at the garden. -- t garden -- tea garden. i want to welcome you here as well. and congratulate all of us for working so closely together and certainly our relationships are valuable. this is one of those reasons why not too many other consular general offices -- it is country to country and people to people. the council general and staff has offered yet another the supporting symbol of the relationship, the planting of cherry blossom trees throughout our city. we had awe have been celebratine cherry blossom festival. they are very peaceful, a relationship that we keep in mind always and we have done so for over 100 years. since the cherry blossoms are arrived as a gift to washington d.c. while we have gone for many years of that relationship, it is a requirement to know the san francisco enjoys 55 years of that relationship, many members of the district-city community here today to enjoy that. a member of the chamber of commerce is here to enjoy that as well. we have this relationship with you because we know san francisco's international status does not stop s

because japanese gardens are a huge aspect on the culture i started reading on gardens.the natural and the idea on how they use the gardens and how much it reads to them i started reading. i read a line like the silk worker line where it embraced me and i thought, that's what i would write about. you never walk from the front gate to the front door in a straight line it's always a curving path in which you discover things along the way. i said, that's it. he lands, he gets off the train and slowly he would walk down this path and discover the story of this caretaker along the way. it began to move. but, you know, when i speak of it it seems like it's simple. it was not simple. this month of thinking about things. this is times of writing things down and thinking it doesn't work. and i'm incredibly fortunate i have a writer's group i have written with and shown my work to for the last. we are trying to figure it out on the way over. i brought some of the audience with me. this is what you do when you are a writer. you never know who will come who read a book in 1985 so yo

we're looking at the 1890 madison square garden. this was located at the northeast corner of madison square. that is 26th street. this is madison avenue. the building stretched from fourth avenue. we call it park avenue south. it was designed by mckinley and white and it technically is the second madison square garden. this was the site in the 1850s for grand central depot, 1870s, no, this was after the 1850s, grand central depot before they moved to 42nd street. when grand central did move up to 42nd street they left behind the huge train shed. that train shed was used first by pt barn you mean for his hippo drome theater and can the equestrian society of new york took it over for their upscale horse show. the horses may have been upscale and the equestrians may have been upscale but a rusty old train shed is not upscale. they decided in the late 1880s to demolish that and hired mccumbee and white to do this multi-entertainment complex and the madison avenue end of it had several theaters including a 1,500 seat music hall the size
