garrett, first to you. what is the former president doing today? how has this attempt impacted him from your reporting? >> reporter: he's expected tonight to make an announcement about a new crypto enterprise he's working on that has nothing to do with his campaign. what i can tell you now based on his social media posts and an interview with another network, the former president is angry. he posted on truth social a little while ago, fight, fight, fight, which became his mantra after the first assassination attempt in butler, pennsylvania, and in a lengthy interview he told fox news he blames president biden and vice president harris' rhetoric on the campaign trail about him for this attack. he assumes the suspect's motivation here saying this person was clearly motivated by the language that is used against him, describing him as a threat to democracy and so forth and that's why he was targeted here. it's a shade upgraded from what he was saying at the debate, the idea he believes political rhetoric has made him a target. he concludes that interv

garrett, let me start with you. good morning, welcome to florida. what more have we learned about what happened here yesterday? >> well, we understand that the president was keeping up with his usual activity of golfing on the weekends, he was five or six holes into the course and secret service agents who regularly kind of operate a few holes ahead of him, one of these officers saw a rifle barrel poking through what is a chain-link fence that surrounds many of these holes, thinking that this person was perhaps aiming that officer we are told fired on that suspect who then fled. fortunately a witness saw the person flee, saw their car, got the license plate number and the suspect was apprehended in a neighboring county a few minutes later arrested without incident. what was found left behind included a rifle with a scope, a gopro camera and two backpacks which appeared to have been hanging up on the fence, perhaps as some kind of screen for the suspect. we are expect to go hear more from law enforcement this afternoon. we are hearing this very much

garrett, a lot to talk about today.mer president's false claims about migrants are becoming an issue for his campaign. and also today his running mate jd vance said that haitian migrants are spreading diseases in his home state ohio. can you just fact check and tell us what the response is to those claims? >> reporter: on the latter claim, there's no evidence of what jd vance is describing. this is sort of a recurring pattern for donald trump, who has tried to make the issue of what he calls migrant crime central to his campaign and links his two favorite issues, immigration and the border and crime. the challenge for him is the numbers do not currently tell the story he wants them to tell. border crossings are down, violent crime is down. trump has combined the issues. that's what led him to this town of ohio where he was spreading lies about immigrants. he talked much more general terms about the same population before an audience of only reporters. >> in springfield, ohio, 20,000 illegal haitian migrants descended up
