and when did you first get introduced to gandhi, thoreau and merton? >> guest: well, i first heard of gandhi through the words of and preaching of martin luther king jr., from a distance. but then a f--oh, about two or three years after dr. king emerged on the scene, i met a young man by the name of jim lawson, the young methodist minister, born in ohio; had traveled to india, studied gandhi. this man, this--this young scholar, minister, was--who really believed in--in non-violence--the philosophy of non-violence, not simply as a technique or as a tactic but as a way of life, as a way of living--really embedded me with non-violence and with the teaching of gandhi; probably did more than any human being to inspire me to try to find a way to live the way that gandhi would have people to live, i--and serve. i started reading merton when i was in school in nashville as a seminary student, and it w--he was very inspiring--very, very inspiring, reading his work, what he--what he--what he had to say about life, about self, about in a sense forgetting about yo

about the importance, he often talked about i was inspired by christ, and i got my technique from gandhi. so when you look at the way the civil rights movement happened, there was a methodology, it wasn't just ministers feeling the spirit and saying oh, we're going to march today. you know, that was part of it, but they thought about very methodically and strategically, where do we get the most mileage whether we do a sit-in today or a boy cofment and they really thought about also, how do we do this in a way that we allow our opponent to save face so that after all of the tension clears up, we can come back together and join hands. so that's the problem today as i see it is many activists, not all, but many of them who don't really study my father's teachingings go straight to direct action, which is to confront rather than doing information-gathering, which is the first step of nonviolent reconciliation. we really just to go back to basics. it's all there. so a lot of our problems could probably be solved if we sought to find more of our things we have in common rather than the differe

nonviolent and nonlethal in your civil resistance and civil disobedience through all of history inspired gandhiinspired dr. martin luther king, inspired people all over the world who have fought and use the same tactics. but sometimes you must put yourself into that lions den, or into that tough situation. and put yourself out there on behalf of everybody else. and when you teach those lessons, when you teach all of the lessons of jesus in its totality you will realize that even with all the discrimination and all of the religious stigma, jesus wasn't treated very well at the end of the day. but i believe that the legacy that he leaves not only for christians, but for people all over the world, no matter what their religious tradition, is priceless. and it did come with sacrifice. so we would talk about bearing the cross, gay people library that cross today more than anyone. especially because of the church trying to disown them.
