let's bring in msnbc's garrett haake. garrett, just picking up our verage with you, again we are looking at the scene there from the floor. take us through again for folks just tuning in exactly what this piece of legislation represented and exactly the scale of defeat we just saw there for it on the house floor. >> yeah, steve. this piece of legislation represented probably the last chance to get any kind of big immigration bill through either chamber of commerce -- or xham b chamber of congress -- been talking for a long time -- to get a bill that's a compromise between factions of the republican party, democrats did not really participate in this effort. they did not like the changes that republicans wanted to make to legal immigration. they did not like that this compromise bill included really the most money we've seen yet set aside for the wall. $25 million up front. what doomed this bill ultimately was it did include a pathway to citizenship for d.r.e.a.m.ers. what we saw in the final tally was republicans abandoni

garrett, what more can you tell us about that? >> reporter: well, craig, remember it was just last night that the president or maybe this morning where the president sort of blessed secretary nielsen in a tweet saying she'd been doing a good job the had her visit here is to talk about these two immigration bills, the compromise immigration bilk pushed by house leadership that we're expect fog see say vote on on thursday. it's another factor of the white house now making a full-court press to fry to get one these two bills. again, it appears they do prefer this compromise bill across the finish line in the house of representatives. you've got snome folks going to the white house to talk to the president. you have jeff sessions on the hill, secretary nielsen on the hill making the hard sell to conservatives who may be on the fence who may be worried that they won't have cover from the white house to vote for these bills there's such fear in the republican lawmakers circle, if you will, that anything they vote for in immigration will

let's go out to capitol hill where garrett haake is standing by for us. garrett, to chris's point moments ago, mitch mcconnell said never mind this election in november as far as i can tell there isn't a presentation this year. if his world if there is not a presidential election he is not interested in hoeding up a nomination for a supreme court justice. >> no, mcconnell would love to get this done quickly. supreme court nominations is an issue republican voters care a great deal about. democratic voters haven't been as dialed in on that issue. i talked to several democratic elected officials and staff members about this this week it's just not something that the democratic base has cared as much about traditionally but over the last week, having seen three major supreme court rulings against them i think you might be starting to see that change. i think you will see two fights in the senate this summer and fall assuming that the president is able to make that appointment judiciously and do so in a quick way. you will see first a fight amongst democrats

jon: garrett tenney, thank you.ring in the white house correspondent for the daily are caller. so the tit for tat trade war, if you will, between china and the trump administration seems to be growing more serious by the day. what is china specifically aiming at here? >> sure, jon. so china is very upset about these intellectual property tariffs, and they're trying to hit the president exactly where it hurts. they are targeting u.s. agricultural sector and specifically they're going after the president's base throughout the midwest. they're going after soybean, they're going after sorghum and other such crops. and the reason for that is they are explicitly trying to target the states which flipped from democrat to republican to elect donald trump president of the united states. but the trump administration has made very clear that, you know, the president and secretary perdue of agriculture has said they are totally willing in order to provide some sort of support to those farmers as prices do skyrocket to a record

let me turn to garrett up on capitol hill. provsbly the president in the order essentially taunts congress to get something done on this. frankly, the court case that orders children sort of -- that the president claimed was tying his claims in the first place is something congress has to address. are they ready to address it? is it going to be stand alone? are they still going to try to insert it into a bigger immigration bill? >> chuck they are going to try to address it. there is pobs pro probably one and a half plans from the original half a dozen or so we were talking about last night floating around on the senate side. the one with the most momentum right now is led by thom tillis which has more than a dozen republican senators signed on to it including the majority leader. it looks like what ted cruz proposed earlier in the week. mandates that judges speed up the process and that families basketball kept togethe in family shelters not things like the converted walmart. that's one piece of legislation that looks like it'

garrett? >> after spending the day out there covering these protests in d.c., it is worth noting that a lot of the groups that are behind today's marches are the same ones that have been involved in organizing other protests against president trump and his policies. what was interesting though with this issue of immigration, and the separation of children from their parents, is one that also fired up some folks who haven't taken part in previous protests. we saw a lot of parents who came out with their children today to join thousands of other protesters here in d.c., and a lot of the protesters were very familiar with the ins and outs of immigration, with what they want to see changed, such as reunifying children and parents, demanding an end to the detention of families who are caught crossing the border illegally and abolishing i.c.e., but for a lot of other folks today's protest was just as much about the president's rhetoric on immigration as it was about his policies. >> we owe at least

garrett, what do you expect out of the hearing? >> well, katy, these preliminary hearings are generally a pretty quick affair. we may get a plea, we may find out something about conditions of release and we may potentially find out what more the government has up its sleeve other than what was released in the indictment released last night. what's gotten a lot of play on this, including from the president, is that somehow this was a leak of classified information. but the reality in the indictment, the language here is that wolfe is charged with lying to the fbi about his contact with reporters, not actually with leaking classified information. so we have yet to see if that loop can be closed there and if indeed there is classified information that showed up in these reports so that the government is aware of wolfe leaking. we could potentially find out some of that today, but likely not. >> julia, how does this tie in to the news that a "new york times" reporter's phone calls and her -- not personal information, but her reporting

we are going to bring in major garrett now at the white house. why the executive order, why not a directive to the attorney general? >> reporter: the white house asserts it must follow the law and even executive order to provide executive instruction alongside what it says is a law that it is duty-bound to enforce. this administration, starting in april of this year, under the so-called zero-tolerance policy universally applied to that wall. if you're caught at the border, you will be prosecuted. and under a consent decree, there was a result of years and years of litigation, the american government essentially agreed to se if they were being prosecuted for crossing the border illegally. because it was agreed children should not be subjected to any of the dangers of being incarcerated with adults. the administration knew that would be the inevitable result of the zero-tolerance policy. separating children. and had to know that. this is a long-standing application or part of immigration policy. the administration went ahead anyway. and forced the

msnbc's garrett haake has been chasing down lawmakers today. what can you tell us?well, craig, the speaker and his team have bought themselves some time as it concerns that rogue group of republican lawmakers. they've been trying to force the issue with something called a discharge petition, essentially forcing a series of votes on the floor on immigration. today it appears that the speaker who has promised to listen to their concerns and take in the concerns of the entire republican conference has bought a little bit of time saying they're trying to work on a compromise bill. they spent about two hours in a meeting of all these republican house members going over the areas where they agree on immigration as an issue and the areas where they disagree. it's increasingly clear that the big stumbling block is still a question of citizenship for dak ra recipients, whether and how to allow it. so while they're close, there is this big stumbling block. conservative house freedom member described this to me as he was leaving. >> obviously, there is no bill. there's certain
