it was to find the garden. it was explicitly to find the garden. we have worked on the site as early as 1964, so we knew the site was here. we knew about custos, but this site was a pasture and after augustus's death, the house was rented out and it was owned by george and martha is rented out and eventually by the 18 teens and 1830s, it had fallen into disrepair and was demolished and and gone. and this property was turned into a park for eastern state hospital just nearby. and it just remained a pastor and a park that whole time. so colonial williamsburg in 1964 decided to try and find mainly the house itself, where custer's lived and anything else that they could understand about the property. so they began an excavation and in 1964, found the house, found the well, found the kitchen, but they didn't find the garden because they weren't really looking for it yet. they decided at the time that they didn't have the technology, the techniques really needed to understand a large garden through archeology. and so they just stopped. thankfully, they s
