallo is legendary. he is at the woods hole institute with m.i.t. he led the search for air france. gallo, what is the single thing you would like to tell people that they're not getting in the media frenzy? >> at the core of this, everything that is found is a piece of evidence. the tough part and now has been sorting out what is real evidence and what has been self generated. i think now we have gotten something that would honestly be a piece of evidence that will last more than one day before it is discarded. >> is an ocean just another ocean? aboutre something unique the southern indian ocean on the way to antarctica? >> they can be some of the roughest waters on earth. this -- terrain funny beaneath this. goes down to about three miles. it is like a long volcanic terrain. we know that kind of terrain. we're not the only ones. there are other laboratories that do too. that is encouraging. if the plane is there, we know how to search for it. >> it did not appear that we had --it did appear that we had
