the role i play in the garden project is planting seeds and watering everything in our garden to keep plants healthy. i spent an hour and a half an hour community garden every week. the good thing our garden has done, it has grown healthy food and we have eaten the reagan region we have eaten. environmental education is important because natural food is really good for the body instead of candy. it helps care for the environment because people can walk through our garden instead of using gas to go to the grocery store and spend money. and this creates still more garden waste.cessing this organic waste into compost is better for the climate than letting it slowly rot in dumps, which creates greenhouse gasses. >> we are at a point now where the city is saving about a hundred thousands cubic metes+ of landfill space every month and that equates to in a year over 100 000 tons of carbon emissions that are being saved. >> trucks carrying the garden waste are on their way to the compost facility, a good half- hour's drive outside of capetown. climate-friendly composting is awarded carbon certificates for emissions trading, so the trucks first have to be weighed. to qualify for emissions trading, the composting company has to prove the exact tonnage involved. it takes about eight weeks and a fair bit of technology to turn green waste into compost. a machine sorts out pieces bigger than five centimeters. these big chunks aren't composted. water is regularly added in order to maintain the right temperature and moisture balance. samples are regularly sent to the lab

commissioner norton: thank you, in support of the center of sustainable gardening. as the school district has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with the botanical society working together to teach students about conservation and where over 10,000 school children 90% are from san francisco have a unique opportunity to visit the botanical garden free of charge to participate in educational programming and where as the educational activities of the san francisco botanical garden society provides at no cost to the school district include botanical, horticulture that includes science and teaches students about water conservation and appreciation for environment and where as the botanical garden society was built in the 1906's and impairs the garden's ability to san francisco's public school students and where as the garden societies plans new plans for a new nursery to enhance the society's ability to support the educational activities offered at the garden and enable students of all ages and backgrounds to learn about horticulture and measures they can take in their

there are several community gardens existing in that community. we are in conversation with the different organizations there to get a sense of does it make sense to have a traditional community garden on that side, or is there something we could doing on the continuum of supporting urban agriculture on that site? there is a place where people get compost or pick up different tools. we continue to have conversations with the stakeholders and the idea is we will be conducting open houses for that site in the next few months to facilitate feedback that would be incorporated into the request for proposals that would be released. wrapping up, the next steps as we move forward will continue to solicit feedback regarding the pilot program and determining the best use for those sites. we will require that any operational partners use the most susceptible gardening practices and the work with the community throughout the process as they get the site ready and when they move into implementation. based on the early information we're receiving around the soi

get the leaves out of your garden.u have weeds that have started to come up, but they haven't quite set their seed, we want to get some preen down in  there, a weed presentative. you put it down and it keeps the seeds from germinating in your garden. if seeds have already started to sprout, then it's not going to stop those from coming up. but it will stop seeds from germinating in the garden. >> with this kind of weather with everything blooming around, daffodils up, can we start planting things now? >> yes. and with the rain that's going to be coming in this weekend, if you can get some things in the ground now, you won't have to worry about watering to start with. we have a couple of different things to look at the if you didn't have the opportunity to get tulips into your garden in the fall, stop in your local garden center at johnson's. we have the tulip bulbs that are started and you can take and plant these. this is is a snapdragon, a great flower, great in cool weather, up to the hot weather of summer. give yo
