this morning in gallup he's turned the corner. this morning in gallup it is 44 obama, 47 romney. and look, last week i loved it. "usa today." this is one of the big advantages the obama campaign will have. a compliant media. there was the front-page article of "usa today." "obama leads in battleground states 47-45." i read the whole goddang article. no context provided. in those 12 states what happened in 2008? obama carried 12 states out of 12. and he carried them by more than 54%. and mccain got just over 45%. so here we are, 2012, and obama is seven points below where he was and romney is at where mccain was. who do you think is going to come out with a better shot at winning? all romney needs to do is win five of those 12 states and he wins the election. and you know -- >> no, it's true. and the other thing is -- the other side's true, is that obama needs to win the kerry states and nevada, colorado, and new mexico. and romney can't get there. and this is where the demographics start to cut in because the kerry states, obama's going to win the kerry states. nevada, new mexico

this is according to the latest gallup poll.nd last night we were talking about the cbs/new york times poll which showed romney up by three points, which was within the margin of error, but still surprised people on the panel. and it is right now nine points in the president's favor according to gallup. but does that mean he's the first female president? this is what an op-ed in the post said. it says monday's activities veered into pandering as obama brazenly flauntsed his feminine mystique. something about it is just, i don't know, he's found a mystique? obama also appeared on "the view" today where he talked about getting teased by the first lady and coaching his daughter's basketball team. >> we're celebrating 40 years title ix. and it shows when girls are given the opportunity and they're competing and working as a team, it makes them stronger, makes them more confident. it's one of the great things that's happened during the course of my lifetime is women's sports becoming just as important, just as powerful. >> cnn's chie

we've had one piece of data on this so far, gallup came out with a poll, six in 10 people say this will not affect their decision at all. to the extent that there's any problem for the president -- >> what about evangelicals? >> evangelicals are very much against the president and the fact he's in the white house is a great turnout operation for the republicans. but whether -- a tiny little erosion, very tiny is among independents. 23% in this gallup poll said they would be less likely to vote for the president because of the decision. 11% said more likely. but that's a very small amount. and we are at the red hot moment here of this. the question is whether this continues on. if it's going to continue to be an issue, mitt romney is going to have to push it and there's no indication that he is going to push it at all. gwen: mitt romney not only doesn't want to push it but he also has gone even farther to the right, i guess, on civil unions. than his predecessors. george w. bush -- >> did not endorse a federal constitutional amendment on this and mitt romney has. gwen: and this is exactl

and i wonder, john, what do you make of the gallup poll? >> reporter: people, scott, at that fund-raiser described it as buoyant and uplifting in conversations today, but in the rest of the country, it's not necessarily as monumental an issue as it was for that audience. in that poll, people largely registered their opinion along party lines, but among independents, 23% said the president's decision would make them less likely to vote for president obama. 11% said they would be more likely. so, obama's same-sex marriage position could cost him some independent and a very small amount of democratic votes. but these are small numbers. >> pelley: john, the republicans have had a muted response, so to speak, a measured response to the president's announcement this week. rewonder why that is. >> reporter: well, in talking to eypublican strategists, they give three reasons for why this won't be an issue they'll strain to take advantage of. the first is they feel like their base is already fired up by their dislike of the g esident. d onnd, there'

we saw the gallup poll, our flash survey. let's talk about the issue in california and, really, the change we've seen in the last couple of years in terms of how gay marriage is perceived here. >> that flash survey showed it would really matter how they voted and it would matter in a positive way because we've seen a substantial swing in favor of gay marriage in california over the past decade or so. the public policy institute of california asked this question just last april, compare its findings, just take a look and see what's happened now with what happened in 2000. it is nothing short of dramatic. we're talking about a 13-point swing here, all in just 12 years. you're moving public opinion very quickly on this social i issue in california. it says an awful lot. and that's another reason why, by the way, jessica, that california has become such a blue state. >> okay. so let's set california aside because we do things a little differently here. what about in the middle of the country and on a national stage? >> look, ther
