a winter storm warning for garrett county, maryland. up to an inch of snowfall is anticipated there. d.c. at 34 degrees. 32 at frederick. 30 at hagerstown. cumberland at 30. we've got dulles at 32. to the south, fredericksburg at 35 degrees. we'll see this all change into rain a little bit later o the temperature playing a big part. it is currently 34 at d.c. the surface temperatures are expected to be at freezing and below. so we've got this low pressure system moving in associated warm front with it and that is bringing in all of this active weather we're dealing with. we'll be a far cry as we move through into the next couple of days where we'll see drier conditions and a big boost in our temperatures as we get a strong southerly flow kicking in. in the meantime, still some colder air lingering through into the course of tonight. later on today, when it does change for rain, we'll see the chance of fog. future raft, still some mix, a lot of rainfall to the south. same story for the 9:00 hour and then we get a little bit of a break st

major garrett is following developments at the white house. major, what do you hear from there tonight? >> reporter: anthony, the president spent the afternoon in the oval office, january 1, new year's day, presiding over a country and economy that has technically gone over the fiscal cliff. at this hour, anthony, white house officials tell us the president is somewhat optimistic that republicans, despite their misgivings and reservations will find a way to either have an amendment process or come narrowly close to one but ultimately allow this senate compromise to come up for an up-or-down vote and the president, in confering with nancy pelosi, believed there are sufficient house democratic votes with a few republican votes to get this deal done. the vice president, joe biden, spent a lot of time with house democrats today. that was a very persuasive presentation, house democratic officials tell me. there are lots of votes on the democratic side. the question is can republicans provide enough on their side to get this deal done. the white hou
